Covenant Baptist Church-Ekfrid or Caradoc, Middlesex, Ontario

My ancestor, through much of his life, was the caretaker for the Covenant Baptist Church located either in Ekfrid or Caradoc, Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada. I am trying to locate the church records for more information on his wife's family. Does anyone have any idea where I might write to find these records. They are not in the Ontario Archives. Do they remain at the local Baptist Church in Ekfrid or Caradoc? Is there an Ontario Baptist Church Archives? Thanks for any leads you can provide.

Baptist pastor,Walter Eugene Tanner, was born 1875 in Missouri to Adoplphus and Martha Tanner. Walter married Helen(Ella) Riley. They had two sons, Clyde, b.1900, and Max, b.1907.In about 1916, Walter and his family were living in Springfield, Missouri, where Walter was pastor of the Robberson Avenue Baptist Church. In 1918, Walter joined the YMCA and went to Europe to minister to the soldiers fighting in WW1. I cannot find him in the 1920 or 1930 census. Walter's wife, Helen, is in the 1920 census in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I would like to know what happened to Walter,Helen, Max, and Clyde. Please contact me if you know anything about this family. Thanks brian

Children in Membership Lists

Can anyone tell me, or does anyone know, if it was common practice to name children in a membership list of early Baptist churches? An ancestor of mine was a minister in an early New York church, 1765 to about 1790 and the membership lists do not include any children. The later lists, after his retirement, don't seem to include any children either. Was that a general rule or, perhaps, just for this church? Thanks for any information on this question. Mary

How do I find out if roots are Southern Baptist or 'other' Baptist?

Where can I find out what type of Baptist my ancestor was?
He was born in 1828(NY) was a pastor there.

Moved to several states and listed Baptist clergyman as occupation.

Have a certificate(no date) from Ohio Baptist Convention for life member of the Baptist Convention of the State of Ohio. (Paid $30.00). Would this be a part of the Southern Baptists? Or another group of Baptists?
We think the timeframe of the certificate was after 1860 and before 1875.

I am willing to do research, just do not know where to start. Thank you.
William Logan of SC and LA

The history of Mt Lebanon Baptist Church of Claiborne Par, LA shows that eight families arrived in the area in 1836 and founded the church. Surnames included Logan, Canfield, and Kay. The Logans were my ancestors; their wifes came from Cason and Byas familes. These families were said to have come from Edgefield Dis, SC. The Furman University library special collection references a Sweetwater Baptist Church of Edgefield, organized in 1832, that was formerly known as Mt Lebanon. The common name is probably no coincidence and the families may have been members of that church also. This is as far back as I have been able to trace my Logan ancestry. The senior ancestor was William Logan, born approximately 1784, possibly in North Carolina. Any help in locating his origin would be appreciated.

Baptist sub-denominations

In the article "The Joys and Frustrations of Researching Indiana Baptist Records" in the Fall 2002 issue (Vol. 42, no. 3) of THE HOOSIER GENEALOGIST, I discuss how understanding Baptist distinctives affect church records and how to understand and locate these records.

Among the distinctives, the varieties of Baptists is presented:

"Baptist church records also vary due to the plethora of Baptist sub-groups. In his 1995 study, Albert W. Wardin lists fifty-four Baptist subdenominations in the United States. Twenty-nine of them are represented in Indiana. Due to the small number and late appearance in Indiana of most of these groups, genealogists with Hoosier Baptist ancestors need only to have a basic familiarity with only eight groups." (pages 38-39)

On pages 140-142, the article discusses briefly the American (or Northern), African-American, Primitive, Two-Seed Primitive, Progressive Primitive, General, Free Will, and Separate Baptists.

While this does not hold true for the whole country (major exceptions being the Southern, Seventh-Day, and ethnic Baptists groups), principles presented can be useful to genealogists researching nineteenth-century Baptists. Copies can be purchased from the Indiana Historical Society: http://www.indianahistory.org

Pastor Tim.

I serve as Historian for the Kershaw Baptist Association here in South Carolina. For reference, our largest city is Camden, SC, and we cover all of Kershaw County plus sections of the surrounding counties.

I have information on most of the Baptist Pastors serving in this area, and a limited number of digitized photographs (Very small collection right now, but I've taken to snapping photos of every old pastor photo I see!)

If you need information on a Baptist pastor from this area, (Kershaw, Lee, Lancaster, Richland, Chesterfield Counties)feel free to ask me. I have access to fax and e-mail, and I am more than happy to share what I have!

