Nevard - A Huguenot Surname?

I have been doing a one-name study on my married name of Neobard/Neb(b)ard for some 30 years. The name nowadays is exceedingly rare and has been through a number of changes. I am now confident that it is a corruption of the name Nevard, and nearly all Neobards/Nebbards that I have found appear to stem from a Samuel Nebard/Nevard who was born around 1665 or so. He was a yoeman farmer who settled in Eye, Suffolk, England.

Despite many years of searching I don't know where Samuel was born, however I know that there is a large concentration of Nevards on the Suffolk/Essex border. Many Nevards appear to be weavers (not sure what they were weaving).

My father-in-law (now passed away) maintained that the family were descended from Huguenots - he said this was mentioned to him by another family member. He also mentioned King Henri of Navarre, and felt that there could be a connection between Nevard and Navarre. But this of course is probably a red herring.

I've had a scout around on line, but don't seem to be able to find any Essex Huguenot surname lists. Has anyone come across Nevard (or similar variation) as a huguenot surname or able to point me in the direction on any resources that may help (I realise it may mean a trip to the Huguenot society).

Many thanks

Toni Neobard

Dady family

We believe that the Dady line of our tree was Huguenot. If so, they descend from the earliest wave of Huguenot immigration into the UK in the mid 16thC, as we have traced them back to Robert Dady, who had children in Norfolk in 1582 & 1585 with his wife, Margaret. I believe Robert may well be the French-born Huguenot ancestor, either brought with his parents as a child or migrating here as a young adult. The family remained in Norfolk from this time until the 1850s, when my GG grandfather left with a local circus & settled in Lancashire about 15 years later.

The earliest close name matches I can find in France are Dadie, born in Angers. Certainly, there is a history of Huguenot activity in this area, but I have no idea how to research further on the subject.

Any help would be much appreciated

Fiona

I am looking for any information on the 'de Milly' family who were also known as 'Milcent'. They were of Noble origin and my line starts in ca. 1570 in Vincennes, France. I would like to know the best ways of finding French info on the families. The 'de Milly' name seems to be very scarce and I have bits and pieces going back to the 1000's. Anyone help with info will be much appreciated.

I am trying to find out if his marriage was performed there and if there is any information about his wife. His name was Marquis (or Marcus) Calmes (or de la Calmes); born in Trebs Diocese near Carcossone, Languedoc, the family fled to London in 1686.

His wife's name was Isabella (Isabel) Eliche (Elliche). I have been told that she was born in either England or Barbados, but am wondering if she was also from the Catalan area of France or Spain.

Is there some kind person on this forum who can do a lookup for me in France I would be most grateful.
Daniel and Oliver Crespin were sons of Theodore and Suzane Crespin and possibly other children of Marenne. Daniel was born there about 1699. I would like any information on this famiy, births deaths and marriages. I know Daniel married in England in 1728 to Johanna Jacoba Heymans. If somebody could look up the birth registers for this area I think the district would have been covered by Poitou Chantres. We, the family think he may have been a Huguenot but can't prove it until we find out more about his birth details. Thanking you in advance from Australia. Lois Bedggood

I am trying to trace my family tree from France. Our family left France around 1598, around the Battle of St Bartholomew. Their name was De La Spine. We have information that the direct members of the family went to England where they altered their name to La Spine then Le Pine we think.

The 3 brothers that we know of who left France were named Guillamme, Daniel and Jacob.
They crossed the Channel to England and settled in the Parish of Holycross, Westgate in the City of Canterbury. They then joined the French Walloons Church.

Guillamme De La Spine erected a silk weaving factory built near the St. of St Peter and employed 100 men. Sons and daughters were baptised in the Walloon Church in the reign of King William and Queen Mary. The son of Guillamme altered the name to Willam La Spine and then to LePine.

We have this information from a old hand written history but it ends mid sentence.
The family later as Lepines emigrated to New Zealand.

