The migration route from eastern Tennessee was through Kentucky, the southern tip of Illinois to Missouri and over to Independence Missouri which was the starting point of the Oregon Trail that went west to the Gold Fields of California. Also the starting point for the Santa Fe Trail that went South
to Mexico. The Ozarks are about 200 miles south of Independence in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. In 1841 the Government passed the Premption Act which allowed people to buy land for 1.25 an acre and homestead on it.
