These Chaplain names come off the Register of the navy they cover the years of 1812 to 1836. I had just posted another list called “Chaplains of the Army and Navy” although there were hundreds of names on that list I don’t believe any of these names were on it. If you had a ancestor who was a navy chaplain, or you need to look up one I would look over both list.

Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com

Need some expert assistance identifying denomination...

I have the marriage record for a couple, and nothing much to go on to help break down the brick wall of the wife's lineage...or even clues as to her birth date.

So I am thinking that if we can determine this minister's denomination, I can look in Church records for the next part of the trail.

On 18 March 1841, M. P. Utderman married my grandmother's 2nd great grandparent's, Samuel W Bassett and Jane Ann Dunham. His signature was followed by the phrase "Minister of the Gospel"...
This union took place in Mansfield, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Samuel came from a long line of Puritans (and a few Quakers). I know nothing of her ancestral religous preferences...their descendants worshiped in Wisconsin as Methodist Episcopal, but that may have been due to the availability of the church in this new area.

I could use some help on this one.
My only other birth data comes from census information, putting her born about 1818...Massachusetts.

Thank you.

Burrell TOBBS, Mn. of Gospel: Harrison County, TX 1884

I recently received a Marriage Record for my Great GreatGrandparents, Sonnie Norris and Sallie Robinson who married on March 13, 1884 in Harrison County, Marshall, Texas.

A Minister of the Gospel, most likely Baptist, signed as having performed the Ceremony his name, BURRELL TOBBS. The two r's in Burrell could be s's but, I think they're r's.

BURRELL TOBBS had to be a Minister in the Harrison County area to have performed the service. Love to hear from anyone having another Marriage Certificate signed by the same Minister reply with more information if possible.

I have looked for this person in the 1880 Census but, no sign of him and I do not have access to other years. Appreciate any threads that might lead me to this Minister. My goal is to find out who both parents of the Bride are and who was the Father of the Groom?

Both the Bride and Groom are African American so the chances are very high that the Minister was as well but, not absolute.

I am looking for the meaning of these abbreviations. They come after the names of people that performed marriages for my family back in the early 1800's in southern IN.
I'm guessing that M.G. is for Miniater of the Gospel??
And A.J. is for a Judge of some type??
Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Revd EDWARD LOWRY BARNWELL

I urgently seek any details about the Rev Edward Lowry Barnwell, (about 1812 - 1887) who was a minister of religion in the UK (probably Wales) and who in 1867 published a book entitled 'PERROT NOTES'.

Other enquiries have proved fruitless; does any reader have access to Crockfords and could look him up for me please? Details from any other source would of course be very welcome. To anyone who can help - please accept my thanks in advance!

E.M. Bounds, famous Methodist minister - Shelby Co., MO

This is not exactly a genealogical question, but it is a historical question. The famous minister, E.M. Bounds, from what I have heard, came from Shelby County. Is there any information about his life there or someone or somewhere that I could contact about this.

BTW - my husband's grandfather and father were from Shelby County. My husband was born in Columbia. AND we are researching the surname PHILLIPS (in Shelby Cty. from about 1867 or so) also ...

Also we're asking about an M.E. South minister named Robert McIvoy, who was married to Gertrude Phillips not sure when, but maybe 1890 to 1900 or so possibly

I am looking for information about Tommy Owens who immigrated from Wales to the US in the 1800s; he settled in Worcester MA; was a Christadelphian "minister" preaching in the local square. He started one church that is currently in operation today. I believe his wife was a Hathaway but not sure. He had about 8 children some of whose names I know. Daughters included Florence, Whinny, Jenny. One son was called Burt.

Sister of Mercy 1907-1917

I am new to this list and I am living no rock un turned! I have a brick wall for my grandmother Lillian Odeal BONIN or BENHAM. The family story is that she was a Sister of Mercy in Montreal, Canada about 1907-1917. She would have been 21 years old in 1907. She was born in Willsboro, Essex County, New York. Her parents were French Canadian. My mother remembers my father stating that she was a cloister nun and that she was sent to her parents in 1917 after contracting TB. To my knowledge she never return to her order and in 1921 maried my grandfather Frances Leo Doyle in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont where her parents had relocated sometime between 1905-1910. The only other area the family could have lived in was between 1901-1907 her father Eugene BONIN is documentated as working and living in Norwich, New London, CT. I am trying to find her relgions records. Any help or suggestions for research would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

Judith Doyle Turner

How to Find Family Members in Religious Orders?