Other family we know of were in England (1800’s) and emigrated to NZ. We believe they married in England. They were William LePine and Emma Willet Strange.

My Grandmother was a Lepine.
Thanks
des Marets in America

My 12th Great Grandfather was David des Marets. There is not much in the way of hard facts about him or the family prior to July 1643 when he married Marie Sohier. The marriage record of David and Marie asserts David's birthplace as Beaucamps-le-Vieux and his birthdate as 1620.

Historically it is known that David is the founder of the French Huguenot colony (c. 1678), in what is now the New York City, Northern New Jersey area, specifically Old Bridge and Hackensack. David tried to keep the French language, religious and home values intact and not totally loose themselves in the new world, but eventually, Huguenot settlers melded with the Dutch and others in New Amsterdam. Common variations of the des Marets name in America are Demarest, Demerest, Demorest, Demeree, Demaree, Demaray, Demeray, Demerey, Demoray, Demorier, De Mara, and De Mary. Including these, others such as de Mares, de Marez and more may be related.

In 1938, Mary and William Demarest published "The Demarest Family" in a privately-printed edition. In 1964, Voorhis D. Demarest, then director of the Demarest Family Association, published "The Demarest Family set". These works were mainly based on Louis de Boer's 1928 report to William HS Demarest and has been seriously called into question. Discussion on this can be found at www.demarests.com. I, like many other Demarests still believe in our link to the Crusader "Baldwin" line of the des Marets family. It would be a shame to find out otherwise, but many of us are still looking for facts one way or the other.

I am interested to find out if anyone has any hard, historical research that shows the des Marets line from David and before. He married Marie Sohier in the French Church at Middleburg, Zeeland, in the presence of: (1) David's father, Jean (2) Marie's father, Francois (3) a Marguerite or Margrieta Serville, deHerville, or d'Herville who may or may not have been Davids Mother and (4) Marguerite or Margrieta Sohier, who is assumed to be Marie Sohier's sister. There may be other branches of the family that still have records in France, England, Africa, and Holland. Any information would help, thank you.

My earliest traceable ancestor came to Thorney, Cambs UK in the mid 17th Century. His name is listed as Pierre Sige. He had three sons, Pierre (married to Rachel Bernard/Barnard/Banard), Jacob and Isaac (married to Alis/Alix/Elis Howarth/Howard/Houerd). The French first names continue in the family until the early 19th Century, when the more common first name of John took precedence and was used throughout the generations during that century.

From the mid 17th - mid 19th Century the surname changes in variation of spelling and eventually settled at Siggee by the early 20th Century. John Siggee (b. ca 1870 in Cambs) moved to Nottingham where he married my great great-grandmother, Martha. They had four children, including Martha, Rhoda (my great-grandmother) and John (aka Jack).

I'm interested to know of any other branches of the Sige/Sigee family (plus any other spelling variations). I would also like to trace the origins of the family, ie. were they French or Belgian? I understand they were Walloon, but is this their origin? Would be delighted to receive any and as much information as possible.

My family name is Massey and I am researching their possible huguenot ancestry. I have been informed by the Huguenot Society that this name appears in their "Quarto Series". I can only go back to 1793. Most of the family were involved in the silk industry i.e silk handloom weaver, and silk winders. They lived at the same address, Hobsons Ct, Spitalfields, from at least 1841 to 1881. It is difficult for me to get to London. Does anyone think this line is worth pursuing? If so, how best should I go about it, join the Huguenot Society? Any advice would be appreciated.

Looking for an an obscure Huguenot referance

I would like to locate an archivist who would have access to the Huguenot library or someone else that may have an idea of what I am looking for.

I need to find an obscure reference to my ancestor the last generation of Mesnard researcher had noted but had never listed the source. I assume it is a Huguenot book because of the wording.

