Fischers immigrate Bavaria, Germany to Philadelphia

Hi all! I'm following another line and hope someone out there regognizes one of these people! My grandparents divorced when my father was 4 years old and my grandmother has never told us much. My grandfathers name is Charles Walter Fischer born Philadelphia, 1921. In searching the US census records, I found a listing for a Charles Fischer of the right age, father Frank/Francis, mother Mary, siblings George, Robert and Francis. I've managed to trace these people back to a ggrandmother Adelaide and ggranfather, Conrad. Adelaide and Conrad list Bavaria, Germany as their birthplace, immigration date 1865. I've tried to check the passenger lists but there are so many people with the same name, I became overwhelmed! The census info I have been able to find for this family is as follows:

1870 US census
Conrad b. about 1838 Bavaria
Adelaide b. about 1843 Bavaria
Son, Joseph b. about 1869 Philadelphia
Daughter, Elizabeth b. about 1868 Philadelphia

1880 US census
Conrad b. about 1838 Germany
Adelade b. about 1842 Germany
Son, Joseph b. about 1869 Philadelphia
Daughter, Lizzie b. about 1868 Philadelphia
Daughter, Katie b. about 1874 Philadelphia
Son, George b. about 1876 Philadelphia
Daughter, Lena b. about 1879 Philadelphia

1900 US census
Adelaide b. about 1844 Germany Widowed, year of immigration 1865, Number of years in YS, 35
Son, Joseph b. about 1872 Philadelphia
Son, Frank b. about 1884 Philadelphia

1920 US census
Frank Fischer, b. about 1885 Pennsylvania
Mary Fischer, b. about 1885 Pennsylvania
Son, Robert, b. about 1913 Pennsylvania
Son, Francis b. about 1910 Pennsylvania
Son, George, b. about 1915 Pennsylvania

1930 US census
Frank Fischer, b. about 1884 Pennsylvania
Mary Fischer, b. about 1884 Pennsylvania
Son, Robert, b. about 1913 Pennsylvania
Son, Francis b. about 1910 Pennsylvania
Son, George, b. about 1915 Pennsylvania
Son, Charles, b. about 1923 Pennsylvania

Celia Cohen married Herman Fischer, son Charles W

Hi,I'm trying to trace Celia Cohen,b. 1898? Pennsylvania, married Herman Fischer, b. 1894? Russia, arrived US 1899, hada son Charles W Fisher 1921.I think Celia is my GGrandmother. I sent off to Penn Vital statistics for my Grandfathers birth certificate based on the info on my Dad's birth certificate and what family info I could get. The only birth record for a Charles W Fischer,Philadelphia 1921 they could find was with father, Herman (Russia) and mother, Celia Cohen (Pennsylvania).I found Herman and Celia on the 1920 census, living in Philadelphia with a daughter Evelyn (2years 9months). Herman is listed as born Russia, came to US 1899.Celia is listed as born Penn., mother and father born Russia. I can't find them in 1930. I know my Grandmother took my Dad and Aunt to visit her husband/Charles' family about 1947? They divorced shortly after and we never knew them. Any help would be appreciated!
I have three or four problems that seem not to be solveable which I have worked on for six years. I need your help. I have used up all of my sources.
1.My gmother in law died preceeding her husband, Hyman Hoffman (Oct.30,1943)according to his dc. but nowhere in New York(Manhattan) can I find her death certificate and I cannot find her death date-The health departments (state and city) claimed that they dont have a record of her. I have check NTTDI,NYCDI,,have written to his funeral home, cemetery, to other sources too and I have nothing to go on..Her name is Feige but was known as Fannie,Fanny,Frances Hoffman.
2.my gparents were married for ten years, according to the 1900 Census of Illinois snd their manifest states that they were single. If they were married for ten years, they would have had to gotten married in 1890- They were either married in Ny(I hired a professional and she has come up with nothing also)or Michigan for they had a child in Menominee in 1893. I have check Michigan and they claim that they do not have there record. So what do I do-I am thinking maybe a look up!Their names are Max Weintraub and Rosa Wolf
3.His sister,Ida Hertzberg,is the same in Illinois rather then in NY (number 1) Please help me..
I am trying to locate information on the background of my grandmother, Gertrude Baer (Maiden name), dob 9/4/1892. My mother (who is 81 yrs. now) said she was the nicest person she had ever met in her life but she doesn't know much about her except that she was born around Chicago IL, maybe Waukeegan, IL and settled in Iowa and then California. Since my grandmother has since passed away, I am at a loss. I am trying to do a family tree for my daughter and 4 grandchildren. Does anyone have any information on her? (Most of my family is so disjoined I'm not sure they know who they are.) If the name rings a bell, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Seeking information on Jacob ABRAMS last seen in the 1850 Caldonia VT census. He was living with his brother Manson Abrams. He was born Jan. 3, 1820 in Lengerich, Kreis Tecklenburg, Germany. He was named patronymically "Jacob Abraham". His uncles adopted the names of Lowenberg and Lowenthal. His father adopted the name Lowenstein. Although Jacob and his siblings were using "Lowenstein" just prior to leaving Germany, it appears from the U. S. Census that Jacob and the siblings who came to America in 1846, reverted to Abrahamm or Abrams.
Also seeking info on Jacob's sisters:
Sophie manchen Abraham who married Mr. Wolff (probably in the U.S) and Bertha Abraham who married Mr. Fulda (prob. in the U.S.) Some of the siblings moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Any suggestions, help, etc. will be very much appreciated. Thank you. Please also reply direct.

