The photo is pretty 'modern' for 1860. That photo uses the same process we still use today. The process is fairly well perfected in your photo. In 1860 that technology was 'Rocket Science' still being worked on by chemists. Even in 1865 you would not see that level of refinement for this process. Just look at outside pictures taken during the Civil War. Out side picture had to be taken with the same process. Note the details of those photos then yours. You will see just how crude those picture look when compaired to that one.