A straightforward, backward search is not possible with my line. The necessary church records were lost in the War of 1812. I have had to work both ends towards the middle. The early end was most easy. There was only one male Mesnard Huguenot to escape France. His son Jean moved to Greenwich or New Rochelle in the early 1740s. I have record of a John Mesnard buying property in Greenwich at that time. I would like to be able to link the two men as the same as best I can.

My uncle found a reference most likely in the Huguenot Library about Dan's son Jean being in New Rochelle with an English wife Margaret and attending an English church. A Margaret Mesnard married a Cornelius Lane in the 1750s. Most likely, she was Jean's widow. As flimsy as this is this almost as good as it gets. I am having Jean's previous church checked, the DRC of NYC. I am hoping John Jr was born there as per the Mesnard legend. I do know his first marriage was there. I have been able to find a legal document stating his name as John Mesnard Jr. of Greenwich. There are several other indications that make my case stronger. The biggest is how I pronounce my name. It is possibly unique in that the s is pronounced as a hard s. As far as I know, the only other Mesnards to use this pronounciation are my line and some Mesnard in the UK who descend from the same source, Daniel .

I do not think the referance was "Huguenot Emigration to America".

Any ideas?

So far my searches have drawn a blank, although I have found plenty of information of other COURCHA's descended from William COURCHA and Harriet SIMMS I have not been able to link these to my family. I believe the name COURCHA to be of Huguenot origin. I would appreciate any help. Daniel was a silk weaver.

They appearantly left there and went to Dublin where their oldest son Francois was born. They had had 4 children in SC (Jean, Pierre, Jean-Jacques, and Jeanne-Elizabeth) before they were naturalized in SC in 1696. Does anyone know if Seuvet was a town. I can find no record of it? Might this be a misprint? Any one with information on the Guerris or Broussards in France, please contact me.

Hi. I've stumbled across some information that says the surname Pout (origningally Le Poutre, as it seems) is of Huguenot history. I have quite an extensive family tree dating back to 1500s. The name that keeps cropping up is Catherine Pout, baptised in 1717 and married James Ollive. They were in Canterbury area at the time. Her father was William Pout, baptised 1681, again in Canterbury.

I am wondering whether anyone can help find out whether Pout is of Huguenot history and if anyone has any information about them.

Thanks a lot
Julie Pout

We believe that our family was French Huguenots who fled France, rather than die
for their choice of religion. I am told there
were two immigrations from Canada to America.
I would be interested in variant spellings,
as well.

Fiona

Looking at the census he was a resident there on the 1891 census up until his death.

Am I correct in thinking that you have to be a Hugenot to be a resident there ?

My gran always said that we had French blood but she died when I was quite young and nobody in the family seemed to know where the French bllod came into play.

I'm rather excited to make this discovery. If anyone can advise on what records I could get my hands on to find out more about James Huard and to trace evenb further back that would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi all,

Looking for help expanding the French Huguenot side of my family tree.

JOHN (JEAN) GODIER - b: 30/11/1752
MARY FORECAST - Chr: 2/2/1755
Married: 23/10/1775 at Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London

Parents of John (Jean) Godier
JEAN GOUDIERE - b:16/1/1727
ESTER DEHEULE (?De Heulle?)

Parents of Jean Goudiere
ISAAC GOUDIERE - b.2/2/1703
ESTHER BIZOU
Married: August 1723, French Church, Threadneedle St, London

Parents of Isaac Goudiere
ISAAC GOUDIERE
CATHERINE LUCAS

I believe Mary Forecast is either the daughter or niece of BENJAMIN FORECAST (chr: Dec 31 1733) and MARY CANNELL (b. abt 1735) - I have seen this surname also spelt Forquaist and Ferques - would be most grateful if anyone can confirm/deny this for me.

If anyone has a connection to this tree or has more information that can help - I would dearly love to hear from you.
Ferdinand PETITJEAN * Aus der Uckermark nach Australien 1884

FROM: http://www.hugenotten.de/php/forum/forum.php
"New entry" 17.06.2008

I know there are a number of Huguenot researchers in your part of the world, but I believe you are the first to the DHG forum.

