I can across this interesting discussion.

I can add some details and clarity.

It is such a mangled name because it is so old.

Maynard is extreamly old. By the birth of Christ maynard was already quite diverse. That diversity must have take many centuries. A vairiant like Mayor may have been Angle in nature. They invaded England (Angle Land) during pre history.

Maynard probably became Mez nard to give the name an English ring to it. The Mesnards were wheeler dealers and there was discrimination to some extent for French and Dutch. Yankee was a derisive term for the Dutch coined circa 1700.