Family lore says two Blumberg brothers came from Latvia about 1860. Isaac stayed in the East, and Jacob went to the West, finally settling in the Portland, Oregon area.
We have photos of a child in N.Y. named Jankel Hirsch Blumberg.
There was another brother, Israel, and a sister who stayed in Europe and by 1895 had settled in St. Petersburg.
An "uncle" Moses (surname unknown) was also in this country, but we do not know where.
Any leads would be wonderful.
Craig Mayfield

Searching for Bearl family in Pennsylvania

My grandfather died long before I was born and my mother always said he told them that although they were Christian they were of Jewish heritage. Because of my grandfather's death we lost contact with that part of the family and my mother knows nothing of them. Any help finding information on them would be greatly appreciated.

These are the names and dates I have
Harold Earl Bearl 1924-1971
Father- Earl Henry Bearl born 1889
Mother- Cora L Bearl abt 1885-1961

Census records show that they lived in Pennsylvania
I also know that Madalyn Murry O'Hair (born in 1919 as Madalyn Mays) was a cousin (though not a first cousin) of my grandfather but I don't know how exactly as she was long estranged from the family.

I have been to www.jewishgen.org to look this up, but I just got more confused. I am trying to find relatives that came from Novgorod, Russia to New York in 1906. (Altschuler Family) and also the Andert family (immigrated in 1907 and 1909.

I am trying to find the modern day equivalent city, but I still do not understand it. I looked up Novgorod in Russia and the Ukraine and was given so many possiblities that I don't know exactly which city it might be today.

Also - someone told me that Novgorod, Russia is not part of Ukraine. I have done some searches and this is the result:

Ukraine: 9 total cities that start with Novg- 5 of which are Oblast.

Belarus: 2 cities that start with Novg - 0 Oblast

Russia: 24 total cities that start with Novg - 22 of which are Oblast.

Any ideas as to which city, Oblast, etc. I should be looking at for relatives? I am very confused about this. Not to mention Novgorod-Velikii or Novgorod-Siversky! Actually I am totally lost now and do not know which way or what to look at or for anymore.

Any help sure would be appreciated.

