I am trying to find two things. First, a Pastor named Alexander Scheierman who preaches in Saratov and a way to contact him. Second, my great grandmother (Katharine Kildau)was baptized, confirmed, and married (Heinrich Hepfner or Hopfner) by a Rev. Keller in the Saratov, Samara area. I have found four Rev. Kellers and am looking for help in trying to find out which ones were seen by my ggm. I believe they were in the Katharinenstadt village.
Thanks for any help provided.
Bethel Lutheran, in Jefferson County, Ohio

I attend the church building that sat on the farm of Adam culp, son of Batzar Culp, in Tunnel Mills, Jefferson County, Ohio. There it was known as Bethel Lutheran. It was removed to Wellsville, Columbiana County, Ohio circa 1909 and renamed Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. Currently it is the Wellsville Church of the Nazarene. It is on 15th st. I would love to have some information on this building. From what I have seen the dates of it are conflicting. Some accounts have it being built in 1850 and others 1872. I know it was the second building, the first being a brick one built in 1830. I am attmpting to put some historical data together as we may be leaving the building for a bigger one. If anyone has any information it would greatly be appreciated.

I have a baptism certificate written in German that was prepared in Malcolm, Lancaster County, Nebraska on September 16, 1899. It is signed by a W. Brakkage, Evangelical Lutheran Pastor. Is this church still in existence, or does anyone know where I could find church records? I believe the child listed on the baptism certificate, Heinrich Ernst EDEN son of Reimer Heinrich EDEN and Anna Maria Caroline PAULSEN died 11 months later and is possibly burried in Malcolm. They also had a son born May 30, 1892 in Omaha, August William EDEN. Looking for any information on this family. The father went by Heinrich EDEN and we are not sure where he died or is buried. Also looking for the 1900 census for Lancaster County.

Does anyone know if the original church records exist anywhere for the Old German Lutheran Church in Waldoboro, Maine which was built in 1792? I am compiling the vital records of the town of Waldoboro and would like very much to include these original records to supplement the apparent lack of early vital records for the town. I would be more than willing to reimburse the expense of photocopying these records.

My gg-father, J. I do know that this part of Hungary is now Slovakia. The only tangible piece of information that I have is my g-mothers Lutheran prayer book, which was published in Budapest.

Lutheran churches serving Chicago's 4th Ward (1870) or 6th Ward (1880)

I am searching for information re a German immigrant family with the surname (Ahrendt, Ahrend, or Arend) who arrived in Chicago sometime between 1864 and 1866. The family appears in the 1870 census, but that census has no street names in the 4th ward. The 1880 census showed them on South Throop street between S 22nd Street and the Chicago River. We have searched the church records of what is now the First Evangelical Church of the Trinity, located at 643 W 31st Street and have found a membership record in 1866, a baptism in 1871, and as witnesses to a baptism in 1876. In the intervening periods they had 5 more children so they must have belonged to another church. Does anyone know what other Lutheran church might have served the 4th/6th Wards? Thanks, Dan

I am looking for information about the Rhea Community and the Lutheran Church that began in about the early or mid 1910-1930s.

There is no longer a church there; nor do I believe there is much of a community also. I'd like to know where the records of this church might have went. Would there be a church, etc around Bovina or Friona, or perhaps Amarillo that would have the records to this church?

My g-grandfather Fred Kamradt was instrumental in the building of this church. He and his family attended the church regularly although they were living in New Mexico some 30 or so miles away. I have copies of the baptismal records of 2 of his sons.

