In short, yes! Scan and distribute them. Negitives obviously require a bit more resolution than the pictures. Keep the originals in a cool dark dry place. The scans are the best way to preserve them since something bad will happen sooner or later. Most photo editors will allow you to reverse the negitave to a positive. That is way better than trying to make pictures from them. You probably want to scan them in a tiff or bit map until after you edit them. At that point I would convert them to a jpeg to save spave and they are much easier to use.
