My grandmother (age 92) told me that her grandmother lived in AL -Marshall County and her husband died and was buried near Diamond, Marshall Cty, AL She then moved to Texas with her boys and is buried there. Sarah Jane Woods Coker and her husband were originally from South Carolina. My grandmother said that she has a marker at her grave in Texas but she cannot give me any idea where. She said family members have gone there and came back to Alabama and told her that they visited her grave. I need any information on where to start looking.

Getting to Texas

Several of my family lines migrated from Georgia and Alabama to East and Central Texas. How did they get there?

I spent much of this evening browsing the links on Cindi's List in her Migrations section. There doesn't seem to have been any particular "trail" going across the southern states... not like the more famous ones that go across the central part of the US to California.

I'm aware of one ancestor (Sheffield) that brought a wagon train across from Georgia to East Texas but have no information about their route or experiences. Seems like it would have been a most difficult trip considering the amount of forest land in the south.

Can anyone here offer guidance on where to look for more education on this topic?

Maine to Louisville

My greatgrandmother Annie M. Higgins and her sister Jane were born in Ellsworth, Me and travelled to Louisville between 1850 and 1860. I would imagine it would be closer to 1860 since they were born abt 1842 and 1845.

They are the only Higgins listed in the 1860 Census born in Maine.

How would they have travelled? Train, coach ?

Jane married in 1863 in Louisville to John O'Day. Her first child George was born in Maine in 1864. Later children were born in Louisville,

Annie married in 1866 in Brooklyn, NY. No clue as to how she got to Brooklyn!

Thanks,
Ellen

Seeking Information on Sanford Reagan "Sandy" Thompson

I am looking for the parents of and any other information about my grandfather, Sanford Reagan Thompson, who is listed in the 1920 U.S. Census as Sandy R. Thompson. In the 1920 census, he is at Camp Bragg, North Carolina. He lists himself as 46 years old, a building contractor, single and head of household. He lists both of his parents as being born in Scotland.

He was born in Alabama in 1874, if the age on the 1920 census is correct. Sandy was in the 19th mechanized field artillery, 5th Division in World War I. He came to Texas or came back to Texas some time in 1920 where he was general contractor on building an addition to the elementary school in Malakoff, Texas. In Malakoff, Texas, he designed and built several prominent houses, most notably for the Flagg family.

He married my grandmother, Carrie Amanda Miles, around this time, and their only child, my father, Arthur Miles Thompson, was born 30 January, 1922. On the birth record, Sandy R. Thompson's profession is listed as "architect."

Sandy R. Thompson had been married once before he married my grandmother, Carrie Amanda Miles. He had a daughter who tried to contact my father, but my father never returned her letter. I believe that this daughter lived in Ranger, Texas at the time.

Sandy Thompson died on 12 June, 1924, reportedly, by self-inflicted gunshot wound in a hotel in Waco, Texas where he had gone for medical treatment. He is buried in Malakoff City Cemetery.

I would greatly appreciate any information on Sandy R. Thompson.
AL to TX Migrations

One of my family lines traveled from AL to TX by going overland by wagon to MS and LA and then downriver to New Orleans (where some of their things were stolen). Some of them then traveled by boat to Galveston, and some to Indianola, where they apparently purchased wagons and mules (again) and headed inland to western Austin County, TX, where they first settled in 1854. I guess I never quite understood why they didn't travel by sea the entire way, but I've discovered they had relatives in MS and maybe the Gulf route was too dangerous. Also, I think they might have wanted to travel entirely overland, but the swampy regions of LA might have been too difficult and dangerous, and going north around the swamps might have been too long a route. There must have been a TX to LA land route, though, because my husband's ggg grandfather led a herd of cattle from Burnet County, TX to New Orleans, LA in the early 1850's, and died there in the region of yellow fever.

I am trying to connect to anyone researching Joseph Murray's family. He is in the Rusk County's 1850 census in Texas. Joseph Murry (sic) is 35 and is from Georgia. His wife, Louisa is 30 and is from Tennessee. Their children are Martha, 5, Alabama; Mary Murray, 5, Alabama (apparently twins) and Wyley Murry, 10, Alabama.