Have a great day!

Steve

My gggggrandfather, Arthur Ledbetter, established four Baptist churches in Dallas County. In the early 1850's, he was also moderator of the Trinity River Baptist Association and a missionary of the Baptist State Convention. In 1854 he terminated his affiliation with these organizations over "a dispute involving theological doctrine."
Does anyone have information on the Trinity River Baptist Association? I am also looking for information as to what caused him to leave the Baptist church yet still remain a minister? Have read of the dispute in old newspapers even after his death, but nothing specific.

Babtist minister Friendship Babist Church Ky 1831

I am hoping to find a way to research my gggrandfather William Smith . He as born in Va 1784. In his early 20s he moved to North Carolina and married Margaret Wise born 1788 . She was reported to be a Cherokee Indian. They married in 1806 in Guilford Co NC, and moved to Russell Co KY in 1810 along Goose Creek. William's mother came with them and she was the first person buried in the Old Friendship Cemetary . William founded the church in 1818 in Fonthill KY 1831. His son was Ambrose Smith and he married Betsey Mayfield 5-8-1826 in Adair Co Ky according the the Marriage Bonde I was able to look up. On 08-27-1859 in Russell Co Ky, a Will Book E-201 inventory and appraisal when to his widow Margaret Wise Smith in the amount of $ 4,250.
I would very much like to find a primary resource to show Margaret Wise marriage to William, in Family Bible record , and or a Babtism record of Margaret ? I could find no marriage bonde for 1806 in Guilford Co NC. I don't know when William died. I assume Margaret and he are buried in the Friendship Babtist Church Cemetary. My source says Margaret has no marker. William moved to NC in from VA in 1804. Ambrose, his son , moved to Gentry Co Missouri in 1864. He was married 3 times. His first wife was Betsey Mayfield, and when she passed he married Francis Judd. She died in 1850, and he married her sister Bulah Judd. Francis and Bulah were reported to be "shirt tail relation" to Abe Lincoln. I think a sister/brother married Mary Todd's brother/sister. I am not completely sure on that so don't take it as "gospel".
If you have any thoughts how I might document Margaret Wise's background, her indian name, relatives etc. I would appreciate. Thanks.

Unusual prayers

I am trying to discover the origins of 2 prayers that were recorded in 1811 in my family's day book. The family was of English/Dutch descent in the Hudson Valley. They had a history of flitting in & out of Quakerism. They had married in both Presbyterian & Baptist churches. & they had founded a church that they simply called a Christian Church.

One is an odd version of the Lord's Prayer:

haloed be thy name thy
thy Kingdom come
thy will be done
on Earth as it is in Heaven
give us our daly bread

O th that the Lord Would
gide me in the Rite
way that I may prais
him all my days

I believe that these may be exact copies of some earlier book or copybook. The people who maintained the day book were far above this level of spelling & punctuation. They were quite literate & the family had been literate back at least before the mid-1600s when they were associated with early Quakers on Long Island.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

My great great grandfather was the Rev. William Adams, a Delaware Indian and ordained Baptist minister who was a Pastor to the Delaware Tribe in Oklahoma in the late 1800's and until his death in 1902. He took over as Pastor to the Delaware after Chief Charles Journeycake, also a Baptist minister, was too ill to continue his duties. Mrs. Louisa Adams,(maiden name Zulkey) wife of Rev. Adams was taken in as an orphan when she was a child by John Sarcoxie, a member of the Delaware tribe and also a Pastor.
Looking for any info. and/or old photos about these individuals.....

N.S. BASTION Dayton OH 1850s

N. S. BASTION was minister of First Baptist Church in Dayton OH from 1851-1858, except for one year when he served a church in Dubuque IA, according to an 1859 article in a Dubuque newspaper. That year may have been 1851, since he married Eunice JEWETT in Dubuque that year. But he had children in St. Paul, Dubuque, Davenport IA, and Mattoon, IL during those years. Did Baptists itinerate? He had also been a Methodist minister from 1833-1850, and was a Christian (Disciples of Christ) minister from 1858 or 1859 until his death in 1884. His Disciples obit mentions that he became a Baptist immediately upon leaving the Methodists. Any help finding records would be much appreciated.

