Ignatius Layton

I am searching for a copy myself, specifically for the Layton family. My mother's maiden name was Layton. I have borrowed a copy from my aunt whose last name is Layton. I saw a response to your question with a web site that listed Dan O'Rourke's address in Overland Park, KS. Have you contacted him?
Are you referring to Ignatius Layton who was born 24 Aug 1768,
who is the son of John Layton, Sr. and Jane Pearce. It seems they had two sons named Ignatius. The second one named Ignatius was born 27 Feb 1774. I was able to trace my lineage back to John Layton, Sr.

"Centenary of Catholicity In Kentucky" By Ben J. Webb

Published in 1884, it lists the Catholic Settlements and early members. I have seen the first "group" listed, but there were several groups and settlements in the years 1785-1800.

I have made a list of these and would be happy to send it to anyone interested. I am not sure I can post it here, due to copyrights. I have also added a few notes of my own from my research--particularly from the Clear Creek, St. Clare Church, in Colesburg, Hardin Co., KY.

I will happily send the list to anyone reqesting it at:
gat891@infi.net

Sheila

database of colonial Catholics

I am compiling a database of English Catholics of the 1700's. Prior to the Revolution, Maryland was under the adminstration of the Vicar Apostolic based in London.

So far the database has over 125,000 names. I would like the database to be a comprehensive as possible and therefore would like to include the names of those Catholics in Maryland and elsewhere in the colonies.

So far the only pre-1789 list I have been able to find concerns those Catholic landowners (about 300) who were taxed in St. Mary's county, MD, in 1760.

Does anyone have or know of any other lists? As I live in rural Philippines, it would be helpful if the lists are readily accessible.
Thank you for your help.
With kind regards and God bless,
Br. Rory, FSC

Need father of Susanna Pierceall

CONFLICT:

In the Phyllis Gross book, PENNEBAKERS & BUCKMANS, PIONEERS, page 49

we have John N. Buckman choosing as his guardian after his father's death, Clement Pierceall. And, then she has him marrying Susanna, dau. of Richard Pierceall.
BUT Sr. Mary Connelly's book has: "At the time of his father's (Francis)death in 1814, John N. chose as his guardian Cornelius Pierceall. John married Cornelius' daughter Susanna, Jan. 28, 1816 in Holy Mary Church, Calvary, KY. with Rev. Chas. Nerinckx officiating. This is same date as the Gross book?
SO, who is Susanna's father? Richard or Cornelius? And, who was his guardian, Clement or Cornelius? We need the guardianship court record and the application for marriage.

Regards,
Nan Wolf
71532.734 at compuserve.com

This seems to join some of the Riney Raney families. I've been looking for 11 years.

I received a copy of a antique letter written on Feb 4, 1872 to Felix RANEY from S F O'BRIEN.
In the letter he talks about "Curnel" James RANEY, and his youngest son Thomas who got married.

The amazing part to me is in the next antique letter to Aunt Hannah Belle RANEY on March 12, 1890, from John R. O'BRIEN, where he talks about James RANEY who was a cousin to Uncle Felix. This is quite a find for me.

My gg grand James was son of Jeremiah RINEY/RANEY.
Felix was son of Clement RINEY and Susannah MONTGOMERY.
Making Clement a brother to my Jeremiah RINEY RANEY and Mary Joan (SHEEHAN MOORE)

my gg grand James Virgil RANEY b.4 Apr 1809 Washington Co, KY.
Bickett Log Houses in Raywick, KY

Sorry to cross-post (to Bickett surname list and Marion County, KY list) but my fingers are tired. :) Please read info. below and slip me an e-mail if you know anything. Thanks.
------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,

I'm a student at the University of Kentucky currently doing research on one of William Bickett's son's log homes in Raywick, KY. I'm hoping to nominate this home (which may have been William's son Anthony's home) as well as what is called the original William Bickett house to the National Register (if I can convince the current owner).
I'm looking for help from all you Bicketts (or Bickett researchers) who may have run into deeds with references to these homes - or any documents you may have seen with a map perhaps (even a sketch) of William's lands and how they were broken out for his seven sons (I do know he divided up his land for his sons *before* he died - so this info. is not in the inventory or settlement of his estate in the late 1820s). Also, I would love to track down the deed where William bought his original acreage from John Ray, one of Raywick's founding figures. I am trying to determine how to go with the nomination - I will probably try to nominate the house based on its relationship to the Catholic migration in Kentucky or possibly something relating to Maryland settlement patterns carried over to Kentucky. The other possibility is simply the amazing fact that log homes from two generations of Bicketts are still located in their original locations in Raywick (survived due to their exterior weatherboarding which was removed years ago; these homes need some work and if they're on the NR the owners can take advantage of our state tax credit). We'll see how it goes.
If you have any thoughts, potential good sources, deed book references, etc., give me a holler. I could possibly help you guys out some, too, as I'll be in and out of places like the Marion and Washington County courthouses.

