Migration from TN to TX

Forgive me for asking what may be such a basic question, but I have three family lines that traveled from TN to TX at various times - Newton's from McMinn County TN to Tarrant County TX prior to the Civil War, Anderson's from Warren County TN eventually to Denton County TX around 1870 and Waters from Wilson County TN to Tarrant County Texas in the post WWI era. I'm curious what the real motivation was to migrate to Texas during this time period, not simply the desire to migrate. Was it simply the availability of land? the promise of better farming? a new start? Please help me understand what may have been going on (in a grand scheme of things sort of way). Thanks in advance.

Mitchell - Tennessee to Texas - 1850's

Looking for parents/family of Kate L. Mitchell, who is shown in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census in Karnes County Texas. She was born abt 1831 in Tennessee and had two sons there before moving to Texas in the late 1850's. I do not know when she died, or where.

I suspect that Mitchell is her married name. She is shown as a widow in those census records, so I believe she moved to Texas with her husband and he died shortly after the move.
Martin family Tennessee to Texas

My great grandfather, was James Marshel Martin, may have been Marshall and lived in Tennessee at one time. One daughter, Augusta Lyle, was born in Tennessee. She married a Currier. Have no idea where they lived in TN. or when they came to Texas. Settled in Erath County, Central Texas, in later 1800s, not sure of exact date. My grandmother , Harriet Elizabeth Launa Martin Stracener, married in 1895, so was before that time. They lived as best as I can find out, somewhere southeast of Dublin, near the community of Purves. Children, Augusta Lyle, Harriet Elizabeth Launa, J. Early, Emri (Emory or variation thereof), Winnie and two smaller children. May have been married twice with these children being from second wife. May have had son by first wife named Will. Desperate for anything on this family. Thanks so much if you can help.

Can someone tell me how I can figure out the migration route for families traveling from Jefferson Co, TN to Dallas Co, TX in the late 1850s. Would their route have been across Tennessee thru Arkansas and then into Texas? Or down to Chattanooga thru Alabama and Mississippi and Louisiana and then Texas?

My Parks family migrated from Tennessee to east Texas — Lamar and Red River counties — by wagon train in about 1830. I don't know what part of Tennessee they lived in.

My Brown line also came to Texas from the Lebanon, TN, area and settled in Lamar County in the late 1880s.

My question: Was there a regular trail or route these migrations tended to follow? I would think they came across Arkansas at some point, but I don't know how to find out a likely route.

Thanks,
Jayne
Hall family migration from NC, TN, MS to Texas

A group of us have been tracing the John Hall family from Lincoln Co. North Carolina approximately 1787 to Rutherford Co. TN in approximately 1800 to Hinds, Claiborne, Copia Co. MS after 1800. Then on to Texas the Goliad area in 1837.

I am 95% positive the family came down the Natchez Trace from TN. We can see affiliated families that married in from along the Trace in MS.

My question is what trail may the family have taken from NC to TN? The Nickajack the Avery or some other trail.

Once the family decided to go to Texas was the most common route New Orleans via ship. The next infromation we can find the the faimily in the Victoria, Gonzalez Texas area. That is very close to Indianola where many ships came in at that time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kathy

Seeking info on Rev. John Newton HAMIL b. 1808 Tenn. (he signs one l). First found in my research in 1835 in Haywood Co., Tn. buying land and as trustee for Methodist church. In Haywood, he marries Mary Ann FARRIS/FAIRIES b. Ala. 1819, Lauderdale Co. and goes to Red River/Fannin Co., Texas by Nov. 1841. He died 1852 in Ellis Co., Tx. however wife and 5 children continue life in Fannin Co. at Allen's Point. Children: Gilbert Joiner, Mary Jane, Paulina Clementine, Martha Jane and John Newton Hamil. Wife keeps homestead in Fannin Co. very, very close to a Joseph H. Morrison b. Ala.; he may be an uncle. Wife, Mary Ann Farris/Fairies Hamil received 320 acres of land in form of Mercer Colony certificate from Andrew Jackson PARKER shortly after her husband's death; land was located in now Ellis Co., Tx. She kept it until her death. Noticed there are quite a few Joiners in Haywood and other Hamills (2 ls) but haven't been able to make a connection. Since Haywood Co. was Indian land prior to 1823, he probably was not born in that county. Any help appreciated.

Settlers from Hardin County TN to Coleman County TX

What were the migration routes from Hardin County Tennessee to west Texas? The families I am researching were in Hardin County Tennessee for the 1850 census and a tax record show at least one of the families in Coleman County Texas in 1861 but they were not recorded in the 1860 census there. I would like to hear from anyone who has researched the migration or can recommend a good reference which might have information specific to settlers leaving Hardin County for Texas.

I'm looking for overland travel routes between Hardin County, TN and Robertson Co., TX in the 1880's. My Woodward family (with inlaw McLaughlin) left Hardin County around 1883 and were near Hearne, TX by 1884. Then up to Gatesville and Hamilton County until 1895 when the moved south to Camp Wood in Edwards County. I'm trying to collect information on what a trip from TN to Texas was like at that time and what routes they might have traveled. They may have gone through Arkansas because there were relatives in Ouachita County in southern Arkansas. For example, where would they have crossed the Mississippi? Certainly at Memphis but where else were there crossings?