In 1870, I found Joseph Murray again in Rusk County, Henderson p.o. with his family: Joseph Murray, 52, GA, farmer; Louisa, 47, TN; George, 17, TX; Louisa, 14, TX; Susan J., 11, TX; Nancy E., 7, TX, Eveline, 4, TX; and Josephine, 2, TX. George Murray is shown in my records as been born in Henderson, Panola, Texas. I am trying to find the family in 1860, but so far they haven't been in Panola or Henderson. I did find George Murray and his family in
1880.

Anyone out there researching this family? Corine
Other connected families are the Duke's, Drummond, Butler, Etheridge. Any clues or info on their life in Al appreciated. Good info exists on Panola Co. While in Alabama, Edward's wife, Elizabeth Jane Butler Ross b.1804 or 1795 and his son, James A. died. Also, Pheraby Butler Elizabeth's mother did not make the trip to TX.

Waggon train from AL to TX

Charles, I have not seen that name, however I found a book in the Dallas Library entitled," Astride the Old San Antonio Road", that describes a trip where, in 1853 a Judge A.S. Broaddus and his family, left Caroline county, VA and led some 200 people to TX. They arrived in Burleson county some six months later. The wagon train was said to have been a mile long. It didn't describe the route they took, but you might want to find a copy of this book and check it out.

I have letters written back to friends in Alabama from members of the Goodlet family and another family (no last name given) around 1900. Apparently these people had just moved to Texas. Anyone who is interested in these letters is welcome to read my transcripts of them.

WADEs from 1860 Marshall Co AL

I could really use your help in finding my missing gg-grandparents and ggg-grandparents who "disappeared" from Marshall Co AL in the 1860s.
My ggg-grandparents were Elijah WADE and wife Rebecca Hames. Elijah WADE was b. abt. 1804 SC. Rebecca was b. abt. 1802 SC. In 1840-1860 they are living Marshall Co AL. One of their sons was named William (my gg-grandfather) - see below. I cannot find Elijah or Rebecca (anywhere in the US) after the 1860 Marshall Co AL census.
My gg-grandparents were William WADE and wife Catharine CRAIG. William was b. abt. 1834 AL (probably Jackson Co). Catharine CRAIG was b. abt. 1836 AL (probably Marshall Co). I cannot find William or Catharine (anywhere in the US) after the 1860 Marshall Co census.
My g-grandfather was James WADE who was b. abt. 1857 Marshall Co AL. He appears with his parents William and Catharine on the 1860 Marshall Co census. On the 1870 Marshall Co census he is living with his maternal grandmother Nancy Whitaker CRAIG.
I am speculating they moved to TX during or after the Civil War.
I need your help finding out what happened to Elijah, Rebecca, William and Catharine.
Thank you,
Eldon
ewade@cfl.rr.com

Looking for Hall's in Texas.

Looking for Hall's in Texas.

I'm finding it difficult to get started, since my grandmother and grandfather divorced. What I have been able to find is not much, since he is now deceased.

Here is a quick rundown of what I have. If anyone can fill in any holes up to this, it would be GREATLY appreciated...

Born Kenith Fay Hall (SSDI indicates - Kenneth Fay Hall)
DOB - 09/03/1932, Shackelford Co., TX
DOD - 06/13/1989, Dallas Co., TX

Twin sister, Kathren May, presumed alive, living in Dallas or Ft. Worth area.
Older brother, Howard Barrett, only known info is he was born 01/06/1930, Hill Co., TX.

Father's name Lafayette Owen Hall.
Mother's name Vera St. John.

He, Kenith(Kenneth) Fay, married Betty-Ruth Story (Born 8/20/1935, Mineral Wells, TX) in Breckenridge, TX in Feb of 1949. They had 2 sons, Edward Wayne (06/27/1952-Stephens Co.) and my father, Kenneth Cilvestor(Sylvester) (11/20/1950-Stephens Co.).

I'm really trying to find info on Lafayette Owen Hall, he would have been born probably around 1910. I'm guessing he was born in TX, I have no idea when family migrated to TX. I don't know what his occupation was. I'm guessing there may be a marriage record in Hill Co. around 1929 since he and Vera had their first son there in 01/1930.

That's about all of the info I have at the moment. If anyone can make a connection here, I would be eternally grateful.

Much thanks to Heather for the info she could provide.

TIA,

Kenneth Michael Hall
DOB - 06/27/1971
POB - Mineral Wells (Palo Pinto Co.), TX
Parents - Kenneth Sylvester Hall, Marsha Lee Cowley
