Becomming a Saint and St Mary the Virgin in Cheshunt

I had no idea where to post this but, I found on the LDS website that the christenings/baptisms of my 4th g grandmother and her siblings all had the father as St Thomas Mackenzie. I didn't really think much of it when I couldn't find anything about him, and him and his wife seemed to have died before 1841 census as the children are living with an older sibling. But recently on the National Burial Index I found St thomas Mackenzie buried at St mary the virgin (anglican) Cheshunt Hertfordshire.
What I'm trying to figure out is why he was a Saint or if there may be some way of finding out more.
I believe he married Elizabeth Bassett Wale in Thaxted, Essex in 1809, by the burial details he was born 1788.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should go from here to get more information on the type of life they had and why he was a saint. Is there a way to buy church records from these areas and dates?
St Leonards Shoreditch Accessing Parish Records

I trying to locate where I can purchase a Data CD with Parish Records for St Leonards of Shoreditch. I have only found 2 Societies that have these records on hand in the UK but can find no source for these records in Australia.

I have many family members with affiliation to this parish and vast groups of potential family members spanning out accross my tree affiliated, this gives an even greater outlook on my ancestors lives. Paying a researcher is just not an option due to the fact that there are so many leads converging at this point plus the fact I want to be absolute in verifying the information for myself.

I have had a major run around through contact with the church, who told me to contact another.., who told me to contact another., who told me to contact ........... No one seems to be able to give me details of a place in Australia to access these records.

I have also seen on other boards other Australians TRYING to locate these records.

Help................ PLEASE

I use microfilmed Catholic records all the time. What does this mean for research:

http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0802443.htm

Will this restrict access to the records that have already been microfilmed? Many of us non-Mormons use the FHL holdings, how this limit research? Who can we contact to inform the Vatican that microfilmed records are used by more people than just Mormon?

Or could it be if the mother was unwell - would they do it in church without the mother being there?

On the library record of this cemetery it says Mennonite. Does that mean only Mennonite were buried there? I have checked Mennonite activity in this area of Ohio and there was very little.

Both are held at the Center for Evangelical United Brethren Heritage in Dayton, OH.

This history includes Salem in Rockport and Zoar, four miles N.W. The history of each dates back to 1844 (and is practically identical) when A. Nicolai and G.G. Platz began preaching here. They held a special meeting at Zoar, resulting in conversions, accessions, and the organization of a class. In 1846 J. Trometer also preached here occasionally. November 12-16, ’47, Nicolai held a meeting at Anth. Miller’s, which was one of great spiritual power. Ten souls were saved. Whole families were won for Christ and the church. The first church (log) at Zoar, “Busch Church” was built in 1850 on a lot on A. Miller's farm. Fr. Wiethaup, pastor. It was dedicated the same year likely by Geo. A. Blank, P.E. The second (frame) church was built in 1875 by N.F. Platz and dedicated this year, and for some reason rededicated Sept 18, 1880. In 1920 this church was struck by lightening and consumed, and the $1,500.00 insurance on it was applied to the improvement of the one in Rockport in 1923. These places belonged to Dubois, later called Huntingburg Circuit until 1868, except one year in 1861 when it was a mission. Membership in Zoar in 1854 was Melchoir Mayer (leader) and wife Mary; Henry Rohmig and wife; Regina Krueger (Maas) mother of Rev. C.P. Maas; Marg. Bachman and daughter Marg.; Joseph and Lena Fisher; Kath. Beik; George, Susan and Jacob Deschler; Anthon and Marg. Miller; John and Jacobin Blesch; Mother and Kath. Schumaker; Katharine, Henry, and Carl Maas; Magd. Blesch; Kath. And John Krueger; John and Sophia Fundie; Theresa Zimmerman; Fr. And Barbara Meyer; john Kebortz; Kath. Meyer; Adam Long. Membership in Rockport: Aug. Sunderman (leader); Henry and Marg. Niehaus; Chr. And Barbara Schumaker; Joseph and Christina Roth; John and Christina Rohming, and John and Christina Haas. In 1855 the church in town was built, being located in the N.W. corner of the town. Prior to this preaching was in in Schumaker’s home. In April, 1856, the first quarterly meeting was held in the church yet unfinished, but, said the pastor, “It was dedicated with new-born souls.” The outlook for a substantial German society here was then good. 1868 Rockport and vicinity were taken up as a mission. C.F. Matthias, pastor. In 1869 the Conference promised Rockport $300.00, for buying or building a parsonage, provided that it be counted to the mission as rent at the rate of $100.00 a year. For pastors see Volume I. In 1871-72 it was with Huntingburg. In 1873 it was a mission again. This year the new parsonage was buit here. In 1876 it became a part of the South Indiana Conference, Fr. Weithaup, pastor; -78, C. Stier; ’79 with Huntingburg; 080-82, alone, N.F. Platz; ’83, G.M. Hallwachs; ’84-85, J.M. Kronmiller; ’86, E. Bohlander. A new church was built in town more centrally located. ’87-88, J. Mundorf with Owensboro, Ky., added; ’89, Ger. Koch; ’90, to be supplied; ’91-92, J. Bruckert. After 1893 appointments were by the Indiana Conference. ’16, R. Wise, who resigned and the field by its own request was without a pastor; ’17-’19, Fr. Reutpoehler; ’20-21, under the supervision of Linnwood Society in Evansville, Indiana. 1922 without pastor; 1923, Carl Koertge. Church was remodeled.
Then old parsonage being unfit for residence it was sold in 1907, and in 1908 a new one was bought with adequate accommodations. From these two societies went forth four ministers: Mel. Mayer, 1855; Chs. Koch, 1873; W.H. Freshley, 1900; and C.P. Maas, 1902.