Bill Woodward

WADEs from Marshall Co AL

I could really use your help in finding my missing gg-grandparents and ggg-grandparents who "disappeared" from Marshall Co AL in the 1860s.
My ggg-grandparents were Elijah WADE and wife Rebecca Hames. Elijah WADE was b. abt. 1804 SC. Rebecca was b. abt. 1802 SC. In 1840-1860 they are living Marshall Co AL. One of their sons was named William (my gg-grandfather) - see below. I cannot find Elijah or Rebecca (anywhere in the US) after the 1860 Marshall Co AL census.
My gg-grandparents were William WADE and wife Catharine CRAIG. William was b. abt. 1834 AL (probably Jackson Co). Catharine CRAIG was b. abt. 1836 AL (probably Marshall Co). I cannot find William or Catharine (anywhere in the US) after the 1860 Marshall Co census.
My g-grandfather was James WADE who was b. abt. 1857 Marshall Co AL. He appears with his parents William and Catharine on the 1860 Marshall Co census. On the 1870 Marshall Co census he is living with his maternal grandmother Nancy Whitaker CRAIG.
I am speculating they moved to TX during or after the Civil War.
I need your help finding out what happened to Elijah, Rebecca, William and Catharine.
Thank you,
Eldon
ewade@cfl.rr.com

Looking for Hall's in Texas.

I'm finding it difficult to get started, since my grandmother and grandfather divorced. What I have been able to find is not much, since he is now deceased.

Here is a quick rundown of what I have. If anyone can fill in any holes up to this, it would be GREATLY appreciated...

Born Kenith Fay Hall (SSDI indicates - Kenneth Fay Hall)
DOB - 09/03/1932, Shackelford Co., TX
DOD - 06/13/1989, Dallas Co., TX

Twin sister, Kathren May, presumed alive, living in Dallas or Ft. Worth area.
Older brother, Howard Barrett, only known info is he was born 01/06/1930, Hill Co., TX.

Father's name Lafayette Owen Hall.
Mother's name Vera St. John.

He, Kenith(Kenneth) Fay, married Betty-Ruth Story (Born 8/20/1935, Mineral Wells, TX) in Breckenridge, TX in Feb of 1949. They had 2 sons, Edward Wayne (06/27/1952-Stephens Co.) and my father, Kenneth Cilvestor(Sylvester) (11/20/1950-Stephens Co.).

I'm really trying to find info on Lafayette Owen Hall, he would have been born probably around 1910. I'm guessing he was born in TX, I have no idea when family migrated to TX. I don't know what his occupation was. I'm guessing there may be a marriage record in Hill Co. around 1929 since he and Vera had their first son there in 01/1930.

That's about all of the info I have at the moment. If anyone can make a connection here, I would be eternally grateful.

Much thanks to Heather for the info she could provide.

TIA,

Kenneth Michael Hall
DOB - 06/27/1971
POB - Mineral Wells (Palo Pinto Co.), TX
Parents - Kenneth Sylvester Hall, Marsha Lee Cowley

Isaac Newton Thomas was born about 1845 in Gibson County, Tennessee; he married Margaret Mozell Bass, born about 1850 in Gibson County, Tennessee Their ninth child being my grandfather Zack Thomas. His birth certificate states that he was the ninth child, but the seventh living.

I found an Isaac Thomas in the 1850 Gibson County, Tennessee, census index. His age is 5, which matches the data I have. His parents are shown as William and Mancy Thomas, and siblings are listed as John age 17, Malinda age 15, Maze age 12, and William age 11.

I found an Isaac Thomas in the 1860 Gibson County, Tennessee, census images. His age is shown as 14. The mother is the head of the household, but I can’t tell if the name is Mancy or Mary. Siblings are listed as Frances age 22, James age 19, John age 17, Eliza age 11, Joseph age 10, and Durham age 8. I’m pretty sure this is my Isaac, because he used the names Frances, James and Durham for his own children.

I found Isaac and wife Margaret in the 1880 Johnson County, Texas, census images, and this matches the birth certificate of my grandfather, Zack Thomas, born 1887 in Johnson County. Children are listed as William, age 10, Luther age 6, Robert age 3, and Doctor B. age 1.

Does anyone have any info on my Isaac?
Joseph DuBois and wife Virginia (Steele) DuBois

Can somebody do a lookup in the Tennessee census for me? I don't know what county. My research has taken me here to Tennesse because I just found in 1900 census the family of Joseph N. DuBois, his wife Jennie, and their daughter Agnes. Agnes was the only one born in Tennessee. That was in 1878. I don't know how long they were there. I am trying to find out if there were any siblings to Joseph DuBois that will help in my research to go back and find his father. Agnes is their only child, and although she married a Benton Johnston in 1901 and gave birth to their only child Gladys in 1902, she unfortunately died in Dallas in 1905. So I've got a cold trail for reseraching this DuBois line unless I can pick them up here in Tennessee.

There is a Johnston family in Dallas in the 1900 census that lives close to the DuBois family that was born in Tennessee. I have not been able to tie these Johnstons with my Benton Johnston that married Agnes, but it sure is a coincidence!

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!!
Connie
connie_naylor@yahoo.com

Norma,

Unfortunately, I do not have any more information on Mary Ann WEAR than what I sent you. My line is somewhat distant from yours as we stayed in Missouri till 1905, then went to Washington state. The general migration pattern of the WEAR/WEIRs was Tennessee, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Missouri, and from there they really started branching out to Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, and more.

Good luck on research.

Jeff Ehlers