Thanks so much,
Jenn in Lexington, KY

I have become really frustrated trying to find my BROWN ancestors in Daviess County, Indiana, prior to the marriage of John B. Brown to Louisa FREELAND in Vincennes in 1813. I'm finding that the family traditions of who they were and where they came from don't seem to square with what I find in the National Archives, etc., although Kentucky does seem to crop up pretty often.

I did have my yDNA tested to 67 markers, however, and I am wondering if any of the Browns from the Maryland Catholic migration to KY have had their yDNA tested. Our family tradition is that my Brown line was not Catholic, although they married into several of the Maryland Catholic lines (notably KIDWELL (twice) and WATHEN early on).

If anyone working on the various BROWN lines among the Maryland Catholics has any yDNA information for those lines -- even just the haplogroup (mine is J1) -- it would help me decide whether to look for John B. Brown among the Maryland Catholics in Kentucky or look elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Is anyone related to this branch of the family? People from this line still live in the home called "Altona."

I am trying to document my line for a DAR application. I'm trying to find the documentation to prove that Raphael French served in the St. Mary's Militia during the Revoluntionary War. I'm also looking for proof of a father-son-relationship between him and Elisha Marion French, b 1786 in St. Mary's County. Raphael was married to Mary Ann Mead, but I haven't been able to find anything on her. I'm out in the boonies in Arizona and unless I can find something on the internet, I usually can't get to the libraries and record centers. Can anyone help me?
German Catholic Migrations to Western Kentucky

I know this is somewhat off-topic for the list, but I'm hoping that the researchers of the Maryland Catholic migrations might have some helpful insights.

On her mother's side, my wife is descended from several of the Maryland Catholic families that came to Sacred Heart in Union Co., KY and St. Jerome in Graves Co., KY.

On her father's side, she is descended from German Catholic immigrants to western Kentucky. It appears that these immigrants came in two separate waves (though that might just be her ancestors rather than a general pattern).

The first wave of the German Catholic immigrants arrived in western Kentucky in the early 1830s. It then appears that there was another wave around 1860 (late 1850s to late 1860s). Does this fit with immigration patterns that anyone is familiar with? If these patterns are real, what historical events might have caused these Catholics to leave Germany when they did?

Any comments, speculations, or theories would be appreciated.

Jeff Nelson
Paducah, KY

Any related families (in other words, those that descend from a common ancestor farther back) are more than welcome to contact me as well. Also, if you know anything about these people or their ancestors, please let me know as well.

At least some of John Basil Heard's descendents ended up in Perryville, although the name did not thrive there, as it was his daughters Margaret (Manning) and Barbara (Hutchins) that lived there. Some are still there to this day, and I've lost track of countless other lines.

This is a note I sent to several cousins regarding the mystery of the parents of James M. Queen born 1820 in IN. If anyone out there knows the answer to this, please contact me. Thanks
I found a Family Tree on Ancestry showing Henry Kitchen as the parent of our James M. Queen. ( same date of birth and wives). I questioned this and tried sending him a note. His address came back as unknown. So, I wrote to some other Kitchen researchers and they had no idea. I have attached their email in response. I contacted Ancestry but they didn't respond. I found one of my cousins, who is new at this, had put this information on her tree. I did let her know that information is most likely wrong. So, I attached a copy of the Ancestry page and the responses. If any of you have ever heard of a Joseph L. Clements, we need to contact him to see what documentation he has on this. I am also going to post something on the MD Catholics on the Frontier page. Sue

Catholic Emigration from Maryland to Kentucky - About 1785

One of the "league" of Catholic families that made this migration was the HAYDEN Family, specifically Basil Hayden. In an article named "The Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky" written by the Honorable Ben J. Webb, it states that a friend of Basil HAYDEN was a gentleman by the name of Philmer (Philip) LEE. They lived on adjoining farms in the Pottinger's Creek, Kentucky area. Basil stated that Mr. Lee kept a meticulous diary dated 1735 through at least 1786 (and perhaps longer).