A following entry is entitled “Zion Church, Spencer Co., Ind.” and reads as follows:
This society was likely the same as the one called Mt. Senty or Grand View near the town of that name, where lived the Miller’s; Meuser’s; Ernst Hassel’s; Niehaus’; Koch’s; and Bachman’s. A church was built here and dedicated July 3, 1853. B. Uphaus, pastor. But it later disbanded, and merged with Zoar and Salem Classes.
The Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, has a helpful page for locating records.

They list all the parishes and where the records are for closed and merged parishes. They list the churches by founding dates and tell what the main ethnicity of the parish was (Irish, German, Italian, etc) where applicable.

There's a contact listed for the archives for help, too, if you don't know the parish or need some other help.

http://www.rcan.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=feature.display&amp...

I was just wondering if there are rules about who can obtain what records from Catholic churches. Do you have to be a relative, are there time limits, is it up to each church, things like that. Any advice before I delve into this area of researching my ancestors?

Thanks.
Jo

RECORDS OF SOUTH SALEM CHURCH OF WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK
Dates: 1752 - 1823
Records of South Salem Church of Westchester Co., NY - 1752 - 1823 have been made possible by the transcribing efforts of Betty Matteson Rhodes, as taken from the files of the South Salem Church archives. This lovely little Church is still in existence and is located in Westchester County, New York.
Please note that many of the surnames are misspelled by today's standards and for the most part these errors were left exactly as found. There were 61 pages from which the old records were transcribed, and date from 1752 to 1823, and are separated by headings of: MEMBERS, MARRIAGES, BAPTISMS, DEATHS. This is a free database with a search engine.
To access these records go to: http://the-red-thread.net/south-salem-church.html
Also try searching for several variations of your surname

Church Documentary

We are currently in development of a documentary show with an upscale cable network based on the church community. This show will follow many aspects of of the church community, from the people to the relationships, and the glue that binds it together. We are looking for a dynamic church, and within that community, we will focus on the involvement of around 8 to 10 individuals who contribute in their own unique way. From the Pastors, to church staff, to the single and the married couples we want to show how the community within the church works and how it affects people’s lives..

If your church is selected, production would begin in late summer or fall of 2006. The show would be shot in a documentary style with a small, low-profile, non-intrusive crew of 3 to 4 people, who would work completely in the background of all activity.

Pink Sneakers Productions has a unique ability to create programming that moves people, changes people’s lives, and makes them think. Pink Sneakers is known for producing high-quality, creative shows that deliver top ratings for various networks including VH1, MTV, and ABC. We are best known for our contributions to the “True Life” documentary series and are currently filming the second season of “Hogan Knows Best;” the highest rated show in VH1 history.

Thank you for your consideration.
Hi, I have been researching the Edwards family of Logan Co., Ohio. James R. Edwards was elder in New Hope PB church of DeGraff, Logan, Ohio in the 1915-1938 ear. His granddaugher Bessie was clerk. Would love to hear from anyone who might know what happened to those records after church closed. They then attended a PB church somewhere close to Dayton, Ohio. Any answers out there? Will be glad to trade info on Edwards family if I can.

Finding certain Catholic records in Guatemala.

I am doing some work for someone who is searching for
ancestors in a town in Guatemala. Cunen, in El Quiche
department (like a province or state). The ancestors
were all Catholic, but the records were burned in 1972
or just before. There was a huge civil war in the
area that raged off and on for three decades, and the
burning may have been related to that.

The question is then, does anyone know if the
Catholics replicated the parish records and moved them
off elsewhere, so that would mean that if they did,
they would be elsewhere.

That other place could be one of three. Solola (old
diocese center), Santa Cruz del Quiche (current
diocese center), or Quetzaltenango (Archdiocese
center--Los Altos). Could copies have gone to other
repositories run for preserving Catholic parish
records prior to the parish fire?

Take a shot at it, if there is any information that
could lead us to the records, let me know. As far as
the people I am working with know, they believe the
records are lost.

Transcribing Roman Catholic latin marriages - question

I am transcribing some marriage records from the mid 1800s and have found some notes written on the sides of some records. It looks like it may be the Latin form of saying this is the third or fourth marriage for someone. It occurred once every two pages or so, randomly. The handwriting goes something like this:

3sc 4oTo oT 4To cac

Jan 3tio ot 3tio can jt indobius

3an 3tio et 4o\6

The first letter in each case is very curly cue - I don't think it is the number 3 or the letter J, but I don't recognize it.