Doris Waggoner
Seattle

Hello.....my name is Malcolm Hess and I live here in NY state and have been doing some family research
in the local cemeteries. I would like to know if you can ID the picture of an emblem I have found in numerous
locations in local cemeteries. I believe it to be from the American Reformed Baptist Church, the symbol
seems to be gender neutral and most prevalent on graves from 1860's to 1930's.

http://patyenik.home.mindspring.com/BARC.jpg

I have searched the internet for church symbols and cemetery flag holders but did not find this particular type.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Cordially,

Malcolm

Looking for church records or other info on Jonathan Griffin, b. 1820 in Greene Co. but lived in Harpersfield in 1850-1860. He died in Meriden, Ct....funeral severices were held at the new Baptist Church (may have been Main Street Baptist Chuch). I was just reading about Primitive Baptists on the web..in Roxbury, NY and other places...wondered about them too..there were several Griffins listed as members but no first names. I never knew there were so many types of Baptists. D.H.

He then married Nancy Batchelder and moved to OH and later WI. Does anyone have any knowledge about Reverend Waller or how to research more about him and his religious life? Thank you!

I am looking for any information posiible on the link of Drury Goalman Loveall with the Baptist Church. He is listed as a Baptist Preacher in the 1870 Census on Point Arenas, Mendocino County , California. He is also recorded in the minutes of a Baptist Church and Sunday School convention held in San Bernardino County, California 1876. His wife's name was Nancy (Gammon) Loveall. I have been told that the Baptist Church for Point Arenas does not exist anymore today but I would like to locate the church records and find out where it relocated to. Would also like to find out if Drury was ordained or not and where that took place. If there is listing of his parents or Nancy's parents and possibly siblings of both. Thank you for any information possible on this subject. Drury was my great great grandfather on my mother's side.

John W Luke was a Baptist minister in Clay Co, MO from at least 1860 to 1880. His first wife was Ellen Carter who he married in 1852 and they have two children. I cannot find him in 1870 anywhere, but his name is on many marriage records during the 1860-1880 time period. In 1880 he has a wife name Rebecca born 1845 in AL and two more children. My questions are, where was he for the 1870 census. What happened to Ellen and her two children? What is Rebecca's maiden name?

PLEASE...when you submit a query let me ask you to remember to include three items of information:

1. Place the person in time. Definite birth/death years are best, but giving an approximate range of years can be a help. Most queries just say something like "my g-g-g-grandfather" and give no idea of the time period in question.
2. Give a geographic area in a state for your ancestor. Some queries forget to include this. At least put "I think they lived around such-and-said county or town" or that you are not sure where in a state that they lived.
3. I realize that many will not know, but if you do know, please include what type of Baptist your ancestor was (ABC, Missionary, SBC, Primitive, Free Will, etc.) This makes a MAJOR difference in suggesting possible sources of information.

I have helped several individuals on this list with information, but I generally delete messages that do not include this information.
Baptist elder, Thomas West & dau. Abigail, Vermont, 1780-1800

I am a descendant of John Colby (1764-1850) who was born in Rumford, Washington Co., VT. He married Abigail West (1776-1818) in 1791 in Corinth, VT. They both died in Sardinia, Erie Co., NY. John Colby was a son of Ezekiel Colby, one of the first settlers of Corinth, and his wife, Sarah Fowler.

My Abigail West is presumed to be a daughter of Rev. Thomas West (1732-1797), a Baptist minister, and his wife, Amie (Amey) Colegrove/Colgrove (1731-1788). Thomas and Amie West died in Vershire, Orange Co., VT. The Wests had approx. 11 children, many of whom were born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island.

According to records, Abigail and John Colby were "married by Thomas West, elder".

Abigail and John Colby were the parents of 11 children most of whom were born in Corinth. The oldest was my ancestor, Thomas Wells Colby, a Baptist minister who was born in Corinth in 1792 and died in Perry, Michigan in 1853. Thomas Wells Colby was married to Eliza Ann Hoar/Horr.

I am trying to document that Abigail West is the daughter of Thomas West and Amie Colegrove.

Can anyone help??
Thanks
Dutchess Co,NY Baptists

Several years ago I read that there was a Baptist settlement around Amenia, Millerton, Northeast communities in Dutchess Co, NY. At the time, I didn't realize that one of my ancestors, Simeon Kelsey was buried in the Spencer's Corners Burial Ground which, I believe, is a Baptist cemetery (I could be wrong). There is a Mr. Dakin mentioned as a 'founder' or leader of the Baptist movement there. I've looked since at the LDS Family History Center in Santa Monica for books, church records, etc., but can find none. Anyone have any information on the Dutchess Co Baptists?

