My Post office info only covers the years 1790-1833 and this just tells were the post office were. I found all the postmaster by a general search. The key word was postmaster and I had to look at each item to find the names. You are looking for men that were postmaster at Tulare Ca. and I need names to be able tell you if they were postmasters…LOL. If you have some name you think may have been postmasters sand them and I will take a look. If this search goes beyond 1875, I will not be of any help.

I have a friend that is trying to find a Great great Uncle that came from Germany and was suppose to have been a Post Master in Wyoming. The mans last name was Walbrecht. He did find a fort that has a similar spelling but didn't know if that is where he was or not. Do you have anyone in you list for the 1860's that might match that last name, possible with a different spelling? Thank you so much for doing lookups.

My name is Jack Reynolds. Graduated from MHS in 1949. Had an uncle that worked at the PO after WWII by the name of Fred G Thomas, don't remember who the postmaster was at the time. The job was offered to my uncle but for some reason he turned it down. By the way do you know of any other 49, 50, or 51 graduades that live locally (above ground) that are able to communicate by E-mail. Lots of luck on your project. JR Richmond, Va.

Diane you are right and I understand I won’t want it on my web site if I didn’t know where it came from or could confirm it. Maybe I was just getting a big head about it. I also understand even if some people know where I get my info they may not have the time to look for them self’s and even if they did there is so much info to look over and you need to know what to look for or you may miss it. A lot of people just don’t have the time but still need the info, that’s why I’m here to help. I will do all lookups that’s asked of me. The field I work in is the Post office and Military. I’m looking forward to a lot of lookups that’s not to say I will be able to find all I’m asked but I will do may best. I have over 12 hundred post at Rootsweb and have helped many hundreds of people and all seem every happy with my work. My Post info will be coming from:

The Library Of Congress
Post Office Department
Vol. 1 1790-1833

Annette, My name is Jarold "Jerry" Abbott. Ancestry.com has incorrectly listed me as "Gerald." My father was Byron Harold Abbott Sr. My brother is Byron Harold Abbott Jr. The last time I saw your grandfather and great uncle was in Springfield, Missouri at the home of my brother. I was sorry to hear from my brother that both your grandfather and great uncle had passed away.

I am very happy to know about you. I just read many messages that you had posted in 2002, and hope you are still checking this message board. I have just started work on our family tree and found your messages to be very helpful. I had found some of the information you provided, but you added very helpful information to what I have learned. Perhaps we can help each other by sharing information.

I am confident that the Suzie E. Barber and John Stafford Abbott who lived in California (U. S. Census of 1910) are your great grandfather and great great grandmother. Everything checks out for them.

You can contact me directly through my e-mail address of "abbottjga@aol.com." I look forward to hearing from you.

Jarold "Jerry" Abbott
abbottjga@aol.com

It is fine if you do not wish to scan or transcribe what you have. I commend you for offering to do lookups. However, my concern is only for other researchers who use the information you provide and input it into their databases without being able to cite the source - which is, of course, perhaps the most important aspect of genealogical research.

It is extremely important for a researcher to know the origin of a source. I would NEVER input data into my research without knowing its source and being able to cite it and its level of surety. Even if it's from a conversation with a relative, one must cite where they got the info and rate how reliable it is.

In general, most people who offer to do lookups on the message boards at least will reveal where they are getting the data. I am thinking of one person who routinely posts obits and death notices from a newspaper. The data is available online or at libraries, but she still has the opportnity to do many lookups because most folks just don't have the time and her help is appreciated. So, don't think that revealing your source's origin will hinder your goal of doing lookups - it will only help it because more people will consider your source as something reliable if they know where it came from. If I don't know where someone is getting their data, I sure as heck don't want it in my database. Thanks!

Hi Dennis,
Sounds like you have a great research tool. Would you please cite your source's origin? That would be helpful. I'm sure I am not the only person curious about where/why the list was created and in what publication you found it.

Also, I am a bit confused about the volume numbers you posted. Do you only have 1800 and 1816 or do you also have the years in between? Is it possible for you to scan a copy or transcribe it? Or would you be willing to make a photocopy and send it? I'd be happy to reimburse you for copies & postage. Please let me know - Thanks!

Diane
Board Admin
US Postmasters Message Board

Laura, you've got me curious now. Postal workers are considered Federal employees, right? I wonder if there is any repository of historical employee records archived somewhere that a genealogist could make a request for information -- much like the military records available through NARA. This is reply I got from NARA.
-----------------------------------

The postal records in the National Archives do not include a
comprehensive index to mail carriers or their personnel records. Microfilm
Publication M841, Records of Appointment of Postmasters, 1832-September 30,
1971 reproduces records that show the names of the post offices, dates
of their establishment, discontinuance, and changes of name. They show
the names and dates of appointment of postmasters but not their length
of service. These records are arranged alphabetically by State or
Territory, thereunder alphabetically by county, and thereunder by post
office. You may wish to visit our Archives Library Information Center at
http://www.archives.gov/research_room/alic/research_tools/se...
to find a regional archives near you which has this microfilm
publication. You may wish to consult our microfilm Genealogical and
Biographical Microfilm Catalog which are available online at
http://www.archives.gov/publications/microfilm_catalogs.html to see a
roll by roll description of the publication. National Archives
microfilm publications are available for $34 per roll from our Product Sales
Section. Make checks payable to the National Archives Trust Fund
(NATF-NWCP) and send to the National Archives Trust Fund Board, P.O. Box
100793, Atlanta, GA 30384. Please complete and return the attached NATF
Form 36 (pdf) with your payment.
---
Sorry I can't attach the PDF! It disappeared into the black hole of my computer.

Hadn't thought of this before, but a representative from the postal workers union told me contact Human Resources for the USPS.

Presumably that is for relatives who are not too distant in the past. If I find out more I will let you all know. Happy researching!