In addition, I found this notation next to one bride's name:
--Panpuss
Multier Muldum Mrs. Quinn

Does this look familiar to anyone?

Thank you,
Susan

Does anyone know how old a child would be to make a First Communion in the RC Church circa 1874 in the US? Would a girl have worn a veil in this time period? I'm trying to decide if a photo I have is a Communion photo. The girl looks to be 8 or 9 and is not wearing a veil.

In some German church records from the early 1800's, in the birth records, I come across the childs name, illegitamate, legitamate, or natural. Legit lists both parents but illegit and natural list only the mother. What is the difference between illegit and natural? Thanks

Why did people get married on Christmas Day or Boxing Day in 1800s? (UK)

I've noticed a number of my ancestors were married on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day in London in the 1800s. Does anyone know why this would be done - ie. did you get a discount on your license if you got married at Christmas or something?! Sounds funny, I know, but I'm sure there's some significance to it.

Thanks

Kat

Brethren and United Brethren Church Records????

I was wondering if you have found any way to access the records of the United Brethren Church Records online? I have been trying to find these records for a very long time. My husband's great grandfather was a United Brethren Pastor and teacher at Philomath College in Oregon. His name was William Stewart and died on 25 Mar 1928 in Gold Beach, Oregon, buried Old Pioneer Cemetery in Gold Beach, Oregon. We have been to Philomath College but they don't have any records left there. They told us at Philomath that the United Methodist had the records but when contacted they said no. Have you had any luck finding them?
Shari Stewart
We're having trouble finding his. He remembers being baptized at around the age of 10 at a Methodist Church in Colorado (either in Blanca or somewhere nearby) by his uncle, a Christian minister (who has since passed away). However, the church no longer exists, and we don't know where their records were sent, or what church they might have merged with since their closing.

Where should we start? Is there a number to call to get this kind of information, and eventually a copy of the record?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Marriage 1870 - 1880 of Elisabeth WREN

When out at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I tried to check this film for the marriage of an Elisabeth WREN/ WRINN or WRENN. We do not have the name of the man she married (possibly Stewart or Fitzgerald but not sure). The film (1301982, Item 3, marriage returns 1870-1874) had only Part I of the Saskatchewan Land Deeds and did NOT have the advertised Part 2 or Part 3 on it. They are taking steps to have that film corrected since there was an obvious copying error when the film was created.

Elisabeth WREN was born 1852 so we feel these are the approximate years of
her marriage, most probably at St. Joseph's in Albany, NY.

Do you either have access to any marriage records from that time period for the St. Joseph Church or can you recommend any other sources.

I know this is not your job but this is our Brick Wall. Whatever you can
suggest would be appreciated.

AnnEllen Barr ellen@barrfinancial.com

Not sure if "baptism" is the correct term in the Catholic faith, or if I'm even close to posting this on the correct board, but I've got a question.

My great-grandfather was born in Poland in 1878, but was not baptized until 1886. Is this a common practice? Common in Poland, perhaps? I thought that normally people were baptized when they're babies, so I've tried to think of reasons why his parents would've waited until he was 8.

Thanks for any replies.

He was living in the town of Coeymans (what is now the area between South Westerlo and the Alcove Reservoir), Albany Co., NY at the time. I am interested in knowing what the names of the local churches in the area would of been at that time and if any old marriage, birth , and death etc. records exist for the time period 1790-1805. Were did the people generally get married around 1800 who lived in the town of Coeymans in the area situated south of Dormansville (now in town of Westerlo) and east of South Westerlo (now in town of Westerlo) and west of the existing Alcove Reservoir? Would people of married in the adjoining Greene Co., NY around 1800? Thanks for any help!!

HI, I am trying to find information on my family, Reithmeyer who resided in Philadelphia, PA in mid to late 1800's. We have a religious document that was recently translated to English from German and the attending church is listed as being St. Bonifacitius in Philadelphia. The date on the document is presumed to be 1887 and it was issued to Maria Miller who was born June 21, 1874 for her First Holy Communion.

If anyone can tell me anything about this church or where I can get more information, I would appreciate it.

Thank you in advance,

Charlotte

Is anyone aware of the old church on 11th Street in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin? The structure was built by the former slaves that migrated to Fond du Lac after the Civil War. The community of African-Americans were gone by the end of the 1920s. I volunteer at the Fond du Lac County Historical Society and am hoping someone out there is familiar with this structure and is aware of any surviving photographs, stories or records. Thank you!

This question might be more appropriate to the Mailing List. Could someone tell me how to post a question to that list? In the Sacramental Records of the Archdiocese, there is a listing like this: RIEUX, Louis (Honore, fils and Marie Louise 0. natives of this parish). I am accustomed to reading these listings as "RIEUX, son of Honore and Marie Louise". I don't understand why the word "fils" (meaning "son") is written right after the father's name. Could this mean that the father died and his older son is listed as the father? Or does it mean that the boy is named after the father of Honore? Thanks.
