I believe my Great GrandMother was Jewish. Her daughter my Grandmother, told her family that her Mother married out of her Religion and her family disowned her. I have her marriage certificate stating that she, Eliza Golding married a Thomas Evans in 1852 St Anne's Limehouse. Apart from that I have no records of her whereabouts until her death in 1881.
Firstly, was her name Jewish and secondly how do I go about tracing her family. I am desperate to find out.
Thank you for taking time to read this message

A. Where would I find english birth records for:

1. a child born somewhere in England around 1903-05 to immigrant parent(s) (possible British mother)Child's name: Harry Yudin; and parents: Morris and Yette (Yetta)?
2. a child (Goldie Freedman) who may have been born somewhere in England (a ship manifest listed her ethnicity as British, but she lived in Ontario, Canada.)

B. Where do I locate naturalization info. about a person (Harry Yudin/Yudien) who emigrated as a child with his Russian parents from England to the US but at some unknown point in time, moved to Canada and married a Canadian woman (Goldie) and probably became a naturalized Canadian citizen?? (He was listed on a ship's manifest--the ship went from NY to Canada--as Ethnicity:Canadian/British)

My grandfather's last name became "Yudin" (meaning Jew) when he entered the US from Sharkovshchina, Vilna (Disna) Russia. (This is present day Sharkowshchyna, Belarus) at the turn of the 20th century. I know the anglicizied version of his and his siblings first names, but that is all. Shipping logs would have his original name, if anything, and nothing appears on draft records or cenus info.HELP!!!!!!!

Great Grandmother Jewish?

I am told by my Grandad that he beleived his mother was Jewish. In fact, i had trouble tracing her in the records until i searched the Jewish history section of this site, but all it tells me is her name and that of her family and that they were from Somerset, England. My Great Grandmother was born Mabel Owens in 1891 actually in Newport Wales, but her parents are indeed from Somerset. Her mothers maiden name was Biddiscombe (Mary Jane) which seems to be a very old Somerset family name and obviously her father was an Owens (John).
I suppose what im asking if anyone has an inkling as to how this family were Jewish, if indeed at all?
Mabel married an Arthur Thomas from Cardiff so i suppose the connection could be there? Certainly my Grandad and no other family i know of are Jewish.

Please help with finding my jewish ancestor R'Avraham Merimon Aka Rabbi Abraham ben Isaac

Could anyone please help my find more information on my jewish ancestor.

I recently learned that a R'Avraham Merimon wrote a book titled Sefer Brit Menuah(in Hebrew). I started to search more and discovered he was a 16-17th centruy rabbi who wrote regarding the kabblah. I learned that his family escaped Jersualem and settled in Spain, in a town called Granada.

I searched information on him and discovered the informaion stated R. Abraham b. Isaac of Granada, Spanish kabbalist, putative author of Berit Menuhah ("The Covenant of Rest"), one of the main works of the Kabbalah.

abraham ben isaac of granada (Avraham Hasefaradi; Merimon)

My other question is, is Merimon a jewish last name?

According to Pere Bonnin, he discoverd catholic records of names given to or used by jews.
Merimon(29)

(29) "Sangre Judia" ("Jewish Blood") by Pere Bonnin. A list of 3,500 names used by Jews, or assigned to Jews by the Holy Office (la Santo Oficio) of Spain. The list is a result of a census of Jewish communities of Spain by the Catholic Church and as found in inquisition records.
According to family lore, my great-grandmother was jewish, but married a catholic and was disowned by the family. Supposedly a church ritual was even performed to 'declare' her dead. Is this something that would have been done in the early 1900s? Her family came to Pittsburgh from Germany in the early 1800s.

I have passenger lists, census reports, death certificates and marriage certificates for my Drash/Drosch line but they all only say that the place of origin/birth was Russia, which I am assuming eventually became Poland. Same for my Friedman/Freedman line. How do I determine exactly where they were from? Thanks.

mtdna research into Jewish Roots?

I wonder if anyone can help here? My Uncle had his Y-dna tested and it came back as a G5 with a large amount of Jewish background, my Uncle was adopted as a child and was once told he was 'just a little Jewish bastard!' a think he remembers to this day and he's now 79 years old.
My mtdna results are now in and give a group of H. I understand that there is no actualy dna group for Jewishness, but with a very sketchey knowledge about my maternal grandmother, it is possible that her background was in fact Jewish.
Are there others who have tested 'H', from their mtdna?