I have one Aunt and one Uncle in my family who were in Religious Orders of the Roman Catholic church.
They were Regina Zeug (8-16-1881 - 9-15-1965) became Sr. M. Sybilla and Joseph Zeug (8-12-1875 - 4-12-1917) became Fr. Herculan.
They both probably lived in Illinois. Possibly Cook, Peroria, or McLean Co.
Any tips on where to start a search would be helpful.
Thanks,
Gretta
Lillehammer9414@yahoo.com

Listing of Catholic Priests in Bavaria anddates/places of their First Masses

Hello everyone!

I was looking through my mother's old collection of Catholic holycards
and realized that she had several that were given as rememberances
of the first Mass that newly ordained priests celebrated. I wondered
if this kind of information might be helpful for others, so I decided to
go through the cards and send the names and dates to the list.
Perhaps some of these men are related to your ancestors. Most of
the towns/cities mentioned are in the Oberpfalz/Bavaria.

HOLZ, Joh. Bapt. ~ celebrated his first Mass in the parish church of
Wiesenfelden, July 18, 1911.

BAUER, Johann ~ first Mass in the parish church of Luhe, July 16,
1907.

STANGL, Johann ~ first Mass in the parish church of
Windischeschenbach, June 21, 1899.

WIEDL, Lorenz ~ first Mass in the parish church of
Windischeschenbach, May 18, 1892.

BUSCH, Joh. B. ~ first Mass in the parish church of Kirchenpingarten,
June 8, 1903.

PONNATH, Lorenz ~ first Mass in the parish church of Stadt-
Kemnath, June 13, 1900.

BERGLER (?), Alfons ~ first Mass in the parish church of
Windischeschenbach, July 15, 1912.

MAERKL, P. Albert ~ of the Augustinian Order ~ first Mass in the
pilgrimage church at Fuchsmühl, August 9, 1903.

EBNER, Ernst ~ first Mass in the parish church in Achslach, July 16,
1907. I have other cards showing him as assistant pastor at
Windischeschenbach in 1909.

In addition to these cards, there was a card to remember August
BERTELT, the assistant pastor of the parish church in
Windischeschenbach in 1908.

Hope this helps someone.

Mary Ann
Hello, My GGG Granfather was a Lutheran Minister. This fact about this one relative is fairly new to our family. Would anyone know how I can verify if Jens H. Smedstad was in fact a Minister? He may have been preaching in Minnesota, or North Dakota, but most likely Minnesota. His wife Albertina married a man who was a minister after his death... so maybe she did marry 2 men who were both ministers? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I am hoping that someone out there may be able to help me look for info that verifes that a relative was a Methodist Minister. His name was Rev. Carlberg. His first name and middle name may have been Carl Ludvig Carlberg. He came from Norway, and was possibly in North Dakota, Minnesota for sure, and possibly also in Seattle before coming to Canada.

My Great, Great, Great Grandmother - Albertina (nee Baarlie) married this Rev. Carlberg after her husband Jens H. Smedstad died. She had the following children with Jens Smedstad: John Anton, Daniel, Helen Marie, Carrie - a.k.a Karen, Julia & Minnie. They all came to Canada with thier mother Albertina and step-father Rev. Carlberg.

Anyone with info about where Rev. Carlberg was a Minister in the USA would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and good luck in your searches too!

Ezra POTTER - Church of England Missionary

I am searching for information on my great great greaat grandfather, Ezra Potter. Family lore has it that he came to the colonies prior to 1800 as a Church of England missionary and married a Native American woman (name unknown) and was subsequently relieved from his post. He supposedly came first to CT, then must have been in NY because my great great grandfather was born in NY. My great great grandfather later settled in Wayne County, PA. I don't know if Ezra ever lived in PA. I have contacted the Church of England Missionary Society and they had no record of him. However, they added that they did not sponsor all missionaries who came to the colonies. They did tell me that at that time missionaries were ordained clergymen. If anyone can shed some light on the family story, I'd really appreciate it. You can contact me at my personal email: cmmeadows2@aol.com. Thank you, Carol.

Welcome msg

This is a board where we can all input our ancestors that were clergy. No matter what the faith. A common ground so to speak with each of us giving their children and parents. That way a connection can be made and back one more generation. I have a lot of clergy in my families and look forward to posting them. Glitz
