Classification: Query
You start with yourself and work backward, documenting the births, marriages, and deaths for each generation. Obtain your own birth cert., then your parents marriage cert. and birth certs., then your grandparents' certs., and so on. You can't make a big leap from yourself to your 2x great grandmother without doing the work in between or you're very likely to wind up researching the wrong family.
You will probably find GENUKI (http://www.genuki.org.uk/) very helpful. Read through Getting started in genealogy and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs, then review the pages for the counties in which your ancestors lived.
When you get stumped, post your query on the relevant surname or location board and someo kind soul will help you.
Good luck!