Kind Regards,
Susan

KAPLAN (COPLAN) & ICHKOWSKY Surnames: Kiev > 1891 USA

PERETZ or PEREZ KAPLAN, known as Fritz or Frederick or Fred born 1854 changed his name from KAPLAN to COPLAN. He and his wife Nehama and their two children emigrated in 1891 to America from Kiev. The family settled in St. Louis, MO. The passenger manifest listed the names of the children as Luraline and an infant Moses. However, in the 1900 census Peretz is a widower with two children Lena and Louis. Louis birthdate is 1896. The 1910 census lists Peretz as married and his wife's name is Hannah or Anna and he has a number of children, all known to me. Hannah's maiden name was ICHKOWSKY or ICHKOVSKY or ITZKOWSKY or ITZKOVSKY. Peretz's father was MORDECAI KAPLAN. Peretz died in 1930. His wife Hannah died in 1940. Her father name was AVRAHAM ICHKOWSKY or one of the derivatives. The ICHKOWSKY'S also emigrated from Kiev. The first wife's maiden name was listed as one of the derivatives of ICHKOWSKY.

Please contact me if you are connected to this family or are acquainted with this family or have any information on this family.

Thank you.

Sylvia Jaffe

What makes these records Jewish records?

Hello all,

This may seem like an odd question, but can anyone tell me what makes these records Jewish records? I found a family member (Matt Urick) using this search engine and it has four stars for being relevant to Jewish records, but I don't understand where that qualification is coming from because the census record itself makes no mention of religion. If anyone could explain I would greatly appreciate it!!

WORKOFF (VERKHOVSKY, WARSHAVSKY): Elizavetgrad > 1904 USA

I am searching for my great-grandfather Philip Workoff's siblings and cousins. His European last name was something like Verkhovsky/Warshavsky/Warsofsky.

Philip immigrated to Brooklyn from Elizavetgrad/Odessa/Kherson in 1904 with his wife Anna Resnick (Resnitzky). There children were George/John Wyckoff, Lucy Workoff (married name Schlenoff), and Mynette Workoff (married name Brown).

He had relatives in the Bronx; perhaps someone by the name of Julius. I also know that he was related to Louis Workoff, husband of Ella (Spitzer) Workoff. They had four children: Isador/Irving, Fannie/Frances, Abraham, and Seymour.

Philip also had a sister named Jennie who immigrated to California. I think she may have married a man named Samuel Goldberg, but I am not sure.

He also had another sister who immigrated to Argentina.

Finally, Philip's sister Clara (married name Resnick) lived in Brooklyn near him.

Please contact me if you have any information regarding this family.

My father and I have been researching our family name "Treaster" for over 20 years. We knew that the Treasters came from the Germany area, Hans Martin Treaster. Palentine was one mentioned on cenus records. Dad recently came upon a book, he can't remember the name right now, and found this: Ashkenazic Treister. We know that Treister is a variation of our last name. Ashkenazic was new to me. I researched it and found the information on Wikipedia and various Jewish websites. I know that Wikipedia is not always reliable and was wanting to find more information on this and if anyone new about this particular family in the Austria/Germany area.
Thank you
My great-great grandfather, Isaac Bickstein, from what I have been able to find out was a cigar maker in New York City, immigrated from Spitalfields, England in 1870 (where he was also a cigar maker) and was born in Holland/Amsterdam (abt 1829). From a general perspective I am interested in learning more about the history of Dutch Jewish Cigar Makers, but also could use some help in tracking down Holland/Amsterdam birth records. Bickstein has, as you can imagine, been spelled a multitude of ways - from Bekstean to Bickostein. Thank you for any information, direction and encouragement! I am fairly new at this research, but am have fun and am hooked! Tamara