If anyone can shed any light as to where the records might have went when the church closed and/or about the Rhea community, I would be so thankful. Thank you very much in advance. Sue

I am trying to find information on Freidrich "Peter" DITTMAR, wife Katherina Elisabeth PRITZ DITTMAR and daughter Lisette. They immigrated in 1866 after making 1 previous voyage to investigate the new land. Lisette was 2 years old. Peter was born Sept. 6, 1829 in Anspach, Pruessen. He also listed his homeland as Nassau. Katherina was born Apr. 21, 1836. He may have been a Lutheran minister.
His father was Johann Peter Kraus DITTMAR born in 1808 Sossnowka, Russland and I believe he immigrated to America as well. The family first settled in ILLINOIS and traveled and settled with the PRITZ families. From ILLINOIS they went to KANSAS in 1877 where the remained.
I don't really understand why the various names of birth place are used, perhaps the borders changed?
I am at the famed "brick wall" with these people. Can anyone offer any suggestions and websites where I can determine where they would have departed from in Germany, more about his possible Lutheran Pastoral job, info on them in Germany and the 7 children that died in Germany. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Kelly

New book on Separatists (Harmony Society PA and IN, and Zoar Society OH)

During the 18th century many people from the Protestant Territories (particularly from the Duchy of Wuerttemberg) separated from church for religious reasons. They were generally known as ‘Separatists’. After 1800 some of them emigrated to the United States where they founded communities in order to live according to their principles. The most prominent leader, Johann Georg (George) Rapp, established three consecutive communities at Harmony PA (1804), New Harmony IN (1814), and Economy PA (1824). Another Separatist community was founded in 1817 at Zoar OH.

Eberhard Fritz, who wrote a dissertation on Separatism in Wuerttemberg (published in 2003 but no longer available), has now published his Register of Separatists from Wurttemberg and the neighbor territories (e.g. the Imperial cities of Esslingen, Reutlingen and Ulm as well as Baden) at the Genealogical Socitey of Wuerttemberg in Stuttgart. It includes information about over 3,000 persons. The book in in German but there is an introduction in English and a glossyry of the most important terms so it is possible work with it for English-speaking people

You can order the book 'Separatistinnen und Separatisten in Wuerttemberg und in angrenzenden Territorien. Ein biografisches Verzeichnis' directly from the Society.

Verein fuer Familien- und Wappenkunde in Württemberg und Baden e.V.
Postfach 10 54 41
D-70047 Stuttgart
Germany

Email: wappen@wlb-stuttgart.de
In addition to the above he also pastored Augustana Lutheran Church in White Rock, South Dakota and Immanua Lutheran Church in Monson, Minnesota. I believe he was there in the early to mid 1930's. These churches were Swedish, I believe. Are the churches still there and active, and help in contacting them for info. would be appreciated.

Some one is not telling the truth because The locals told me that the camp had already been sold to a local company for big money.
EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH WINNECONNE WI

My gg grandparents were married in 1866 in the Ev. Lutheran Church in Winneconne Wisconsin by Minister Theodore Tachel. Recently found out that church was St. Johns then, and is now St. Pauls.

I have contacted the church, but sadly, they have no records prior to 1885, and are unsure where the records may have gone.

Is anyone out there familiar with this church, and might know where I may be able to find records, or even the Pastor? If not, does anyone know if there is a central location where records may have been sent (I have checked with the ELCA main office, and St. Johns was apparently not affiliated with them)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I am searching for the burial place of my great-grandmother's brother Rev. Winfield Scott Hoskinson. Rev. Hoskinson was born Oct. 3, 1852 in Pa. and died July 28, 1923 at his home in Richmond, CA. Rev. Winfield S. Hoskinson was the minister of the First Lutheran Church in Sacramento for 20 years and was also a chaplain of the California state senate. He was married to Clara Belle McKee who survived him, but I don't know her date of death. Rev. and Mrs. Hoskinson had two unmarried daughters and a son who may be buried in the same cemetery. They are: Rena M. Hoskinson (born circa 1880; died between 1923 & 1941); Ruth L. Hoskinson (Dec. 25, 1882--Oct. 30, 1969); and Carl M. Hoskinson (April 7, 1886--May 25, 1974) who was married to a woman named Alma. I think Rev. Winfield S. Hoskinson was probably buried in Richmond, CA, but I don't know.