While it is true that Huguenot and Waldensian refugees did settle in the Uckermark after 1685, it may not be true that the names on your list are all Huguenot. In fact I stopped after ANDRE having found very few listings in the LDS archives with the exceptions of LAMBERT & ANDRE which are too numerous to search with only a surname. This lack of relevant information is due to the partial, hit or miss completely nature of the extracted portion of the archives, plus the paucity of relevant prior research showing up in the contributed portion. And so far that doesn’t provide much to work with, but there are still other sources to try.

http://www.familie-loyal.de
There are some interesting possibilities here for instance.

Which internet sources have you used already? There are several focused on Uckermark plus the Huguenots-Walloons-Europe Forum on Rootsweb. If you search the archives for the HWE Mailing List with DEHON, you will find several interesting postings by a couple of the better researchers in this area, as well as indications that this family and possibly others you have named may have been Dutch rather than French Huguenots. Both of these researchers have worked with these "Pre 1685" refugees and it's starting to look like some of your investigation might be tending in that direction. Also the LDS has a good source for Huguenots in Wallmow c. 1710 on one of their microfilms, if that’s helpful to you at some point and you can read handwritten French.

Your 2xGGF, Ferdinand PETITJEAN, would be a great point ancestor to begin your investigation. However it seems that your list of surnames is involved in his ancestry somehow; or is that incorrect? PETITJEAN has been on this forum previously and you can search this forum as well. There are a number of citations for PETITJEAN listed in Muret (1885) [No easy access] and several in Béringuier (1888), which can be read through Google Books. While your immigrant ancestor may not have been living in Berlin at that time, the goal of your investigation would be to start out by identifying the correct one and see what happens from there.

Regards,
KA

Jacob DELACHAUX was born Jaques Francois DELACHAUX in 1748 in London, christened in the Huguenot Church of the Artillery His parents were Jean Nicolas DELACHAUX of Gilly Canton Vaud, Switzerland and Jeanne Francoise LOUP of London. Jacob's grandparents were Jean Etienne DELACHAUX and Danielle Pernette ROLAZ of Gilly, Canton Vaud, Switzerland.

In 1749, Jean Nicolas DELACHAUX and his brother, Jacob emigrated from London to Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1768, Jacob (Jaques Francois) DELACHAUX left London, also for Nova Scotia. The ship met foul weather and landed in Charleston, SC. Jacob, his wife and children were given land in 96 District, SC and joined a Huguenot settlement, New Bordeaux, in what is now McCormick co, SC.

Jacob DELACHAUX, his father Jean and his uncle Jacob were all blacksmiths. DELACHAUX is a rare surname, except in Switzerland. Yet there were other DELACHAUX in Nova Scotia who were Catholic. They lived in the Louisbourg, Cape Breton area.

Please contact me if you are familiar with any of these families. Sandra Delashaw Warden, Tulsa

As late as the 1881 census some of my direct ancestors were listed as SULLY, and before that the "E" seems to have been optional. I'm as far back as Joseph Sulley/Sully who is SULLEY on his 1794 marriage certificate but SULLY on the "Market Harborough list of tradesmen" (he was a tailor). Any info gratefully received, Robert

Hi list

I have not found mention of a DESPARD family name in any Huguenot site.
I have some written documents that claim a Gertrude Frances Despard, a Huguenot, may have married a Matthew MEREDITH in or near Rosenallis in Ireland about 1738.

Anyone with knowledge of the Irish Huguenots at this time, or the name itself, would be appreciated.

Barrie Wright

Adelaide
South Australia

Origins of Name JAGOT JARVIS ?possibly Huguenot?