Linda In NC

Searching for the Love family from the Bronx and Brooklyn

I am trying to find out what happened to my biological father and his family. His name is/was Jacob Bernard Love (b. abt 1922, in Brooklyn.) I was born December 27, 1946, in San Francisco, and adopted soon after that. I recently obtained my birth father's name by having my original birth certificate unsealed. The only other information I have about my birth father is that he was a naval officer with some college in electrical engineering temporarily stationed in San Francisco in 1946. And that he was probably Jewish. My birth mother is deceased, and although I was recently able to trace her family, I obtained no additional information about my birth father (with whom she lost contact.)

After recently discovering my birth father's name, I have tried a multitude of searches in Ancestry databases. The only plausible lead I have found is a "Jacob B. Love" listed in the 1930 federal census as the son of a Samuel and Jennie Love who lived in the Bronx, not Brooklyn. Jacob B. is within two years of being the right age. There is a younger brother listed, "Elihu." Samuel Love had siblings and grandparents that I was able to trace (they are all Jewish), but the trail ends with the death of two members of the extended family in Florida in 1979 and 1991.

I have hit a brick wall. I am now wondering about other ways to search for members of that particular extended Love family that lived in the Bronx in the 30s. Perhaps there are Jewish databases or archives available outside Ancestry that might have information? Synagogue records? Cemetary records? Military records? Are there search firms that specialize in New York City? I have tried everything in Ancestry. I live in California.

I would appreciate ideas.

David Hettick

davidhet@sbcglobal.net

Modell family Russia to NYC

My husband's great grandfather Morris Modell was born about 1864 in Russia. His wife, Celia Sameth, came from Hungary. I have a copy of the marriage record from New York in 1887 listing William Sameth and Herman Appelbaum as witnesses. His parents are Abraham Modell and (here's where I have trouble) Chaje Irene (or beene?) Dincburg (or Diucburg?) Her parents are Abraham Sameth and Chaje szara Juszpic or Zuszpic (or ?). I have no immigration documentation, but Morris is believed to have worked in Africa in the diamond industry. They had 8 sons: Abraham (died at 2 years), George, Samuel, Henry, Emanuel, Julius, Saul, and (my husband's grandfather) Eugene. I've been told they founded Modell's Sporting Goods in New York city. I'm looking for any links to this family and suggestions on finding their roots.

Wolf was born in Shpola, Ukraine (former Russia or Soviet Union) and moved to the US around 1920.
Would it be possible to find any information about bar-mitzvah services in 1940s? Where should I apply for this information? Are there any old synagogues in Philadelpia that could care this information? Thank you!
I am searching for the Zelman family of Montreal and possibly Ottawa, but I'm looking for one woman in particular, or perhaps a close relative. Her name is/was Freida (unsure of first name spelling) Zelman. She would have been 23 in 1953, so she was born in 1929 or 1930. She had a son she gave up for adoption in 1953, and she was unwed at the time, but she could have married later on and had more children. She was a secretary in Ottawa for a period of time, and she was either born in Montreal or at least lived there. She went to Israel sometime after 1953, but the rest is a lot of unknowns. I would really appreciate any leads or information anyone may have. Feel free to email me at arappel@eastlink.ca

Pearlmans and Rifkins: From Belarus to the Bronx

What we know of our family tree in the Family Tree of the Jewish People at http://www.jewishgen.org.

I am seeking contacts with any possible family of my grandfather, Samuel Pearlman. He was born in 1870 in Minsk. He
came to the USA in 1888. He married Jennie Beck (born in Vilna) in NYC in 1898 and they had three children, Alexander, Minerva, and my mother, Blanche.
Jennie died in 1929.

His mother was Basha (the last name on the death certificate is hard to make out - but it appears to be something like "Mezze").
His father was Feitel Moshe Pearlman. Grandpa Sam lived in the Bronx, where he became a wholesale grocer. He apparently was the oldest child,
his next sibling being Charles Pearlman who married Mary and had three children, Gertrude (Minkoff), Florence, and William.