I have been trying to research my german grandparents for many years and perhaps someone on here can answer a question for me.

I have written to the church that my grandmother attended in Hartford Connecrticut, and where her daughterr was married, and from where she was buried. I wrote once bck in the 1960's and once more recently. No one ever even acknowledged my letter.

PErhaps someone on here can explain why. (I might add that I always send a self addressed envelope with any query I make.)

This was also the case for the Hartford Sangerbund where my grandfather was a member. They never bothered to answer either.

Any info?

Luthern Congregations - 1881 Dennison; Warsaw Twp; Goodhue Co. Minnesota

My grandfather was born April 14, 1881 near Dennison, MN. His first name was Henry - eventually his surname became ELTON. His family moved to Cass County, North Dakota very soon after he was born eventually settling permanently in McHenry County, ND. He shows on the 1885 Census in ND as Henry Elton (4 years old) born in Minnesota living with his parents Anne and Andrew (aka Anders) Elton. All of these names I am familiar with; it's just what they used prior to ELTON that has me baffled.

I am assuming that if his birth was not recorded with a County, given my family's strong ties to the Luthern church he would have been baptized very soon after birth in one of the congregations close to his birth in Warsaw Twp.

His parents Anne and Anders and four children are shown under the name Oye living with Trond Elton (the father-in-law, I believe) in the 1880 Census for Warsaw Twp, Goodhue Co, MN.

The names that I have for Anne and Anders from another source is:
Anne Trondsdatter Elton
Anders Asbjornsen Broekke

The surname they used on the ships' passenger list when they immigrated in 1877 was Asbjornsen

Hope someone can tell me which Churches would be the best ones to contact in or near Dennison. Thanks!
Mississippi Lutheran Minister (1869)

I have a letter indicating that my ancestor, William T. Youngblood was an ordained (Oct 13, 1869) Lutheran minister in the (then) Evangelical Lutheran Church (eventually merged to become the present day Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). I presume he was part of the (then) Mississippi Synod, a subset of the ELC. I found a listing of a church in Pulaski, near Homewood - "Luther Chapel Lutheran Church" - which was referenced in the letter. That church was organized in 1857, so it has possibilities - if they have records that old and if they weren't destroyed!

Does anyone have an idea of where he may have been ordained? I don't know enough Lutheran church history to know if he had to attend seminary in, say, South Carolina, or if there may have been one closer to MS.

Also, where might ordination papers be?

Thanks for anyone's help and happy hunting!
Joyce Zachman

Kenosha Evening News (Kenosha, WI), Tuesday 23 Feb 1904

HOLD INTERESTING SESSION
Large Crowds Attend the Sessions of Conference at Grace Church.

The services of the Eastern Conference of the English Lutheran Synod of the Northwest are drawing large audiences to the Grace Church today and the meeting, which will close this evening, has been the most interesting and valuable for the ministers ever held by the English Lutheran ministers in this part of the country. At the session Monday evening the Rev. George H. Trabert, President of the Synod, was the speaker, and he gave an interesting history of the work that has been done by the Missionary Society of the Church. Following the address of the President, the Rev. W. K. Frick, pastor of the Church of the Redeemer in Milwaukee, gave a very charming lecture on the subject, “Men and Literature.”

This morning the session of the conference opened with a business meeting at which plans were made for the coming year. After the business meeting the Rev. P. E. Baisler of the Kenosha Church gave a Bible reading.

This afternoon the Rev. G. F. Gehr, of Racine, took up the work of the pastor of the Lutheran Church and spoke especially on the work that was expected from him by his congregation. This was followed by a discussion of the Home Mission Work of the church, led by the Rev. C. A. Anda, Field Secretary of the National Conference of the Lutheran Church.