I have a bit of a family mystery. My father hailed from London and his name was James Jagot Jarvis, the Jagot bit being a middle name as opposed to a double barrel. My eldest sister (the first born) is Julie Jagot Jarvis, but my other sister and myself do not bear this middle name. The story is that Jagot is a name handed down to the first born, no matter what sex they are and it has been a tradition of this branch of the Jarvis family for goodness knows how long. In my research, it has been suggested that this is of huguenot origin and I would really like to find out. Julie has handed down the name to her son, but has chosen to make it a double barrel because it is obviously a name that needs to be passed on for some reason now forgotten and that is a way of making it more permanent. Has anyone any ideas, please? Where should I look to find out the Jagot Jarvis link, has anyone ever heard of it, etc. Many thanks indeed!

There is a family bible which was damaged during the blitz and now only goes back to "William Vendome Son Born April 25 1806 Baptised at Christ Church Spitalfield."
BENOY: Huguenots of Devon/Cornwall, ENG? (late 1600s)

Hello,
My father was convinced that our ancestors were French Huguenots and that they have held the name Benoy since before they left France.
The only Benoys that I have found in England that were recorded as being Huguenots were Jean and Marie Benoy, of Threadneedle Street in London, who christened their baby daughter - Susanne - on 23 Dec 1694. I have no reason to believe there is any direct relationship with these Benoys but it does confirm that there were Benoys who were Huguenots.

In fact, my brother's travels in France convinced him that Benoy is the Huguenot spelling of Benoit.

The earliest records that I have found, for which I am almost certain of a family link, were in Werrington as follows:
Modestie Benoy married John Facey 3 May 1682
Richard Benoy married Mary Geach 6 Dec 1686
Chariti Benoy married Peter Wicket 4 Mar 1688/89
and	John Benoy married Mary Hedon 21 Feb 1691/92

I also found
Jane Benoy who married William Wicket in 1683 in Jacobstow, Cornwall

I believe these were siblings and that there father was Isaac Benoy who was buried in Werrington on 7 Oct 1694.

Has anyone come across any Benoy Huguenots?
Has anyone come across Benoys in Devon before 1882?
Can anyone give me any information about Huguenots in the Werrington area of Devon (now Cornwall)?
Thank you

The name first appears in Hants. in the late 1500s. Please does anyone have any info on the origins of this family? Many thanks. Jay

I have an ancestor of this surname, who came to London in the 1700's, before 1750, I think. Family legend says that this ancestor, Stephen Pieronnet, was a Huguenot. However, there is also some suggestion that his son, James, was a Quaker. It is my understanding that Huguenots were not usually Quakers, but my understanding is very tenuous, at best.

Is anyone familar with the name of Peironnet as a Huguenot surname?

Santa T.

Reply to the archive:

Tim,

The LDS listings under IGI/British Isles for GOOZEE and variations in London are often transcribed from parish register sources.
http://www.familysearch.org
Indeed they are too numerous to catalog without a relevant starting point. Those prior to 1700 may be worthy of particular note [GOOZEY, GOOSEY, GOOSIE].
Also interesting, on superficial inspection, is the presence and possible relationship of surnames such as COSSEE, COSSHEE, COSSEY and COUSEY at some of the same London locations as the G* variations.

As far as characterizing a biblical influence on Huguenot first names, I would say this. I believe that numerous Huguenot families were well represented among the early adopters of certain first names which were derived from the Old Testament: Abraham, Daniel, David, Solomon, Moise, Isaac, Ester Judith etc., for example. This may be due in part to greater protestant emphasis on the Old Testament rather than just the New, and may be a result of a wider protestant possession and literacy of biblical literature by laymen, whereas catholic practice was more likely to restrict possession and reading of the Bible (in Latin) to the priests. I do not believe that the use of ‘Old Testament’ first names occurs as early or too the same relative extent among the catholic population of France as it relates to the era of Huguenot research. However as I have much less experience with the investigation of catholic listings of the same time period, I will yield to sufficient evidence if it can be presented.