The other siblings were all RIFKIN, as apparently Bashe remarried Jacob Rifkin (we assume she was widowed) and
they had Lillian (Sukoenig), Henrietta "Yetta" Beck, Matilda "Tillie" (Merblum) and Julius Rifkin.

The only second cousins I know are all from the RIFKIN
line - so could there be others out there? Sure - and
hopefully someday we'll find each other!

FORT SCOTT: OUR JEWISH PAST is an on-going research project focused on the history & genealogy of Fort Scott's Jewish community in the late 1800's and the role of the Jewish merchants in the early development and prosperity of the town.

As a part of FS:OJO, Pine Lawn Jewish Cemetery is being documented to be included in the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR), as well as on FindAGrave.com.

If you have biographical/genealogical information about any one buried in Pine Lawn or about any members of Fort Scott's Jewish community who were buried elsewhere and you would be willing to share it with the FS:OJP project, please contact me.

If you are looking for information on members of Fort Scott's Jewish community (1860 - 1960) or for information found in Pine Lawn records, please don't hesitate to contact me. Please note that several of the people buried in Pine Lawn never lived in Fort Scott; they lived in other Southeast Kansas communities without Jewish cememteries.

Also, please note that information on families who later converted to Christianity is also welcome.

Thank you,
Kate
Jewish Headstones - General Question

Maybe someone of the Jewish faith will answer this for me; it's just a general question of curiosity and not research related.

I often pass a local Jewish cemetery. I have observed smaller stones placed atop the larger headstone. Some headstones have a few and other headstones have the entire top surface covered. These smaller stones are not some dressed/worked formal stone but are the everyday garden variety such as one might pick-up at the beach or on a walk. I see them and wonder why they are there.

Can someone tell me
- The significance of these smaller stones?
- Who places them there...family and friends I suspect?
- What becomes of the smaller stones when the top of the headstone is filled and can hold no more?
- The origins and history of the practice?
- Is this a local practice or a practice of a particular sect of Judaism or is it a general, religionwide practice?
- Are there guidelines for the smaller stones such as size, shape, color, type i.e. quartz vs limestone or some other mineral make-up?

I'm sorry if these questions seem intrusive or dumb but I don't know anyone of the Jewish faith to ask this of and I've always wondered each time I pass by the cemetery and see the smaller stones atop the headstones.

Thanks for listening to & answering my questions.
My step-mother's grandfather was Zelick Rosenbaum. He immigrated from Poland or Russia before 1910 and settled in Denver, Colorado.

According to some family members, he was from Ostrova in Poland. But on the 1910, 1920, 1930 census, he says he was from Russia. I am unfamiliar with Poland, and haven't been able to find a town by that name in Poland on Google maps. However there are several Ostrovas in Russia and an Ostrava in the Czech Republic, near the border with Poland.

Could there have been an Ostrova in Poland that got destroyed during the Wars?

Thanks!

- Heather

hungarian Jewish roots?

Hello all,

I am currently researching the part of my family from Hungary. My family left Hungary in the 1900's and has denied having Roma roots for a long time, despite the facts. I recently learned about Queen Maria of Hungary starting forced assimilation of Roma in the 1800's- she took Roma children away from their families and made them "normal" by sending them to boarding school. I'm wondering if anyone knows more about this and how it affected the Roma community because I also know that there are cultural boundaries about contact with non-Roma people and so I'm wondering if people were assimilated and then not able to return to their communities. So if you know information or resources about this please let me know- I would really appreciate it.
There is also maybe Jewish ancestry, my great grandmother said there was, but there was also secrecy and denial about that. So if other people know of the history of Jews in Hungary, or resources regarding that history please let me know. A friend of mine said that the only other family she heard of having a similar story of denial/conversion was also from Hungary- any info would be helpful.
Also if other people have had the experience of their Roma/Jewish history being denied/hidden I am interested in connecting about our stories.
I'm also wondering if people know these names of my family and recognize them as Roma/Hungarian/Jewish

kövi, losla (also spelled laszlo? I think by mistake), nagy, kiss, jera or jere- (not sure of the spelling), Balint.

thank you so much for whatever help you can offer...

