Please read and offer your advice/suggestions even if this is not your line.
I am attempting to prove my line as follows:
Francis Cooke
John Cooke/Sarah Warren
Sarah Cooke/Arthur Hathaway
John Hathaway/Joanna Pope
Arthur Hathaway/Maria Luce
Simon Hathaway/Hannah Clifton
Simon Hathaway/Eunice Wing
Simon Wing Hathaway/Sarah Elizabeth Braxton
Ann Elizabeth Hathaway/John Hewett
Emma Rentha Hewett/George Thomas Curry
Missouri Jane Curry/Coley Wilson
Mary Evelyn Wilson/Herman F. Lumpkin
me
My problem lies with the generation of Ann Elizabeth Hathaway/John Hewett. Her father, Simon Wing Hathaway, b.1 April 1793, MA, moved south, eventually settling in Holmes County, FL. The book "Hathaways of America" claims to list his children from the 1850 Dale County, AL census. However, they show that Sarah Elizabeth Hathaway married John Hewett, and that another daughter, Emily Elizabeth, married Zachariah Ard. It seems that everyone who has posted genealogy online for this family has accepted what the book says. The 1850 Dale Co., AL census shows a SARAH E., and an ELIZABETH, with no middle names. Everything I find points to Sarah E. having married Zachariah Ard, and Elizabeth having married John Hewett.
I have contacted the Hathaway Family Association twice in an attempt to get clarification. I received one response, which was sort of a 'Ha-Ha, we call that area (SE Alabama, NW Florida) the Bermuda Triangle of genealogy.'
I would appreciate input as to how I should go with this. Please respond to list, or my email at nancyc2@hughes.net.
Thanks, Nancy Coan