This evening the conference will close with a social meeting for the children of the church, after which the members of the Kenosha Church will entertain the visiting ministers and many of them will make addresses. The public is cordially invited to attend this service and learn something of the work that is being done by the church.
Seeking descendants of Rev. Christian Streit

I am seeking descendants of Christian Streit. Christian was the son of John Leonard Streit and was born in Somerset County, PA, on June 7, 1749, died in Winchester, VA on March 10, 1812. He was among the first half-dozen native-born Lutheran preachers in America. From 1785 until his death, he served as the first resident pastor of the Lutheran Church in Winchester, VA. He tended to the spiritual needs of people throughout the area and up and down the Shendandoah Valley. He married 3 times and had 16 children, several of whom died in infancy. Rev. Christian Streit was buried inside the Lutheran Church in Winchester. A tombstone erected to his memory is located within the Mt. Hebron Cemetery on land that still belongs to the Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. I would like to connect with persons who can prove their direct-line descendancy to this reknown man. Descendants may contact me at coatesfm@yahoo.com if preferable. Thank you.
Sally Coates

A cousin informed me that the name of the disbanded Lutheran church is Evangelical Salem Church. Page 155 of Wayne County Cemeteries gave the exact location of what has to be the associated cemetery to the Salem church as "Hunter, Section 34, Township 26, Range 4."
At this time, I have not located the church records mentioned in my earlier message. An individual at Our Savior's Lutheran (church formed by combining St. Paul & Redeemer) stated that the records I'm seeking are not there.

Rev. John Nicholas Mensch (1780-1854) Springfield Ch, Bucks Co PA

Rev. John Nicholas or Johann Nicolaus) Mensch (1780/81-1854) likely married to Mariah Smith (1790-1863) was a Lutheran minister of the Springfield Church from 1803 to 1823 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
He was supervised by Rev. Johann Jaeger previously ordainer 2 or 3 years ealier. He was granted a full candidate's license at the request of the congregations at Keller's, Tinicum, Nockamixon and Springfield. In 1806, he had some trouble "on account of his conduct" and was subsequently supervised at his congregation. And since the congregaiton forgave him, the Ministerium also forgave him. In 1807 all was in order again to the satisfaction of both parties. He aploigzed publicly and was forgiven by his congregation. This was then behind him. After that, he was recommended for ordination in 1811 and subsequently ordained on May 27, 1812 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He served five congregations, seemingly successfully, as three congregations came to new buildings during his pastorship.

On account of Ill health he was compelled to give up the ministry and engage in Farming in 1823. I have some info on Rev. Mensch. from various Mensch genealogies. If anyone has more information or anecdotes please contact me.

Rev. Samuel B. How, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1853

On Oct 3 1853, Rev. How married, according to records, John Satler and Catherine Satler. John and Catherine were cousins. John's parents were George and Elizabeth. Catherine's parents were Adam and Mart. I am interested in knowing about the church and church records. What was the full name of Catherine's mother? Where did the two families come from in Germany? Is there a Phillip Satler listed in the church records? Is he from the same place in Germany?
There was also a son born Feb 4 1855 to John and Catherine. Is there an entry in the records of this birth? Does it indicate where John and Catherine were from in Germany?
In advance I thank you for all of your help.

Heinrich (Henry) Hoffman Germany 1849 >Cincinnati OH >Platte Co NE

According to information I have, Heinrich Hoffman was a Lutheran minister. He was born 1804 in Germany and immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio in approximately 1849. I do not know if he was a minister there or not, but would like to pursue that possibility. He eventually migrated to Platte County, Nebraska and is buried at an Evangelical Lutheran cemetery.

Royal Prussian-Pomeranian Church, Persazig Parish - Lutheran?

Can any one tell me if this is a Lutheran Church? Appears to be in Persazig Parish of Poland, Germany, or Prussia. Grt-grandfather E.F. Barz was baptised there in 1862. Baptism was later registered in 1876 by Weltzer, a Lutheran pastor. He was confirmed 1876 in Schochwerder by Hartwich, a pastor. Any information on these places and congregations would be appreciated. Tricia M.
