SMITH FAMILY

My husband's family lived in Sandusky Co. Ohio, they migrated to northeast Indiana and handed down verbal history has been that the Smiths were part of Joseph Smith's caravan moving west when one of their members fell ill and died, the victim was buried near Clear Lake and the family decided to stay in the area.In the late 1800's a church was purchased from the Coventers by the Smiths and was always called the Saints Church until about 1920 and it was called RLDS. My husband's father was an elder in the church and in doing research on this Smith family I have found that many descendants and related families are members of the LDS today, my question;how can I find if the story of the family ancestors were really part of Joseph Smith's Caravan that was moving west from Ohio
