DAR LOOK-UP: Conrad Loudenberger--Northampton, Pa.--1776-1779

My mother was a daughter of Jessie Bell Adams Estes (born 8 July 1912 in Tippah County, Mississippi, and died 30 November 1991 in Lee County, Mississippi) and husband, James Oscar Estes (born 4 March 1906 in Winston County, Alabama, and died 26 May 1983 in Lee County, Mississippi). They were married 20 November 1927 in Lee County, Mississippi.

Jessie Bell Adams Estes was a daughter of Eunice Hill Adams (born 8 March 1889 in Union County, Mississippi, and died 31 May 1969 in Lee County, Mississippi) and husband, William Albert "Allie" Adams (born 4 March 1884 in Tippah County, Mississippi, and died 6 March 1919 in Tippah County, Mississippi).

Eunice Hill Adams was a daughter of Carrie Gambrell Hill (born 14 September 1856 in Tippah County, Mississippi, and died 8 April 1940 in Union County, Mississippi) and husband, Franklin M. "Frank" Hill (born 13 May 1850 in Union County, Mississippi, and died 19 June 1902 in Union County, Mississippi). They were married 13 February 1883 in Union County, Mississippi.

Carrie Gambrell Hill was a daughter of Sarah A. Williams (born 13 September 1817 in Greenville County, South Carolina) and husband, George Vaughn Gambrell (born 14 October 1813 in South Carolina, and died 18 February 1862 in Mississippi).

Sarah A. I have a family document written in 1954 that states: "Francis Bartlett Wynne, a grandson of John Huddleston Wynne, enlisted in Philadelphia. When winter came they were in Virginia. The company disbanded and some returned to their homes. Francis stayed in Virginia, reinlisting there, and fought through the war. Meantime, he had married a Miss Whitfield. At the close of the war he received his land grant in Georgia, which was just beginning to attract settlers." I have been unable to find any documentation of his war service, nor his wife's first name. They had a son, John Wynne, born abt 1780 in Georgia. Please see if you have any documentation about the war service of Francis Bartlett Wynne. I appreciate it.

Trying to prove my line and have hit a snag. I am hoping to be accepted in the DAR.

My ancestor James Meranda was born in Washington Co., PA. He lived in the 10 mile Creek area which I believe is/was near Ft. Jackson. His brother Samuel is listed in the DAR book as he received a pension but James is noted as not receiving a pension. His son married Phoebe Stites, daughter of Major Benjamin Stites. Phoebe is quoted in the Draper Interviews the following: "in the fall of 1779, Samuel and James Miranda, lads went out from Jacksons to gather grapes". I am assuming that James is her husband born 1770 and Samuel his brother born 1768. They are both sons of James Meranda b: 1745. I descend through Samuel born 1768 who married Sarah Newland, daughter of Adam Newland and Mary Herrod (sister to frontiersman James Herrod). James born 1745, was a freeman but I have not found where his land was nor where he took his oath of allegience. His father-in-law, John Owens was supposedly killed by indians in 1764, I am not sure of this.

What I don't understand is why with all the evidence of James and Samuel being at Fort Jackson in the Revolutionary War, why didn't James receive recognition for his contribution to the revolution.

If anyone could help me out with this, I would be eternally grateful.

We have very little information on Peter. He could have been born about 1763. His wife's name is Elenor (maiden name unknown). Date of his will was 28 Mar 1831 and it was probated in Bracken Co.,KY, 18 Jul 1831.

Peter is my g-g-g-g-grandfather and I descend from his daughter Sarah who married Joseph Howard (my g-g-g-grandparents).

Need to check various spellings: Hafield, Halffield, Halfield, Harfield, Harefield, Hairfield, Hassfield,etc.

Joseph Phifer was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. His service records are supposed to be in the records of Mrs Jack Nelson, 3027 Pheasant Run, Houston, Texas 77077 (DAR - Kingwood Chapter).

There is a Joseph Piper listed as a member of Brice Martin's Company, under Colonel Abraham Penn; in his General Order signed 11 March 1781 preparatory to the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781

More recently the name has been spelled Fifer.

I am stumped for information about Sara Greenlief Page. As I understand it, she was born 28 May 1828 in Brownsville Maine. Her parents are Chase (?) Page and Charlotte Brown. I have been told Charlotte Brown was a teacher in Brownsville (could be Brownville??) but I know nothing of HER parentage or that of Chase Page. Did someone have a surname of Greenlief and is that why Sara has that middle name? Did Sara have any siblings?

