Searching for Rev. John C. Miller, 1825-1891

I am seeking any information about an itinerant Methodist Episcopalian preacher, Rev. John C. Miller, who was my great-great-grandfather. I have a great deal of information about him, including stories and even a beautiful tintype portrait of him.

However I have not been able to track him down in his early years, or locate his parents. Any help large or small would be vastly appreciated.

He does appear in both the 1870 and 1880 census, where he is living his wife and children in Ohio, but that's all i've found in the records. (Blanchard, Hardin, OH, and Oak Harbor, Ottawa, OH respectively)

Judging by the stories I have, he was a very interesting and dynamic character, and I am hoping someone can offer some advice as to how to scale this wall.

Might there be public records from the Ohio Methodist Episcopal Church?

Here are the key details that I know so far:

b. 17 Oct 1825 Franklin, Venango, PA,
d. 4 Dec 1891 Delaware, Ohio, United States

m. Irene Brown, 25 Oct 1859 in Edgerton, Ohio, United States.
(Minerva Irene Brown, d of Ira Brown b.1804 d.1905 and Harriet Stout Loughborough b.1817 d.1887)

Rev Miller appears in the book "Richard Brown - one line of descendants". being the father of the author, Col. Edward Thomson Miller. However he receives only brief mention since the book concerns his mother's line. He mentions in this book that he has another work in progress at the same level of detail for his father. Sadly however Col. Miller seems to have passed on before completing this second work.

Rev John C Miller was also known as having a bit of a temper, and was referred to sometimes as 'the fighting parson'.

He was active in Northwestern Ohio, at various times living in the following Ohio towns:: Edgerton, Ayresville, St. Johns, Arcanum, Versailles, Harper, Mount Blanchard, Dunkirk, Forest, Lafayette, Wilshire, Mendon, Leipsig, Oak Harbor, Waterville, Sylvania, Liberty Center, Huntsville, Jackson Center.

And Im not sure whether it was his first missionary appointment, but the first of which I have records of was to the 'paulding mission' with Rev. David Bull, for 1 year in 1859 or 1860.

And also, he is listed as being of Richland County, Ohio, prior to his marriage, despite the same book (aforementioned Richard Brown etc..) listing his birthplace as Franklin, Pennsylvania.

Thanks very much for reading, and any help or advice will not go unappreciated!!

Are the Episcopal and Anglican churches the same? I am confused by this. And from the early times were the Jacobites the Episcopalians? I am not sure I am interpreting all of this correctly.
Thank you for any help.

Episcopal priest, evangelist

I am looking for information about my father's uncle, Howard Stewart, born in Canada (probably Nova Scotia) around 1854. He lived in Chicago in 1900, Philadelphia in 1910, Brooklyn in 1920, and in Virginia, Maryland, and probably Boston in between. He was married to Annetta I. Nauffts. Does anyone know how I would begin to find out about which churches he was attached to? The identification of an Episcopal priest as an evangelist is unusual; does anyone know of a movement he might have been attached to given the time scheme and geography?

St. Matthew's, on the South Side, (Kanawha parish) was started by the Rector and Mr. A.W. Quarrier in Apr 1892 with thirteen scholars. Mr. Quarrier, a sterling Christian, in attainments and character, was about to enter the ministry, but was drowned in Kanawha River. Mr. W.W. Adams of the Charleston bar, took up this work, but death overtook him also. Although dead, his lovely character still speaks where ever he was known. Another earnest layman Mr. John Howe Peyton gave time, labor and money to this work. photo of St. Matthews on page 641, photo ot Alex T. Laidley on page 633. Also at St. Matthew's, A.C. Quarrier was Vestryman for 2 years and Hullihen Quarrier a Vestryman for 8 years. I have no connection with these names but will try to add more info to Episcopal message board as time permits.

                   Old Mrs. Quarrier
I mentioned that at one time there were only two communicants at our Church at Charleston, Mrs. Lovell and Mrs. Quarrier. The latter died in the year 1852, full of years, and ready to depart and be with Christ. As Mrs. Quarrier, beyond any other individual, may be considerd the mother of the Church in Western Va, by reason of her age, her holy life, and numerous posterity, who in different places have zealously promoted it. I must give a brief genealogical sketch of the same. Mr. Alexander Quarrier was born in Scotland in the year 1746. He removed to America in his twenty-ninth year, and, settling in Philadelphia and marrying, living there twelve years, when he removed to Richmond. His wife dying, he contracted a second marriage with Miss Sally Burns. He left Richmond in 1811, and removed to Kanawha, where he died at advanced age of eighty-two. By his first marriage he had six children, Harriett, Eliza, Margaret, Helen, Alex, and Betsy. By second wife seven children, William, James, Gustavus, Monroe, Archibald, Fanny and Virginia. Being unable to state the marriages and localities of all of them, I shall mention none. The members of the Church in different parts of Western Va know how much it has been indebted to them.
Where would I get information about circut riders of the 1700s?

My early Mesnard ancesters most likely belnonged to a chaple instead of a church. Local experts told me and I had believed the church was maintained by another church 10 miles away. I had believed that eventhough I should have known better. It was not until recently that I had found some Mesnard records in two far away churches. I had been pondering this "problem" for a week or so until it his me. Having "been around the block" a few times I should have known better. Chaples were always serviced with circut riders. Their records are kept with them and wind up at the church where they retired. I am going to research the two churches but I am sure they are both Episcopal. What had confused local experts is several circut riders became priests at the near by church so many records could be found at the neighboring church. I am wondering where the "head of the Episcopal church was for the colonies/US in the last half of the 18th century.

I have a copy of "An Adventure in Faith" Published in 1936 by James S. Russell, the Arcdeacon of the Episcopal Church and the Founder of St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA.

The book is the story of how he lived from 1857-1936 and mentions many prominent early Episcopalians.

Anyone who would like a copy of the book? I can email it to you.
