Moseley Rubber Company Manchester: looking for history

I'm interested in learning some history on the Moseley Rubber Company from Manchester. I looked on their website, which has very little information, and sent an email to the company, which has not been answered to-date. I have a relative, Robert V. Clegg, who worked in upper management there from circa 1945 until his retirement in the 1960s. I wonder if the company ever produced annual reports, or had a company newsletter etc. If anyone reading this has a suggestion as to how to learn more about the company's history from this time period, I would appreciate it. Thanks. (I'm writing from Canada).

My ties to S. S. Pierce Co. go way back to the 1940s when my stepfather, Eugene Little, joined the company as an executive at the Brookline Av HQ. I’m not sure what his job was, but I think he was director of public relations and was also involved with personnel in some way at the corporate level

My mother shopped by phone in the days when customers were assigned a personal associate who would call regularly to take their orders and inform them about "specials." The goods were delivered by SSP trucks to the customers at home. As a youngster during the war years I went to the office with my "dad" frequently on Saturdays and hung out with the people who were baking sticky buns, roasting coffee and nuts, taking olives from wooden barrels and placing them carefully in bottles with the pimientos facing out, hand-dipping chocolates and bottling sherry from great wooden casks. I enjoyed my role as an unofficial taster.

As a teenager I had a job at the new Chestnut Hill store on Rte 9 (where Legal Seafood is now). I was there before it opened helping to set it up and was on the cheese counter on opening day (ca 1949?). I worked there off-and-on on weekends, vacations and in the summer for a couple of years and may have eaten more cheese than I sold.

I remember many of the people at Chestnut Hill and management people I met at HQ but, being an old-fashioned type, I hesitate to use their names in a public forum. I did meet both Wallace and Walworth Pierce who were frequent kibitzers at the noontime bridge games in the Brookline Av. cafeteria. My stepfather died suddenly in 1953 of a heart attack while still employed by SSP.

We loved the company and it got in your blood. It taught me what quality and dedication to customers are all about. To this day I enjoy cooking. I hate being called a "gourmet" but don't mind saying I'm a snob when it comes to food and drink. After all I got my training at one of the best!
Susan,
I would love to know what you've heard on the S.S. Pierce Company. My wife has posted replies on this thread. We live in boston and are always on the hunt for more information on the company. My grandfather never worked for the company, but did offer some support when they were in talks to sell the company to seneca foods in the 70's. I'm no historian, but my wife and I do scour many books and online content to find more information. We have collected some small 'ephemera' as it's known now.
Regards,
Nick

Hi Courtney,
Yes its nice to chat about a fine business and some of the people who made it special. In the run up to Christmas it was all hands to the pump. In the week before I worked around a hundred hours. There was a real "team" spirit which had a lot to do with the manager Howard Shaw- he was hands on and staff saw he was out front and not in the office- if SS Pierce could have cloned him...!
Yes, my path took a different direction. As I said I owe much to the US experience- a 3.75 grade point average from a Mid West College helped!I didn't know before hand I could do it but I enjoyed the experience so much. I retired from my employment last year. Two years before that I was awarded and MBE for service to the "Crown" Now I play golf, do a bit of hill walking and visit places in Europe a couple of times a year with my wife. Retirement gives me time to do a bit of research hence this "board" Have a great Christmas and New Year.
Brian.

Hi Brian,

Thank you for sharing your story with me - I enjoyed reading about your time spent working for the SS Pierce company! I shared your post with my husband and he enjoyed it as well. We appreciate you taking the time to jot down some of your memories about the company - We don't often talk to or meet people who have actually worked in one of the stores.

From what I've heard it was a great company and well respected brand in New England, but you're right that there were problems with the way it was managed, which ultimately led to it getting sold. My husband's grandfather helped manage the sale of the company to Seneca foods - but he doesn't speak too much about it other than agreeing that it could have been run better in the end.

Thank you again for sharing your story with me - it was very nice to hear! It sounds like you didn't stay in the food industry after you returned to the UK? I'm glad you have a nice memory of SS Pierce, even if you decided to pursue another path in your life.

take care,
Courtney

Hi Courtney

I left the UK in October 1964 (green card). I had served an apprenticeship as a grocer and attended college to gain expertise in my trade. In a nut shell I was a bit of an expert. I was persuaded to come to the USA by my parents and George Seybolt. I arrived in October and stayed in Dedham Mass., in George's house. He had two daughters and two sons all at various stages in their education. Once I was settled George organised an interview for me with the head of personnel at SS Pierce. I was a bit green, only 20 yrs old, and didn't know much about the USA. I was offered "a start" at the Chestnuthill store but was told not to say anything to the manager about my connection to Seybolt and how I got the job as I would be suspected of being a "plant". The manager, Howard Shaw, spoke to me for five minutes, didn't understand a word I said about my qualifications, my accent probably made it really hard for him, he handed me a brush and said keep sweeping the floor. I was taken aback but since George got me the job and it was paying three times my UK salary I decided to give it a go- after all land of opportunity etc. I lasted three days, got bored, walked up to the large bank of cold counters , which were a mess and re-merchandised them. The assistant manager came up asked me why I was not sweeping, looked at the cold counters and before I could answer shot off to the other end of the store, dragged Howard Shaw back who asked me where I had learned to do that...had to be my accent..I just shook my head, he thought I was quiting so he offered me a dollar an hour more and put me in charge of the dairy counters- I had only just begun!! I ended up manageing all perishable goods in the store. I coudn't progress further without a college degree so sadly I left but on good terms. I made a lot of good friends and think of them often. Sadly too SS Pierce never really used more than 40% of what I was able to do as a grocer- I could have solved a number of the problems they had in distribution across the ten stores as well as the lack of training their managers had which ended up costing the business.I learned a lot too but one thing stuck. I used to talk to a guy "eddie".He stacked shelves but I found out he had a degree from Boston College. I made up my mind then that I would never do this type of work again, I would get that degree and move on to better things and returned to the UK in 1970. I learned a lot from the USA,for all its faults it had much to offer and still does-