Later information shows Sara married ( 5 Jan 1849) to Loreston Hale Lovejoy of Sydney Maine. He is the son of Jacob and Sara (Townsend) Lovejoy. Jacob is the son of Abiel Lovejoy.

DAR Record Copies as Proof

Can anyone advise the offical DAR position of using "Record Copies" as proof for a specific lineage. I'm asking this on the context of the following three web citations below. I'm finding opinion but no conclusive citation from the DAR.

1. Any DAR application submitted before 1976 should be treated as inconclusive. Any DAR application accepted before 1976 is no longer acceptable "proof" on a new application and should not be cited as "proof" in any other context.

Any DAR application submitted after 1990 may be regarded in the same light as the Rock of Gibraltar. Each fact stated has been backed up with primary evidence, including the marriage of the applicant.

The many-volumed Lineage Books have not been con-sidered reliable sources for over 15 years and DAR does not accept them as sufficient citation/proof on any line.

The exceptions to the above mainly consist of a genea-logical anomaly . . . the information contained on pre-1976 applications was proven by the standards in force when the application was submitted. 2. Please note that, generally, full documentation will be found only for those applications submitted since the early 1980s. two supplementals with same documentation

Can I submit two supplementals together with one set of documentation for the first 6 generations? I have two sets of supplementals like this (2 on each of my parents' side of the family). The first 6 generations are the same then the last 1 or 2 generations are different. Can I submit them together with one set of documentation or must I keep each one separate with a complete separate set of documentation? It seems redundant to submit it twice since it is digitized. It seems that by putting the two together would save some work for the DAR staff. Thanks.

Hezekiah COBURN lookup request

Hello, I'd like to know whether Hezekiah Coburn of Connecticut was ever included in anybody's DAR application materials. Note that there was a different Hezekiah Coburn who was a soldier out of Massachusetts. He was a distant cousin of the one I'm seeking. They have sometimes been confused in notes of correspondents to whom I've written.

Here is the info I have:

Hezekiah COBURN, b. 15 April 1750 in Windham, CT, d. March 1834-April 1835 in Lewis, Essex Co., NY; m. Mary BILL 17 Jan 1771 in Windham Co., CT. Mary was b. 6 May 1750 in Lebanon, CT and d. 1820-1830 in NY.

Hezekiah resided in Windham Co., Connecticut during Revolutionary service. Later he lived in Williamstown, VT (from c. 1790-1805) and Lewis, Essex Co., NY (from 1805 on). He briefly moved to Orangeville, Genesee Co., NY about 1820. But he moved back to the town of Lewis before 1834.

Some family members say that David Bellew was in The

Can anyone give me some advice on how to find my Grandmother, Edith H. (Prather) Davis through the Daughters of America? Or what the difference is in DOA and DAR?

She was in the Star Spangled Banner Council #7, Daughters of America, Seat Pleasant (MD) district. I've also seen it listed as the Capital Heights district.
She was a member in Jan 1918, as a Prather and in 1928 as Davis. I also have a printout for Nov 16, but no year, when her children were presented, after her death. I can't find the year for this.......which is hurting my research.

If the DOA is related to the DAR, her ancestor would most likely be Allen W. Prather. If anyone can advise me as to where I go from here and how to find more info, I would be greatly appreciative!!

Supplemental Question Regarding Abraham Sankey

Is there any help available for supplementals? I know new members applications are the most important, but I have a problem getting a supplemental verifed. Is there any chance of help on this?

Here is the story:
I submitted a supplemental for Abraham Sankey of DE. Unfortunately, I sent a list that showed he paid a fine for not reporting for 2 out of 6 muster calls of the New Castle County Militia from Dec 1778-June 1779. After it was rejected by the DAR genealogist I found that Abraham Sankey signed the Oath of Allegiance in August 1778. (Oh how I wish I had found that BEFORE sending in my original data) When I replied to the rejection letter my reply was that Abraham signed the Oath, and the fact that he paid a fine for 2 out of 6 muster calls means he MUST have reported for the other 4.

The proof was rejected a second time because signing the Oath was before the fines list. I know I have 2 years to resolve this issue, but does the 2nd rejection sound logical to you?

