Children in Membership Lists

Can anyone tell me, or does anyone know, if it was common practice to name children in a membership list of early Baptist churches? An ancestor of mine was a minister in an early New York church, 1765 to about 1790 and the membership lists do not include any children. The later lists, after his retirement, don't seem to include any children either. Was that a general rule or, perhaps, just for this church? Thanks for any information on this question. Mary