Finn

Synagogues ca. 1880-1900 Manhattan

Can anyone tell me how to find out what synagogues might have been located in or near Ward 22 in Manhattan around 1880-1900? I am trying to ascertain whether my husband's grandfather was Jewish. We have no knowledge of his parents names but think that the family came here from Alsace in 1880. Also, do NYC marriage licenses from that era show where the ceremony took place and do they include the parents' names? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer

I have been working on my family trees off
and on for the last 20 years. It started as
a homework assignment in high school and
served me well in college. Now I work on it
so that my daughter will know her cousins and
any other cousin searching will find out
history. I find that relatives of my mom's
and my generation have no use for our tree.
My daughter's generation is starting to
just as I continue to search.

I am looking for the following families

Belgrodsky/Hartstein/Iskovitz (have 3 generations)
Zussin (have 4 generations)
Winter/Klein (have 3 generations)
Herman (have 6 generations)

Anyone able to keep the trees current as well
as help research the past - please write.

Synagogue records in New Orleans early 1800s?

I am curious about anyone who has access to German/Jewish attendance or membership roles for New Orleans for the early 1800s.

My ancestor Bressentein was a shop keeper in the French Quarter for about two decades (~1830-1850)

Any thoughts on lines of attack? I have found him in census records there.

Thank you, Brian

"First American Jewish Families, 1654-1977" by Malcolm Stern; Lookup request

Hello friends,

I am hoping someone with access to this book could look to see if my ancestor Charles Brezentein, who arrived in New Orleans from Germany before 1838, is listed there. Or perhaps the author gives sources in New Orleans for some of the genealogies. The author intended to cover all Jews who emmigrated to the United States before 1840.

STERN, Malcolm: "First American Jewish Families . . . 1654-1977"; Published in 1978.

My ancestor Charles Brezentein (spelling from 1850 Census) had a shop (pastries? milk?) in the old French Quarter in the 1840s.

An inter-library loan is not really an option for me, as I am working in Seoul, S. Korea with the US Army. And the book is quite expensive to purchase if there were no information for this line of my tree.

Thanks, Brian

Brian Martin
YongSan US Army Base
Seoul, S.
Researching the Bleckman family for my step-grandson's Bar Mitzvah this Saturday. I have found Meyer and Nettie in New Your City with children Wilma and Martin. From New York City Directories 1850-1930, I think that Meyer had a company listed as "Merit Mills r 1346 Grant Ave". How could I find more information about this online? Also, is anyone else out there researching this family? I did a search on this site and found an Issac Bleckman who was searching also but his e:mail in not current. Thank you from a Christian grandmother who is proud of her grandson!!

Felix Grant supposedly was born in Poland Russia and came to the New York area when he was a small child. He went to New Mexico about 1890 and then returned to New York to marry a girl named Sarah in 1890s. He was apparently Jewish and so was Sarah. They moved back to New Mexico right after marriage but I would love any information on this family. I think Felix was probably born around 1863 in Poland Russia and came to US soon after. Sarah was born in New York but her parents also came from Poland Russia. Help please

I am in the process of conserving a cemetery and came across a headstone with the Star of David on it, in a rural cemetery.

The cemetery is Mount Hope cemetery in Mundy Township, Genesee County Michigan. The gentleman's name is Delbert Stickels with a birthdate of approx. 1860 with the death year of 1898.

I have a genealogist working on this and we are both pretty flummoxed about this to be honest. She had pretty much researched all of the people of the Jewish faith in Genesee County at the turn of the century, and I was embarrassed that I missed this after working out there for the last year.

Any input?

