I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather, Washington Scarborough of Chicot Co, Arkansas in the 1860's and 1870's. He is supposedly listed in a book titled
"Abstracts from Masonic Records from the Grand Lodge of Arkansas, 1862-1869". Does anyone of this board have access to such a book?
Thanks
Larry Scarborough

We've had the sword since the mid 1950's, found in the trash in Lakewood OH. Just found it again in the crawl space of our house. Thanks!

Hello All,

I am looking for information on African American lodges in Red River County Texas and northeast Texas.

According to an interview with my grandfather Stephen Wesley Mims, his father Alex Mims was a 32nd degree Mason. Alex Mims is believed to have died in Denison, Texas around 1912 and was taken back to his home community in Red River County for burial.

I am trying to find any records about my great grandfather Alex Mims lodge membership.

Thanks,
Estella Mims

Greetings!
i have an obituary on our g-grand uncle and his wife, from memory, i don't believe it actually stated he was a Mason.
He is African American, died in the 1950's and wife in 1960's. He and some of his brother were carpenters.
Was there a seperate group of Masons for non-whites? his obit. mentions various "degrees" and "knights". Though big into the church and community groups, could such a mention refer to the Masons?
Can some one send me in the right direction. I had tried to make contact a while back, but had no success.
Thankyou Ghita

I found listed in the 1930 Moultrie county, Ill. census a Franklin Jones (Janes),same age, widowed, born in illinois and am hoping this could be my Great grandfather. There is a death record for a Franklin Jones in 1938 for Moultrie County, found in the State of Illinois archives.

My question is, did you have to be a Mason to live in the Masonic home? I don't know anything about the masons and was surprised to see this, as my mother didn't think he would have belonged to a masonic lodge.

Thank you for your time,
Ruth Weiler

In a bio of an ancestor, I read that he joined "the Wheel." From the article, I can only add that this organization was in late 1890s Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, and that they had positions such as president, treasurer and so forth. It also appears that group was organized by county as it referred to it as "the Wheel of Blue county." Any ideas? Thanks!

Outside the shield there is a "C" on the left and an "A" on the right. He immigrated from
England and lived in CT from 1905 til death in 1926. I would appreciate any help.

Masonic cemetery burial procedure California

If the Masonic Lodge "takes care of" burial for an unclaimed body, do they erect a stone or plaque with a name? This person, according to a newspaper article in the LA Times, had identification to prove he was a Mason, but no one claimed him so his burial was provided by the Masonic Lodge. That's all we know.
[This information was found in a letter sent from someone living in the LA area, no date. The letter said the paper reported that his body was found in the Ambassador Hotel, we guess in LA. The letter writer was writing to a friend in the east who was related to a man with the same name and was trying to find out what happened to him.]
I started to look through cemetery inscriptions for Masonic cemeteries in CA, but as you can imagine, that is a daunting task and I'm not sure if a stone would even be erected. He was identified as "R F Warren" in the newspaper and the time was sometime in late 1940's. If I knew that engraved stones or plaques were erected, I would continue looking through the inscription sites. We don't know if he were living in CA or just visiting. Thanks.
Hiram Abiff - Brothers Naming Their Sons

Hi - I've been puzzling for a while why my 4th ggfather and one of his grandsons were named Hiram Abiff (surname) when all their siblings had very conventional names. I have now managed to work out who Hiram Abiff was (or might have been, depending on which site you consult!). I know that it was fairly common for sons of Masons to be named Hiram Abiff (surname), but what I'm wondering is if anyone knows what, if anything, allows a brother to give his son this name. For example, my distant uncle Hiram was the 8th of 12 children, so I was wondering if his father had taken 3rd degree initiation then, or perhaps just joined, or what? Any light anyone can shed would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Ing

I believe my great and great-great grandfathers were part of a Masonic Lodge in New York in the mid to late 1800s. It is believed that my great-grandfather was born and lived in Rochester, New York, in the 1860s. Does anybody know what Masonic Lodge there was, if any, in that area at that time?

anti-masonry, smallpox and the American Hotel

In 1848, it is alledged that an individual, thought to be a local towns person, delivered a pile of clothes to a Masonic meeting that was being held at the American Hotel in Lima, New York . There was a note attached to the clothes explaining that a collection had been held by residents of Lima, wishing to donate these items to the Masons for the good works they had done. Unknowingly, the clothes had been infected with smallpox which led to the deaths of every Mason in the room except for one.

I have seen many referecnes to this event but i have not been able to confirm it with original source material(s).

Has anyone else heard of this story and if so could you indicate your source ?.

Thank you in advance.