Regards,
KA

DIPROSE | DEEPROSE in Sussex

A reply to the archive:

Eunice,

I took DIPROSE on a run through the LDS database and found only two listings from Rye.
http://www.familysearch.org

The better one is Florence Sarah DEEPROSE, ch. 1890. It is an extracted listing with Source Information crediting the Bishop’s transcripts from the parish church of Rye. The range of Dates given on the listing, 1880-1893, indicate that apparently only this late information has been transferred to the internet. However the transcripts themselves show a beginning date of 1606 and would seemingly be most relevant to your investigation.

The connection of DEEPROSE with Rye seems to indicate that this may be a valid variant, whereas the other potential surnames you suggested didn’t show any connection with Sussex. Nevertheless, DIPROSE does have several listings, extracted from their respective documentary sources, that are located in Sussex before 1650. The christening of Elizabeth DIPROSE in Frant, Sussex, in 1548 for example, establishes the presence of the family name even earlier and it seems this is somewhat too early and in the wrong location for anything belonging in the general Huguenot context.

Also interesting is the presence in the LDS listings of the name DE BRAIOSE | DE BRAOSE in early Sussex. The confusion of B and P occurs as a known phonetic transition. The listings (c. 1100-1300) are quite early, so plenty of time for alteration. These listings however are contributed, meaning that no references are shown, but that does not make the information inaccurate or imply that there are no references. Turn your skepticism up a notch or two and see what you can find out. I know nothing further at this point. This may only be a phonetic coincidence. However the confirmation of historical references here would be interesting and a search of Google Books is also tempting. They have some old and unusual references. If this line of information can be followed, then the consideration of a prospective origin that follows a Norman hypothesis would seem to be indicated.

Regards,
KA

ONHB!
Does anyone know how to get access to (and how to find the right parish) the records of the reformed churches in Geneva? Interested in getting information on a spaniard that arrived in Geneva around 1740 (Josef Galindo de Urrea) and that later left the a reformed church in Geneve (1746) and became a member of the french reformed church in Rotterdam the same year.

Sandtoft Lincolnshire immigrants and Turkwine/Teurquin family

I am looking for information on the origin of the Turkwin(e) family of the Haxey Lincolnshire area.

My gggg grandfather James Turkwin born in Haxey, Lincolnshire (abt 1782) married Mary Hyde of Owston (born abt 1786) in 1805 in Owston. James and family are tailors and the family including sons James and Ferdinand(o) moved to the Sheffield/Rotherham Yorkshire area where most of my family come from --I am descended from his son James.

There are records in the IGI of the name Turkwin in that area of Lincolnshire back to the mid 1600's. I understand the Turkwin/Turkwine name is a varient spelling from the Huguenot immigrants (Teurquin, Turquine) and the family likely arrived in Sandtoft in the early 1600's as part of the Huguenots-Walloons.
I would like to know of any information sources that would help me either trace back the ancestry of my specific Turkwin line and emergence of the name, or learn about the likely arrival of this family in the Sandtoft area.

With thanks
Bernadette
Anyone researching the Berry/Dewberry.Dubury/Dubrey and various spellings who were French Huguenots who settled in England. The family changed their name to Berry when they came to England and settled in the Fens in the Upwell/Wisbech area where they farmed. I have traced the family name back to Samuel Berry who married Elizabeth Thombleson in 1785 in Upwell, Norfolk, England and where he died in 1826 at the age of 60. I am trying to locate where he was born and where they came from in France. There were other siblings: William, John, Adah and...?? all born around 1750-65.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Hello...I am posting this to hopefully receive ANY information on this surname. I did not grow up with my father, Rene Battinau who passed away a few years ago in his early 60's. He was from the Alsace-Lorraine area of France. His mother's name was Mimi and he came to the U.S. when he was 12 yrs. old - he was born in March, 1939. I saw him sporadically and he told me I was a French Huguenot ..I would love more information on my heritage... I was told that his father was a French journalist killed in WWII and his mother, Mimi worked for the French Underground and married a U.S. serviceman, Charles Franklin who brought my grandmother, father and his sister, Rosemarie to the U.S. They located to Valparaiso, IN. Any information would be very valuable to me. Thank you.