Reading the minutes of the Bethel Baptist Church in Uniontown, PA, around the beginning of the 19th Century. Several references to Rev. Benjamin Stone (father of my great-great-great-grandmother being appointed to write the letter to the Association, and being appointed as one of messengers to the Association. I realize the Association is a group of churchs (in this case the Redstone Association). Would the letter be like a newsletter for all the churchs, or all the members of the churches? Would a messenger in this context be an itinerant minister going from church to church? He later is Moderator. Is that head pastor? The minutes subsequently report it was agreed someone else would become Moderator, and "agreed brother Stone should be called to preach once again". And shortly later, "agreed Reverend brother Stone preach statedly (sic) once a month." And two months later, "Agreed the money collected be given to brother Stone". And he is never mentioned again. How should that be interpreted? I know he was a messenger at several Baptist churches Southwestern PA at that period of time, and then migrated to Ohio.

Rev George Washington Cherry of Aiken/Barnwell SC

I am researching my great grandfather George Washington Cherry (16 Nov 1863-12 Sep 1924), a baptist minister who was ordained in 1902 and served until his death in 1924. I am a dead end because the churches he pastored at were in and around Ellenton, SC. In 1950, the US government decided to build the Savannah River Power Plan in an area covering parts of Aiken, Barnwell and a small part of Bamberg counties. As a result, everything from within those covered areas has to be moved: churches, cemeteries, schools, and even homes. I have no idea how to find any of those records. I know one of the churches was mount Mariah Baptist Church in Ellenton, and I believe the last was Fair Branch Baptist Church near the Aiken/Barnwell border because he was buried in grave number 1 before it was moved to the White Pond area near Wiliston, SC. Does anyone know of or have information that can help me find either government or church records?

Thanks,

Kevin

As a local historican, I am gathering information on an active Baptist congregation at a church called Beth Eden, located about 5 miles west of Snow Hill, MD. Is there a repository for storing information about churches that no longer exist? Where do I wrote?

Here is all the information I have been able to find on the Beth Eden Baptist Church: "Beth Eden Baptist Church was built in 1901 and rebuilt in 1904, 200 yards from the site of the originial church. Caldwell L. Byrd, 1904, wrote the minutes. Rev. J.B. Pruitt helped to rebuild, 1904-1907, at a cost of $2000. There were 75-80 members, and the church belonged to the Easton District. As of 1949 (?), services were intermittent. The fire that burned the church to the ground occurred in 1959. The Lords Supper set was in possession of Florence Webb, who died in 1966. Elizabeth Payne's niece (an heir of Florence's ?) gave it to ///// Baptist Church, Lutherville, MD, picture of church, some stained glass from windows, and pieces of brick from the foundation." written by Louise Watson, 1979

Its founders were Roger Williams, Ezekiel Holyman, William Arnold, William Harris, Stukely Westcott, John Green, Richard Waterman, Thomas James, William Carpenter, Francis Weston, and Thomas Olney (these being the same persons named in the Initial Deed, of Robert Coles and John Throckmorton).
I believe these are the names you wanted!

Todd's Fork Seventh Day Baptist Church in Warren Co., OH

I'm looking for any information relating to the Todd's Fork Seventh Day Baptist Church in Warren Co., OH. I'm particularly interested in finding out whether the Babcocks were members of that church or not. I believe that the church no longer stands, so I'm not sure where its records would be now. Does anyone here have those records, or know where I can find them? Thanks!

Ordaination & Missionary Ministry

I am trying to find some trace of the early ministry of my grandfather William David Marion Hays, b. 17 Feb, 1858 or 1859 in Texas, d. 6 March, 1926 in Zolfo Springs, FL who was an ordained Baptist minister. He spent the years of approx. 1884 to 1910 first in Cherokee and then in Choctaw Nations, Indian Territory, ( Pushmataha and Sequoyah Counties, Oklahoma) first around Antlers and then Sallisaw, supposedly as a circuit riding preacher and/or missionary to the Indians. With him were his wife and six children.
I'm hoping that someone can tell me how a 22 year old farmer (1880 Census) from Wise County in north central Texas gained ordaination and under whose auspices, if any, he set out with his young wife for Indian Territory. Was he sent and reported to a governing body or did he go on his own? Was he paid a salary or was he itinerant? No one seems to have any record of him.
I grew up hearing that he was a graduate of Baylor Theological Seminary, but they have no record of him as having attended at Waco or Independence, nor have they ever heard of him at the Texas Baptist Collection in Dallas or at the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives. I've also searched every on-line record in Ind. Terr. hoping to find him officiating at a marriage but with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