SS Pierce stood for quality, right down to the very best canned products under the "epicure" label- where else could you get pineapple spears- no not Dole but the best in the world from South Africa- with the right soil conditions to produce fruit, properly packed in the right weight of syrup , when served just melted in your mouth! Dole was always too acidic due to the volcanic soil it grows in.

I have never shared this wee tale before so please forgive the ramble.

Kind Regards
Brian.

Hi Brian,

The SS Pierce company originated in Boston Massachusetts - and SS Pierce's original Boston home still stands on Union Park Street in the South End. The Epicure Brand I belive also originated in Boston.

Wallace Pierce had 4-5 children, I believe, and one of his son's was my husband's great-grandfather. Unfortunately I only know my husband's lineage and don't know much about his great-grandfather's siblings or his great-grandfather's aunt and uncles.

Unfortunately I don't know who Nina is - but there may be some connection. How long did you work for the SS Pierce store? What was your job with them? I love hearing from people who have a connection with one of their stores!

Best regards,
Courtney

Hi Leah,

I just recently purchased a set of SS Pierce wine glasses online and have added them to our growing collection of SS Pierce antiques! I would love to have them - and would be willing to purchase them from you.

As far as what they are worth - they hold a lot of sentimental value to my husband's family and their history, but I'm afraid they aren't worth very much from an antique perspective. I paid less than $10 for a set of 6 glasses just in the past month. If you enjoy them you should hang on to them - but if you would like to sell them, I'd be happy to take them off your hands!

Best Regards,
Courtney

Hi Courtney, Saw your posting, I'm a bit confused. I did work for the Co. in the sixties and was aware of Norman and Wallace P. One of them had a daughter I think her name was Melody, George Seybolt was her godfather and his daughter Nina had one of the brothers as a God father too. Nina from what I can gather is still down the Cape. I was interested in the "Epicure" label(brand)doing a bit of research over here in the UK. Can you tell me its origin in the USA?
I worked in Chestnut Hill, George Seybolt got me the interview back in 1964. Kind Regards
Brian.

Records for the East India Company are comprehensive and easily researched however I notice you refer to "India Trading Company" so I wonder if the East India Company is what you are really looking for. It was so famous and so powerful that I heve never heard of it being referred to as anything but East India Company. You also mention that census returns say that the person you are trying to trace appears as a Store Clerk in the India Office. The India Office was the government department which dealt with everything referring to India at the time of the British Raj, created in 1858 when the East India Company lost its powers. I wonder if your man was not simply a Civil Servant working in the India Office in London? It is possible that they still hold records of their employees. Might be worth a try.

Thats what I was thinking... she was abroad with the family if the husband worked for the Trading Co. If I could confirm his employment with them, that would help. Not sure what type of records they kept on their employees. You would think that if they were abroad that there would be a record of them returning back to England.

Just more questions then answers it seems....=)

Thanks for your help

Jennifer

Yes, that is her and her sisters. I have all censuses except for 1861 and in 1871 she was a governess for the Bedford family. She stayed at the Bedford family address till the 1891 census, so was hoping that she was their governess on the 1861 census too. In 1871 Mr. Bedford shows his occupation India Office Chief Clerk of Store department.

Thanks for you help

Jennifer

Hello.....

It looks like my ancestor (Arabella C. Jones b 14 Dec 1828) was a governess to a family (Henry C. G. Bedford) that worked for the India Trading Company. Not sure which one, since the occupation that Henry listed in 1871 is "India Office Chief Clerk of store department" I am trying to find out if there are records of the India Trading Company employees... and if there is a way to find out if they were still in England in 1861.

Thanks for help in advance.

Jennifer Jones

Royal Neighbors of America - Fraternal Life Insurance Society founded 1895, Headquarters, Rock Island, IL

For your information - Researchers may find that his/her ancestor belonged to the "Royal Neighbors of America" on an obituary and be curious about what it was. (That was the case with one of mine). This organization with its fancy name apparently was a fraternal life insurance society, insuring men, women, and children, founded in 1895. The address of its headquarters was given as 230 Sixteenth Street, Rock Island, IL 61201.

Have just received information that indicates my great great uncle was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks. Does anyone know how to reach this group? I want to ask them if they have any records (employment, pension, death benefits, etc.) of my ancestor. Thanks for your help.