Andi

Help w/New York Jewish Furrier

I am trying to help a friend search for her grandfathers parents. I am hoping someone on this board can help me out with the spelling of his last name.
This is what I have on this family. Her grandfathers name was Samuel Rosenknock (spelling?) I know that the spelling of the last name is incorrect.
Samuel was born in New York on 15 Apr 1910. His father was a furrier in New York and Samuel had two older brothers and one younger sister. One of the older brothers was named Bruce and worked as a chef for the Navy. Samuel's mother died in child birth and was born in Hungary and his father was born in Austria.
Story has it that after the death of Samuel's mother, the father had the children in and out of a orphan's home until they went into foster care. After they went into foster care, Samuel changed his name to Robert James Winters.
I have found Robert in the 1930 census where it does confirm where his parents were born.
Hopefully someone can put me on the right track for the spelling of the last name.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Esther

Applebaum-Myers-Davidson Connection in Michigan

I am trying to discover the genealogical link between three Michigan families: Applebaum, Myers and Davidson.
On the Applebaum side there were seven siblings, all the children of Tzvi Asher Epelbaum of Suwalki, Poland, who emigrated from Poland and settled in Michigan from the 1870s to the 1880s. After immigrating, they changed the spelling of the name from Epelbaum to Applebaum. Some originally lived in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, in places such as Au Sable, Tawas, and Hillman (near Alpena). Eventually, all settled in Detroit.
The Applebaum siblings were: Philip S. (1852-1936), Isaac (1854-1928), Phivel (1855-1915), Bayley (1857-1929), Gertrude (1859-1912), Louis (1865-1939), Henry (1870-1915).
On the Myers side, all I know is that Julius Myers married Sarah Rodman and had twelve children. Julius was from Koenigsberg, East Prussia. He and Sarah immigrated to the United States probably in the early 1860s or maybe even earlier. They originally settled in Detroit, but soon moved to Alpena, Michigan, where they remained.
Julius and Sarah had 12 children: Nathaniel, Josephine, Simon, Moses, Rebecca, Isaac, Morris, Rose, Rachel, Annabelle, Louis and Leonard.
The Davidson family consisted of Louis Davidson (1861-1927) and his wife, Sarah Levyn Davidson (died 1934). They came also from East Prussia and arrived in the United States in 1866. They settled in Alpena, Michigan, later in Hillman, Michigan, and still later in Detroit. They had five children: Ralph, Dora, Lena, Jack and Leo.
The families were related by marriage, but I am not sure through whom. I suspect that Philip S. Applebaum might be the main link, but since I don't have specific information, that is only a guess.
Does anyone know how these families were related?
In 1925 in Philadelphia - Jack Schaffer, born in 1903 in Russia, parents Sulem and Bertha (nee Huset) married Yetty/Yetta Aberman, born 1904 in Romania, daughter of Nuham and Anna.-

Jack's address on the marriage cert. was Franklin St and Yetta's was N 6 street.

In the 1930 census Yetta is found to be a widow with a daughter Anna age 1 yr 10 mths. Thus Jack must have died between 1927-30.

What happened to Yetta and Anna? It is thought that Yetta too died in the 1930's but of Anna I have no information.

I cannot find burial places since I do not have death dates.

If anyone has knowledge of the Schaffer family with Jack being part of it, or anyone knows of Anna who could possibly still be alive, pls contact me.

Any information would be so gratefully appreciated.

Thank you

Patricia Wilson.(Israel)

The name has a variety of spellings (Marshalkovitz, Marselkowitz, etc.), but the earliest known in the US is Marshelkowitz. Morris (Moische) Marshelkowitz, Hebrew, born about 1884 in Warszawa, or Liebemuhl, Poland entered the US in 1902. He settled in Chicago, Illinois, married Kate Lieberman and died in 1950. He had a sister in Poland and around the time of WW2, Morris was able to arrange passage for his sister's daughter to come to the US. Her whereabouts are unknown. I would appreciate contact from anyone having information on the ancestry of Morris Marshelkowitz (or any spelling variations).