I am looking for for confirmation about Daniel Giraud's father His father's name may have been Etienne? or Antoine? Daniel immigrated to the USA about ca 1681- 1688. Daniel was probably a native of the Province of Saintonge or Poitou France and living in La Rochelle prior leaving France. He may have immigrated to the USA via London. Records show he was on the list of persons naturlized by Royal Letters-Westminster and apparently returned to England from the USA to take the oath of allegiance. Daniel shows up on the 1699 French Church of New York records as attending a baptism.(1699) as attending a Baptism.

I am looking for information on the surname Duret. They were Left France during St. Bartholomew's Rebellion for England. Our family oral history tells us about three brothers, John, Bartholomew and Richard Duret (Spelling changed to Durrett, Durrette and other varients). We have since found the names Paul Parrin, Francis and William. I would love to know how these men and their families fit in with John, Bartholomew and Richard Durrett. Our hope is that through DNA testing we will find this out.

We have been told that we connect to Louie Duret a physican in King Arthur's Court, but no proof.

We have also started the Durrett DNA project at Family Tree DNA to see how the Durrett's around the world connect. Anyone searching the Durrett Surname is welcome to post their line on our patrirach Page. You do not have to be part of our project to post your Durrett line.

You can go to our website at

http://www.worldfamilies.com/surnames/d/durrett/

A group of us are trying to find where in France our Durrett line is from. When they left England, after St. Bartholomew's Rebellion, and came to the Unitied States of America and owned Wakefield Plantation in Earlysville, Albemarle County, Virginia, USA. John Duret can be found in Spotslyvania County, Virginia USA, Richard Durrett can be found in Albemarle County, VA USA where the Wakefield Plantation is located. Some of Batholomew's children can be found in Hanover County, VA and Carolina County VA and Albemarle County, VA USA.

If anyone knows where in France our Duret line originated from. I would love to hear from you.

Thank you.
Joy Durrett

LANGILLE - Huguenot from Montbeliard area 1750's
Greetings!

I am looking for Daniel LANGILLE in the time period of 1630-1750 from Dampierre-les-Boise, Montbeliard, Doubs who was born abt. 1632.

In some LDS entries, they say he was born in Dampierre; some say Switzerland. I don't know how they came by Switzerland, if so, or where in Switzerland. I have looked at the Swiss GenWeb but don't even know where to begin, or translate.

The only information I can find is that he married an unknown LANGUILLE(S) in Dampierre about 1654 and had three children:
1) Marie
2) Jean-Pierre
3) Daniel II

The son of Daniel II, which would be Daniel III, came to Nova Scotia in 1752, and from whom I am descended. (He sailed from the port of Rotterdam, Holland to Portsmouth, England to Lunenburg, NS, Canada on the ship "The Sally").

The difficulty in tracing the first Daniel LANGILLE's records makes me wonder if they changed their family surname along the way to something no one can recognize, such as being named after a town from they originated. According to Terrence Punch's published articles, one family by this name (LANGILLE) only just appeared in Dampierre in the 1750's. I would like to know where they were before this time period. Could it be they were LANGILLIER and dropped the "ier", or LONGVILLE (maybe from where they originated) and it was misspelled to LANGVILLE or LANGUILLE?? I wish I knew.

I am trying to confirm with records, where Daniel Langille was born, married, lived (other than Dampierre) and died.

Is there a chance that someone out there has a clue or hint for me to research? If indeed they fled to Switzerland, I would not even know what area (i.e. city or town) to begin my quest for this name.

Tony Fuller was kind enough to search the Huguenot Proceedings and the Quarto Series but an overwhelming number of similar names came up and was too much for him to pursue, and for which I'm grateful that he checked.