Delaware was not the best in keeping records of their militias. It was mostly the delinquent lists.

My question: is there any hope for Abraham Sankey? I know he was a patriot and would like to have that acknowledged. Any help in where else to lok for proof of service after June 1779? I appreciate your time.

This is my 7x gr-grandfather. I am trying very hard to work this line. How can I found out if the records submitted on him were submitted after 1966? If I sent for them, will the resources submitted also be sent? How do I order them?

He was prominent in political activities and was denied his seat in the House Assembly because of his refusal to sign the Oath of Allegiance in 1777. He was engaged in the shipping business and his ship was seized by the British. He reportedly died as the result of foul treatment by a British Officer in 1780.

Would my ancestor's activity be considered by the DAR for approval? I understand that some who did not actively serve, but supported the war effort by signing certain documents are considered as acceptable.

I have found a lot of sources in the form of compilations in local history books or historical society journals and in abstracts that are published in books. Are these acceptable? For example--one is a will. The original is barely legible and I transcribed it for my own use. There is a book of will abstracts from Orange County New York that lists the people named in the will and their relationship to the deceased. Would a photocopy of this page and the book title page be sufficient? Likewise, many old church records have been compiled in book form. Can I use these? Thanks.

Robert Stockton, b. 9 Oct 1737 in Franklin County, PA and d. 3 Jun 1821 in Washington County, PA... descent would be through his son Robert Stockton (1771 PA - 1844 PA), who married Maria Gallion. I understand he "served as a Private in Captain James McConnell's company, Cumberland Col, Pa., militia, in 1776, under Colonel Joseph Armstrong."

2) John Chandler, b. 25 Nov 1755 in VA and d. 9 Dec 1843 in Taylor County, KY. Descent would be through his daughter, Dorcas Chandler Saunders (1780 GA - 1863 KY),.. who married Elijah Saunders. I understand he qualified through "patriotic service", though no clue how.

Died 13 Oct 1923
Married Catherine Doherty (b. 1 Nov 1834, d. 20 May 1913)

Lost both arms in the Civil War and dedicated the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial at East Rock Park in New Haven, CT. He was 90 Years old when he did this so the family says.

Age 30 enlisted at Derby, CT into the 20th Connecticut Volunteers, Company B, commanded by Captain Samuel Chaffee. The regiment was in command of Colonel Samuel Ross.

Can you tell me if this is correct information and any other battles he was in? Can you tell me where he is buried and if there is any relation to the Hartley, Hendricks, Williams, Granger, etc. families in New Haven, CT?

I hope I am not asking too much. I have never written to the DAR before and don't quite know what to ask or what to provide for information.

I visited the Warren County Ohio Genealogical Society last week, and they couldn't find record of my G5 Grandpa Beltshazzar Dragoo having served. The Ripley Chapter of DAR erected a monument to him in the early 1900's. Did he serve and if not why would DAR have erected a monument to him? He was born 10-14-1751 and died 4/28/1836. He resided in Brown County Ohio but moved to Warren County when he and his wife Martha became Shakers. The Warren County Genealogical Society just erected a monument to the Shakers who had served, but didn't include Beltshazzar. The lady was as perplexed as I once I showed her a photo of the monument.

During the Revolutionary War (based on Murtie June Clark's "Loyalist in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War", vol I),Gottlieb and his sons John George and Gottlieb enlisted in Colonel John Fisher.s Regiment out of Orangeburg prior to 14 June 1780. Gottlieb was a private. His son Gottlieb, Jr. was a sergeant who died before March 1782. His son George was a sergeant in June 1780 and was commissioned a Lieutenant by Nov. 1781 (in Col. William Ballentine’s Second Regiment).

Other records indicate that Gottlieb sold cattle to the SC militia (1 April 1783, paid 5 Aug 1791) in the Revolutionary War.

Benjamin Kelley, born in Bedford County, VA 1761 is believed to be the same as listed in the DAR magazine some years back as being one of 50 in Sep 1777 that signed a pledge to support the Revolutionary effort. He travelled to Boonesbourogh and in Feb 1778 was captured by Shawnee Indians and held captive until Sep 1882.

Are tombstones considered to be acceptable sources? I am working on a supplemental and I cannot find a marriage record for one of my generations. The tombstone where they are buried has the husband's name then the wife's maiden name with the words "his wife" after it. Would a photo of this suffice as a source to prove marriage?
