Family lore states that My great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Hodges B: 5 Nov., 1847,was one of two sons left in Illinois by their father about 1849 to travel West to the gold fields. "Copperheads, Black Republicans, and Bushwhackers - Pike County Illinois and the Civil War" by Walter S. Waggoner is one of the tools my family is attempting to use to locate any records of the Father of Thomas Jefferson Hodges born in Pike Co., Illinois. In his book, Waggoner mentions a company operated in Missouri by John J. Mudd, and Brothers Mace, called Mudd, Mace, and Company. This company, according to Waggoner, paid for the transportation, and expenses, for men wishing to travel to the gold fields in California. In exchange for this, those individuals signed over 50 % of their profits to the company. I am seeking any additional info on the company, and if there are any rosters, financial records, etc, which may include the names of those men. I would appreciate any info. Thank You.

playing with google leads me to http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/

ask them to suggest other sources too

Does Waggoner list his aources in footnotes or an appendix?
search local old newspapers for advertisements too

>>yes Pages 145 through 174 contain Appendix A and B and C.