This is recorded in the Circumcision register of Isaac abd Agraham de Paiba. This record is in the possession of the Spanish and Portugese Jews Congregation of London."
Can anyone tell me where to go for the infomation? Sam and Esther CAPLAN had 4 (?) children named Norman,Woolf,Morris and my Grandmother Annie, born
on 4 August 1906 in Prestwich. In May 1911, at the age of just 27, Esther CAPLAN died in Salford Hospital, due to complications/shock from burns in a fire.
Sam CAPLAN re-married although I do not have the name of his new wife. They had 3(?) children named Rachel,Victoria and Myer. Myer may have emigrated to CANADA with 2(?)sons.
Rachel, believed to be in Manchester, may have had 6(?) children.Annie CAPLAN married Julius'Jud'DIAMOND
(previously DIMENT), November 1929 in Manchester.
Julius'Jud'DIAMOND,the son of Minnie(nee Blackman sister to Dora(Blackman)Burman)and Harris(DIMENT)DIAMOND,was born abt.1900. Julius'Jud'DIAMOND worked as a baker, at Allweis Bakery(?) in Manchester and possibly a bricklayer or other manual work. In 1934,Julius and Annie(CAPLAN)DIAMOND, had one daughter,my mother, Sylvia (nee DIAMOND)now JOSEPH. Annie & Julius separated when Sylvia was young. Julius died in 1951 in Manchester.
Annie(nee CAPLAN) & Sylvia DIAMOND emigrated to Toronto,Ontario in Canada abt.1952. Annie(CAPLAN)DIAMOND
died in 1958 in Toronto. On her headstone, her Hebrew name shows as 'Chanah Bat Shmuel'. If you are familiar with or related to my CAPLAN relatives, I would so gratefully appreciate the information. If you think your ancestor might be on this list, please get in touch.I have about 50 family names - but bear in mind that neither the original census enumerator not myself was familiar with the names, so the transcription may have mistakes.
Liz Davies

Searching descendants Morris, Bessie, Percy, David, Nathan Reibstein; Freida & Philip Slabodsky

I may be distantly related to Bessie Reibstein (nee Slabodsky) and Philip Slabodsky (Bessie's brother). (Please see my post dated 11/06/08 entitled "Searching for Descendants of Seelig Levine" for further details). Bessie, her husband Morris, their children Percy, David, and Nathan, and Bessie's mother, Freida Slabodsky were living in Kings County (Brooklyn) according to the 1910 Census. I, Leslie Glassberg, would be most delighted to hear from any of Bessie or Philip's descendants.

ZIPPERSTEIN/STEIN in US

Hi,
I would appreciate any info the american genners could give me on the following people:
(the addresses I have may be outdated, but these are my best tracks to
find these Tzipershteyn cousins of mine. My grandfather did exchange
some letters with these people, hence from where I got the addresses. I am also including some clues I extracted from mail correspondence between them and my grandfather z"l)

Joseph Zipperstein
1735 Moskeego (? Muskego ?) Ave
Milwaukee 4 wis (?!)

Apparently had 2 daughters and grandchildren that lived
far from Milwaukee. Wife had 2 brothers who lived in
Milwaukee and 1 sister that lived in California. There are no mentions
to names, unfortunately.
Joseph had a store in the food business, at least till the year of
1950, when he supposedly had plans to buy a 4 apartment building for
rent and/or living.

Follows what appears about David Stein:

David Stein
1765 Orange Grove (?) Ave
Los Angeles
(It seems the letter was sent in 1935)

He lived in a somewhat fancy appartment in Los Angeles, California. He
worked in an eggs exportation company. His wife was born in the United
States. The couple had one son and one daughter. Then the letter
states "both were English teachers, in a State School", which is
ambiguous, for I don't know if it refers to the parents or the
children.

Thank you in advance,
Avraham Yehoshua Kahana

I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Myer Spack (Spiewak? not sure if Spack was his given name or changed at Ellis Island) and my great-grandmother, Eva Rubin. Her name was either Rabinowitz or Rabinovitch before Ellis Island. If you view my family tree (Spack Family Tree) you'll see i found some records on Myer, but not a lot--although we did learn quite a bit that's helpful, such as both of his parents were from Bessarabia (Romania) as well, and his birth date and year of immigration.

On the year of immigration part, i know, accroding to 1930 census records, he immigrated in 1904, which would have made him 22. I can't find, however, on any of the passenger lists, someone with that name/birthplace/birthdate that come close to matching.