I am trying to locate a copy of this diary as it allegedly contains information on the SMITH – FRENCH & MCATEE families that I am researching. Any information on how to access Lee’s Diary would be greatly appreciated.

Penny Tade Beasley

I am seeking information on the parentage of my g-g-g-grandfather John Payne--m. Dorothy Drury 1794 in St. Mary's Co. dna testing has proven that he is a close relative of Basil Payne. We don't know just how they are related. I have never been able to find parents or siblings for him. I had thought he might be a nephew and searched at the Hall of Records in Annapolis for any proof of this. I found a settlement for the estate of William Payne--Basil Payne the executor and the heirs were his children, Basil and Elizabeth. I wonder if Elizabeth might have been the daughter-in-law, her husband being the son of William. Can anyone help me? Thanks
Dorothy Payne Krumpelman

He was born 1750/60 and had a daughter, Susan who married John Bishop in Nelson County in 1805. John was the son of Solomon Bishop of Virginia. There are a number of Mills families listed as being a part of the Catholic Migration to the Nelson County area, but I've never been able to find a listing for James. There are two men named James Mills listed in the St. Mary's County, Maryland area before the migration began. Is the Nelson County James one of them?
Brenda,
My g-g-g-grandmother was Mahala Mills b. ca 1801, m. James Walter Callaway 3/23/1823 in Ohio Co. Ky. She was left a widow in 1841, then died 1842. Her estate settlement shows James Mills sr. and James Mills jr. purchasing a number of items from her estate. I have guessed they were probably her father and her brother. There is nothing to indicate she was Catholic tying her in with the Md. Catholics who came to Ky. However there were almost no Catholic churches in the state at that time. I have thought of going to Nelson Co to look for James. This may not help you a bit.

I have been trying to find a book(or even a website) with some good basic history of the Catholic faith in Maryland, the timelines of events, laws, events, etc. I was unsuccessful in checking with “ask a librarian” here in MD. I do not want a scholarly treatise nor a fictional account; just some good basic information so that I can understand my ancestors and the faith that they practiced. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Edie Eader

Dr. John C. BUTTLER was a Catholic born in 1795 in Maryland. He married Elizabeth OGLE in St Clair County Illinois in 1836.

These are my few clues.
His eldest daughter was named Margarietta Anna, which may have een his mother's name. Other children were John C Jr, Deborah, Joanna, William O, Benjamin F, Helena, Alvin, and Elizabeth.
John Jr, Margarietta, and Joanna died in the cholera epidemic of 1849.

Dr. Armstead BUTTLER from Virginia was a neighbor of the Ogles in Belleville, Illinois . Could there be a connection?

After John BUTTLER retired, they moved to Decatur Illinois, where he was listed in the 1870 census. There are several BUTTLERs in Decatur. Could they be relatives?

According to my family tradition. all the boys were raised as Catholics and all the girls as Protestants. However, Deborah and Helena were married by Catholic Priests.

Mary Elore Smith Sansbury????????

Hi,

I am a 3rd great grandson to Francis Sansbury (son of Nicholas Sansbury & Hernrietta Mudd) and Mary Elore Smith. Both were from Washington County, Ky and moved to Graves County in the 1830s. We thought Mary was buried at Fancy Farm, but there was no sign of her there.

My big question is who was Mary Elore Smith? I have reason to think she might have been a daughter to Thomas Smith and Martha Ann Dyer. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Regards,
Jamey
mclo3983@bellsouth.net
I believe that John Hayden was related to the Haydens who settled in Fancy Farm, Graves Co., Kentucky (descendents of Maryland Catholics). However, I have not been able to find the connection yet.

I have John C. Hayden born in Kentucky abt. 1810. Rachael Barnes was born in Kentucky abt. 1815. He was in Scott County Missouri by 1840. They married in 1843 and had four children, Susan Frances, Henry Clay, John Clark, and Mary Ann. He died before 1857. They lived in the area of Scott Co. which became Mississippi Co., Missouri, in 1845

If anyone can help me connect John or Rachael to the Catholic families of the Kentucky Holy Land, I would be grateful.

Jeff Nelson
Paducah, KY