I would be eternally grateful for any clues to continue my search. Thank you so much in advance! :-)

Best regards,
Lovette Langille
USA

Researching L'ANGEL / LANGILL(E) / LANGELL / LANGVILLE / LANGUILLE(S) / LANGIL(L)IER / LO(A)NGEVILLE

I am looking for any information on the Embry family in France. There are reasons to believe that they were Huguenot. We have Henrie Embrie (also spelled Embry) aboard the ship America coming to Virginia in 1635 via Gravesend, England. This is the time the French Spanish war began. There are the towns of Embry and Embreville in the Pas du Calais (nothern) France. Most Embrys there days appear to be in the south-east of France.

Then we have a reference to Embrys in Wales were some Embry names do show up. I'm thinking that Embrys went with William the Conquerer and were given land in Wales.

All guess work... Can you please help? I've been trying to break this for two years now.
How can i find information on the Huegnots that came to England... I wish to find out if the start of the Vango line came to England as Huegnots (c 1665-Peter Vango and Bartholomew 1702) as many of the ones i have found c1800 were Silk Weavers in Spitalfields London. I have found sites telling me about the Huegnots, but i cant find out the profession of Peter or Bartholomew. I hope this is not a silly question but I have only just started this line of investigation and any help would be great.. Thanks from a novice... Sandra (Vango)

Record of "La Patente" church in London

There is a reference in a family genealogy to a marriage of Jacques Brousse (my ancestor), tanner from Cognac (Saintonge) to Sarra Cornu of Taillebourg (town near Cognac) April 21 1690. I would like to trace the original record to verify it. Jacques eventually migrated via the ship "Mary Ann" to the Huguenot colony at Manakin, Virginia (1700), with his child Pierre, traveling together with Pierre Cornu, who is referred to in Manakin records as "his cosin." It looks like the wife Sarra must have died before 1700 or decided not to travel. Would like to look for London death registrations for her. The marriage record lists Livie Cornu, sister of the bride, as a witness. I found some online records of payments to indigent Huguenots in London (around 1705) which show money being given to a Livie Cornu, seamstress, and her niece Sara Brousse who was 13 years old. There is also a separate record for Sara Brousse. The connection of these two names in several places is hard to ascribe to coincidence but would like to search more systematically. Suggestions? Thanks.

Any knowledge on the level of "integration" of the huguenots around mid 18th century. Can one assume that the 2nd and 3rd generation huguenots in Spitalfields spoke "satisfactory" english? Further, when did marriages outside the huguneot community start to increase significantly?

Good morning List,

I am still looking for information on Julian Mezick. The information I have found on Julian states he may have went to England before coming to America.

I have also, found that Mary E. Voshell b. 13 Aug. 1836, d. 30 Dec. 1906 married my 2X great grandfather Benjamin Darling Burrows b. 26 May 1836, d. 27 Apr. 1887. Mary and Benjamin were married 28 Jan. 1861 in Delaware State and had 9 children here in America.

This is how I was able to trace the Voshell family back to a William Voshell b. abt. 1730 in France. Accord to what I have found is, William was the first Voshell to come to America but the year is unknown. I have not been able to find who William's spouse was but, he did have at lest one son William Voshell "the second". Also the information I found states that, William came directly from France to America.

Any information on either of these two (2) family lines would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time. You may e-mail me direct at wbshort7777@coastalnow.net.

Bill and Rachelle Short
In America

Marie Pirou marriage 1750 with a potential spanish catholic

It seems very likely that the husband of the huguenot Marie Pirou (Spitalfileds) was born in Zarogoza in 1720 (Josep Galindo de Urrea). The old family story is that he escaped from Zarogoza (perhaps with his father) and come to London.

Any views on the likelihood that a catholic spaniard would convert and marry a huguenot in 1750 in London. Alternatively, he was a spanish protestant in the first place - any knowledge about northern spanish protestants and their movements?
