I agree unless the image is of extream value to you or someone else then I would back it up with a compressed tiff. Tiffs can be edited. jpgs lose a great deal of resolution after you edit and save them. They are actually compressed bmps. At the right compression you really can't tell the difference in the look even though you might have a 50:1 compression. Dealing with huge files is actuall painful. I have never gotten a complaint that the picture is missing detail. You will get complaints if the file is too big.
You really also need to pay attention to the scan and how you are saving them. You need to experiment. Make sure you can't tell the difference between that and a bigger.
