From the lack of contrast in the photo, I believe your image is a ferrotype, also known as a tintype, and not a daguerreotype. In the 1850's and 60's, ferrotypes were the most popular and affordable photographs available. From the clothing I would say the photo dates from the 1850's to the early 1860's. The high collars, while still in use in the 1860's, were not as commonly used in the 1860's as they were in the 1850's.