Decatur Daily Review, Wednesday, February 17, 1926

"William Lahners Dies In Hospital

Wabash General Yardmaster Heart Failure Victim.

William Lahners, 456 East Grand avenue, general yardmaster for the Decatur yards of the Wabash railraod, died at 1:39 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Wabash Employes' hospital. He would have been fifty-three years old next September.
Mr. Lahners had been ill since last October. He suffered from heart trouble and high blood pressure. He went to the hospital Jan. 4. At times his condition seemed so greatly improved that hopes were entertained that he would soon be well, but the improvement was always of short duration. Tuesday he felt good all day until about 5:39 o'clock. He then experienced a sinking spell from which he failed to rally.

WELL KNOWN.

William Lahners was born in Gilman, Ill., Sept. 26, 1873. He entered the employ of the Wabash railraod when he was a young man, working for the company in Gilman and Forrest before coming to Decatur. He had been in this city for twenty-five or thirty years, and was known to all the railroad men and many others. He had friends all over the Wabash system.
Mr. Lahners was a member of the Lutheran church. He was also prominent in Masonry, being a member of Macon lodge No. 8 A. F. and A. M., Macon chapter No. 21, R. A. M., Decatur council No. 16, R. and S. M., Beaumanior Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar, and Aasar Shrine. A. A. O. N. M. S. of Springfield.

Looking for anyone who can help me find some information on my ggreat grandfather, William Stanley Lahners, of Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. I believe he was a member of the following Masonic organizations and would like to try and confirm it and would also like to see what titles or achievements he had while in the organizaitons:

-AAONMS of Springfield: Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Masonic) "The Shriners".
-Knights Templar:
-Aasar Shrine:
-Beaumanior Commandery:
-Mason Macon Lodge No. 8 A. F. and A. M.: Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
-Macon chapter No. 21 R.A.M: Royal Arch Masons
-Decatur council No 16: R.and S.M: Royal and Select Masons

I think he had a number of M1296, and was elected March 03, 1905, but I don't know what any of that means. It was in a book I read.

Any help or information would truly be appreciated.

Respectfully,
Jeff

How would I go about finding any copies of records of the early years of the lodge? Would there have been a central body that would have governed the establishment of new Lodges? I have found references that several different ancestors or their kin were Masons. How would I go about verifying that?

Jack Green

Swedish Grand Lodge Pictures 1912 Kanesholm PA?

I recently posted some pictures of members from the Swedish Grand Lodge that I inherited. From what I can tell, the group has something to do with Freemasonry. The people in the photographs probably lived around Kanesholm, Pennsylvania, and my great-great-grandfather, John Ludwig Carlson, was probably involved (although we have not been able to positively identify him). You can see the photos here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcarleton/Charlesan...

I know nothing about Freemasonry whatsoever, so I thought I'd ask if anyone knew of any way I could go about finding out who these people are in the picture? I don't know what kind of records the Freemasons keep or if I can even access them since I am not a member. Any ideas on how to research these photographs would be much appreciated.

Hello...I'm trying to find any info on one of my paternal grandpa's brothers. My grandpa's name was Homer Jefferson Fox, and his brother was Walter Earl Fox. Walter's sons were Irl and Arel. Walter would've been a member in the early 1930's in Morrilton, Arkansas. Later on, his son, Arel (I think) joined with him. Walter was District Clerk for a while in Morrilton. After Thursday (April 29), my email will change to foxdreams@sbcglobal.net Thanks for any info! Jean Fox-Strain

I'm doing some research for a lady who desperately needs to find her grandfathers DOB so she can trace her father from him in order to obtain UK citizenship.

She knows very little, his name, probable town of Birth, but she does know her grandfather was a Freemason, possibly a GrandMaster. He died in Malaysia and was buried by the freemasons. The lady has very little information, her father died 40 years ago

Do the masons keep/release records? Anything would be helpful, and as she is going to be thrown out of the UK if she doesn't find the link soon is a bit desperate.

My great-grandfather was a Mason in the West Union, OH lodge. I have corressponded with the Sec. He says that there is a demit notation on his membership. Is there another lodge in Adams Cnty or surrounding counties of OH and KY who have him as a member?
Alabama Masonic Records

Can anyone provide me with some guidance or suggestions on a records research issue?

I recently discovered the broken and covered-up tombstone of my g-g-grandfather Silas Macklin McGhee in Coryell Co, TX. He died in 1876 and his tombstone had a Masonic emblem on it.
I am trying to determine what lodge(s) he may have been a member of. I am fairly sure that it was not in TX. I am now fairly sure that it was in Lawrence Co, AL during the time frame of 1835-1843 and/or 1868-1872. The most likely Lodges would have been Mount Hope Lodge No. 168, organized in 1852, with charter surrendered in 1928, or the Town Creek Lodge No. 361, established in Jonesboro in 1871.

