How to number original documents, photos, books, etc.

Hi,

I'm hoping this is the right thread to put this in. I'm working on preserving lots of different original documents from my family history and want to use a good approach to numbering and organizing as I go. I'm going with the binder approach using acid free paper & plastic protectors for all documents. I've been searching around for what order I should be sorting things and it seems like every system has problems.

Organizing by individual id# or surname causes problems for documents like marriage certificates that pertain to more than one person or surname and organizing by event is good, but what about documents that pertain to more than one event (like something that shows birth and death info for one individual) or items that don't pertain to any event, like a family bible or a photo of a family not related to any particular event, or the event is unknown. I also have documents that I may know the event (like a military discharge), but is it worth creating an entire event category for a very rare event in my family history? If I don't where do I file it?

I'm just really struggling with how to do this in any meaningful manner.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Courtenay

Who's on first? Which generation gets top billing again?!

I keep seeing, and receiving reverse order ancestral lines. That is to say, the individual who is the final descendant is putting himself as a member the first generation and working in reverse rather than let's say the individual who arrived to North America in the 1600's. Are others seeing this trend?

Ahnentafel numbering problem

(I've posted this under "help" too as I'm not sure which thread to use - sorry)
So..

I like, and am starting to use the Ahnentafel Genealogical Numbering System quite effectively now that my research is beginning to expand past my own limited memory banks however I’ve come to a bit of a problem with aunts and uncles.

Take a section of my family to see my problem - An Ahnentafel pattern is:

No.
1. Myself
2. John C. (my father)
3. Avril (my mother)
4. Harold (my father’s father)
5. Edna (my father’s mother)
6. Stanley (my mother’s father)
7. Violet (my mother’s mother)
8. John (my grandfather’s father)

Now, No. 8 - John - has 7 sons whom I have labelled/numbered 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7 respectively and chronologically, oldest first. Fine so far but…

…8.7 is Harold – my number 4 on the Ahentafel. Do I number him 4 or 8.7 ?

Likewise with No. 2 - John C. - He’s Harold’s first son (of 4 kids) so should I number him 8.7.1 or 4.1?

At the moment I’ve given each two numbers. I seem to think I’m messing up two systems here. Can some one help me out?
Marking 2nd and 3rd Generation Names

I have noticed several 2nd and 3rd generation
descendants marked as II and III i.e.: Tom R. Smith
(II) or Tom R. Smith (III). I don't like the Roman
numerals but don't know how else to mark them. How do
you recommend marking them? Should I enter (2) or (3)
into the Suffix or OtherName field? Often a father and
son will share the same exact name but neither will be
referred to as Jr. or Sr. I need to mark the names in
some way that makes it easy to distinguish the two
individuals. What do you recommend?
billje
What numbering system should I use for all my paperwork, documentation, etc? I use Fam. I am back in genealogy after 30 yrs. out of it (back before computers!).

Cindy

I would like to know how to know what cousin someone is to another i.e. "1st once removed" etc. Specificaly, how do you determine this. If two people have the same set of great-grandparents(one set only the same)what is their relation to each other. I think it's 2nd cousins. Am I right?
