Classification: Query
Surnames: Mesnard, Messnard, vincent
I would like to locate an archivist who would have access to the Huguenot library or someone else that may have an idea of what I am looking for.
I need to find an obscure reference to my ancestor the last generation of Mesnard researcher had noted but had never listed the source. I assume it is a Huguenot book because of the wording.
A straightforward, backward search is not possible with my line. The necessary church records were lost in the War of 1812. I have had to work both ends towards the middle. The early end was most easy. There was only one male Mesnard Huguenot to escape France. His son Jean moved to Greenwich or New Rochelle in the early 1740s. I have record of a John Mesnard buying property in Greenwich at that time. I would like to be able to link the two men as the same as best I can.
My uncle found a reference most likely in the Huguenot Library about Dan's son Jean being in New Rochelle with an English wife Margaret and attending an English church. A Margaret Mesnard married a Cornelius Lane in the 1750s. Most likely, she was Jean's widow. As flimsy as this is this almost as good as it gets. I am having Jean's previous church checked, the DRC of NYC. I am hoping John Jr was born there as per the Mesnard legend. I do know his first marriage was there. I have been able to find a legal document stating his name as John Mesnard Jr. of Greenwich. There are several other indications that make my case stronger. The biggest is how I pronounce my name. It is possibly unique in that the s is pronounced as a hard s. As far as I know, the only other Mesnards to use this pronounciation are my line and some Mesnard in the UK who descend from the same source, Daniel .
I do not think the referance was "Huguenot Emigration to America".
Any ideas?