Has anyone had any experience in trying to track down information such as this? Any suggestions on who might be able to assist me in this endeavor will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Howard McGhee
howard.mcghee@mail.sprint.com

I am looking for information on the Organization known as Boy Builders. I have been informed that it merged with the DeMolay a while back, but no one seems to be able to tell me anything more about the Builders. I would like to know what their public ceremonies were, and a little more about them. I am a Majority Job's Daughter and know they preformed at our installations. My boys are now DeMolays, but no one remembers the Boy Builders. Thanks.
Is there someone who would be familiar enough with the lodges in Greene County to be able to send me a list with addresses? Or point me in the direction of a list already posted? I need to contact them (by snail mail or email) regarding the membership of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, Hezekiah Barr Wright. There is a square & compass on his headstone, so I'd like to find the lodge and membership info for my mother.

Thanks for the help.
Vickie Potter

Thomas may have joined in his home state of
Massachusetts, which he left in 1835. He was in
Indiana for 2 years but seems to pre-date the lodges
which formed in Porter and La Porte counties. There
were some lodges started in the area of Christian
County, Kentucky, during the 12 years he was
there. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thomas Jefferson Snow

I am seeking information about an ancestor who was
supposed to have been an "Arch Mason" When he died
at the age of 49 in 1851 in Peoria, Illinois, he was supposed
to have been buried at the masonic cemetery with the rites
of the order. I have found several Thomas Snows which were
masons, but the time frames don't fit. Thomas was born
in Massachusetts, graduated Brown University and taught
on Nantucket and at Milton Academy until 1833/34. He tried
his hand at business for 2 or 3 years in Indiana before going
to Kentucky for 12 years where he resumed teaching. in
1851 he moved to Peoria and died about 6 months later.
I am not sure when the early cemeteries closed, but Thomas
was reburied at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, with his wife and daughter in 1866.

Headstone markings in Jasper Co., MS; Edwin Robinson

My cousin and I visited the grave of Edwin and Julia Ann Robinson in March of 2002 and made tracings of Edwin's headstone. The letters in a circle around the open Bible are, starting at the top: H. T. W. S. S. T. K. S.
The letters are evenly spaced and I have read them in clockwise.
Does anyone know what these letters mean. He was a minister of the Gospel and had been a Methodist then Baptist minister in Jasper Co., MS. We think he may have also been a Mason. He was born in CT in 1812 and died in 1897 in Jasper Co., MS.

My Mother, Ethel Stoddard Black was also an Eastern Star about the same time. Iwas a Rainbow girl in the early 40"s or late 30's at the same temple. I am trying to trace my roots and have no background information on them. Would appreciate help in tracing the records down. Thank you. Clara Mae Black Lehman

Masonic Medalion

I have a Masonic medalion that is over 150 years old. It is of solid gold and hand carved in Germany. It is in the shape of a German cross. The markings are not the same on both sides. It has the emblems of the trowel and other inlaid on
top. I took it to a lady who deals in old jewelry and she said she had heard of one like this but had never seen one.
She thought that they might be two or three more in existence. I have had it for over 60 years. It was given to my father from the widow of a friend. Her husband had gotten it from his father and since they had no children she wanted
my father to have it. Every mason I have showed it to says they have never seen one like it and are unable to give me
any information on it. Would like to know more about it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Eileen

widow son in need of advice

Dear Mr. Stange,
I gather after having read your postings that you might be able to assist me. My grandfather, g-uncles (x2), and g-grandfather all held memberships with the freemasons. I know from letters that at least two of them had '50-60 year pins'.
Because of the negative yet experience-lacking opinions of my father and his siblings towards my grandfather, I decided to seek out any and all info that may shed a broader insight to this man.
Based on pictures of his headstone, I discovere he was a member of the Masons. Then, the aforementioned letter was discovered.
I contacted our local lodges and I must say, the gnetlemen with whom I spoke were very generous with their time in trying to help me. Each was a pleasure to speak with.
Following their advice I contacted the Grand Secretaries Lodge in Arkansas, and spoke to a woman who had answered the phone. She was of absolutely no assistance and it was my impression that she did not want to be of any assistance. Now, I may have caught her on a bad day, or perhaps there were other reasons for her position. I am still very much determined NOT to give up.
With this info that I have written, is there any assistance, suggestions, leads, etc., etc., you might be able to give me? I would so greatly appreciate it!

I live in Ukiah, CA about 2 hours north of San Francisco and the relatives about whom I am inquiriing were in Arkansas, Glenwood, AR I believe.
Thank you,
Beth Hale
