I am researching the life of Monsignor John
J. Brennan (1886-1964). He was born in
Brooklyn NY to Peter Brennan Ellen Meehan.
He attended St. John's College Seminary
served in the Diocese of Brooklyn for most of
his religious life. His last parish was
Immaculate Heart of Mary (Brooklyn) where he
served as pastor from 1943 until his death.
I would appreciate any stories or tidbits about
Monsignor Brennan and his life as a Roman
Catholic priest.

I graduated from high school at Convent of the Good Shepherd, San Francisco, Calif., in 1960. I always want to be there on Christmas Eve. I would like to go there this year, now that my children are grown and gone, but I heard the convent/school closed in recent years. How can I find out?

Religious Studies

Hello. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could get schooling in the arts of religion. I am a young atheist girl, and money is not an object. Religion has always interested me because of my lack of it. I have been brought up in a strictly atheist home, and I am looking for a new enviroment, and I would welcome anyone who trys to convert me to their religion. Although, right now, all I am asking for is any references anyone would be willing to give. I am not looking for a college or university, but more of convent kind of thing. Thank you for your time.

Use of the word "connection" by religious groups 1800-1850

The may be a rather esoteric question for this group, but... I have a letter written from my great-great grandparents in Missouri to relatives in Bloomington, Indiana in 1840. In the letter there are several references to the "connection" in Indiana where other relatives and friends lived. The word is used as if they are referring to a larger family group, perhaps religious.
Does anyone have any knowledge as to which religious groups might have used this terminology? Quakers, some sects, etc.
I'd appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks

Unusual Prayer

I am trying to discover the origins of 2 prayers that were recorded in 1811 in my family's day book. The family was of English/Dutch descent in the Hudson Valley. They had a history of flitting in & out of Quakerism. They had married in both Presbyterian & Baptist churches. & they had founded a church that they simply called a Christian Church.

One is an odd version of the Lord's Prayer:

haloed be thy name thy
thy Kingdom come
thy will be done
on Earth as it is in Heaven
give us our daly bread

O th that the Lord Would
gide me in the Rite
way that I may prais
him all my days

I believe that these may be exact copies of some earlier book or copybook. The people who maintained the day book were far above this level of spelling & punctuation. They were quite literate & the family had been literate back at least before the mid-1600s when they were associated with early Quakers on Long Island.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

They were in NY as early as 1658 & flitted along the edges of Quakerdom & other separatist, non-conformist groups.

Does anyone know how to find family member who joined religious orders in Canada? This person joined the Sisters of the Good Shepard in Quebec, or the Charity Sisters of the Good Shepard around the Toronto area. I have written to the convents and have not recieved an answer. I have also contacted the Archdiocese of Toronto to find out if they hold the records of the religious community from the mid 1800 with no reply. There must be a central location where these records are held. Any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Kathy

SR. Vincent, Boston? PA?

Sister Vincent is known to our family only by name and visits in the early 1900's. Neice to either Edward Carl Voelker or his wife Flora (Baier) Voelker from Boston (both were from Germany). Pic found with photo studio in Pennsylvania(pic taken before 1928). My father remembers seeing her at the Holy Trinity German Catholic Church in Boston in the late '30's early '40's. May've been a Mother Superior. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Please leave reply, will be notified. God bless

Katherine Miller b July 06, 1860 d. Dec 13,1930 daughter of Joseph Miller Elizabeth Leitterer
This is part of her obit :

Sister Anne had labored among the Chippewa Indian girls of Bayfielf, Wisconsin for thirteen years. They loved her dearly. Her superiorship subtracted nothing from the ever-ready-to-serve-way. The early hour if four o'clock would find her kindling fires in the cold rooms of her Indian charges still slumbering peacefully. She was ever faithful to her post of duty and at the Community excercises.