My great-grandfather Seelig LeVine emigrated to this country from somewhere in Germany (near the border of what would become Poland)in 1880. He settled, and was eventually naturalized, in Kansas City, Missouri in 1892. Seelig's original last name may have been Slabodsky but he took the name of his benefactor, a Mr. Levin or LeVine, when he became a citizen. Seelig was known as "Sol" LeVine or Levin in Kansas City. He was born Dec. 1852 and died in Kansas City in Dec. 1904. He was previously married and divorced in Germany before he came to the US. His two children from his first marriage came looking for him in Kansas City when they were older but he wouldn't see them. These children were reportedly named Phillip and Bessie. Bessie was married to a Morris Reibstein (or possibly Rubinstein) and had a child (male). My grandmother tried to find her half-siblings when she was older, but to no avail. I am trying to continue the search for her. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please contact me. I am Leslie Glassberg.
Dvasewski/Dratewsky/Tasky

I am tracing my son-in-law's family tree. His great-great grandfather's name was told to be Samuel Tasky. I can find Samuel Tasky and family in Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois in the 1920 US Census and in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois in the 1930 Census. I wrote to the Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois Circuit Court and they were nice enough to send me Samuel Tasky's naturalization record. This was fantastic because it contained the birthdates/locations of his wife and children. It also indicated that he changed his name to Samuel Tasky from Shije Dvasewski and that he arrived in the US at the Port of New York aboard the Carmania out of Liverpool, England on September 8, 1911. Based on this I was easily able to locate his passenger record. I also found the UK passenger list when he left Liverpool on August 29, 1911 with his name listed as Shije Dratewski.

According to US census records his wife and family immigrated to the US in 1914. I can't find them and would really like to. Their names are:

Frances Tasky b.April 15, 1906 in Warsaw, Poland
Virginia Tasky b.December 25, 1908 in Warsaw, Poland
Anne Tasky b.February 15, 1911 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Can anyone help me find their passenger list?

Jewish sent to Catholic Boys Home?

My grandfather supposedly went to reform school as a teenager, then joined the U.S. Army. When he died, I found stacks and stacks of receipt cards from a Catholic Boys Home, for donations he had made. He had no known siblings, and I can trace no parents whatsoever, nor entry into this country ( he was supposed to be from Russia) He appears in the 1910 census, listed as a nephew in the home of a wealthy 'Uncle" ( but no descendants from that family have any idea how he was related.....)
Did Jewish people ever adopt Gentile children? If he was a Jewish relative, why was he sent to a Catholic Boys Home?

Abraham de Morais New Spain

The family De Morais were from the first settlers by 1590 in the Nuevo Reino de Vizacaya y Nuevo Reino de León in New Spain, now known as Coahuila, Durango and Nuevo León, Mexican States. Manuel Abraham de Morais was known as a distinguished Rabbi and physician. He left descendants in these regions, before he left to travel to Venice Italy where he died. Their descendants have changed to Morales surname (more Spanish). In Saltillo and Torreón Coahuila, as well in Monterey Nuevo León Mexico, their descendants still conserve this surname. Those identified in these lineage are intellectuals, writers, musicians, physicians and scientists. They have contributed to maintain a kind of Jewish primacy for knowledge, but unfortunately they have lost their cultural and religious links to Judaism. Personally I'm working to have a more clear perspective of this lineage. Any information about Manuel Abraham de Morais' family will be very useful, specially if these data are from Portugal, Spain or Italy, before 1590.

Tracing The Devera Family

I have a genealogical mystery here that is perplexing and puzzling me to no end. I am of 3/4 Italian and 1/4 Czech decent and am in the process of planning my family tree. But it is incomplete because my maternal grandmother who may have been a Slavic Jew his a history surrounding her roots that's sketchy at best and has become difficult to trace.

Her obit lists Boonton, New Jersey as her birthplace and Deverra as her maiden name. But I'm betting the spelling is wrong and it's Devera with one r, since census records list a Devera family that fits the bill. But sometime between 1910 and 1920 my grandma and her two sisters were adopted by another couple without a trace of their birth parents.

Found a pic online of a man who may be my great grandpa, Jacob Devera, who with wife Mary seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth sometime before Devera daughters were adopted. Has anybody got info on Devara family roots from NJ? I'm at my wit's end with this and fear that I may be on the verge of uncovering a family secret.
