My great grandmother Catherine (Katrina) Cedar (Zedar) was born a Lutheran in southern Wurttemberg Germany. She talked of bringing sheep to the higher mountains in warm weather. Where might I find the Lutheran headquarters for that area? She came to Americaa in 1851 and went up the Delaware Bay. She settled in New Castle Delaware. She met my great grandfather Sebastian Rhorer there. They were married in 1853 probably in the Lutheran Chruch. Where would I find information about their marriage.

locating a baptismal record for Henry Kopke or Kapke

I have been trying to locate a birth record for my father who was born on May 25, 1888. Although he always thought he was born in Albany New YOrk, I have a City Directory record showing that his father was living in Oneida City Madison County New York at that time of his birth. Birth records for either place have not been fruitful. His mother Dorothea, joined his father (also Henry) in Albany in 1886 from. Altona, Germany and Henry Sr.had immigrated to the US in 1885. He was a cigar maker.

My only resource left would be church records for a Lutheran church in existance at that time. Dorothea particularly was a very devout woman. The last place of family church attendance was in Hartford, Connecticut. They were both also buried from that church (1914 and 1916). However, the church was sold many years ago, and I am at a wall.

I assume when a church closes down, the records are sent to some central location, but I don't know where that would be.

Can anyone guide me as to where to go from here. He was the only member of the family that was born in the US, and I do have the birth record for his sister Catherine in Hamburg. If they can be believed, the 1900 census record confirms that Henry was born in NY, but doesn't give a city, and shows Catherine as born in Germany.

CAn anybody give me any direction.

Dorothea

I know that my ggrandfather was baptized in a Lutheran church in Rummelsburg per family sources and obituaries. However, I am not sure how to go about finding copies of these records. I have looked on familysearch.org but there are no microfilms available in this area. I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you. Joan

Lutheran Emigrant Mission NYC

In the last half of the 1800s and into the 1900s the Lutheran Church (MO synod) ran a lutheran emigrant mission out of Castle Garden. As I understand it, the primary pastor of this mission was a Seymour(?) Keyl. The purpose was to provide a variety of services (including the rites of baptism, marriage, etc.) to newly arrived lutheran immigrants. Does anyone know where the records might be?

I have checked with the LCMS archives in St. Louis and they don't have them saying that the records of rites would have stayed with the church. But the church closed in 1917...

My g-grandfather (Wilhelm Hinnenthal) was a WI synod Lutheran minister in Franklin, WI in 1875. In July of that year his wife-to-be (Caroline Minna Krull) landed in New York and the couple was wed shortly thereafter. However, neither his church in Franklin, nor any of the surrounding churches in the Milwaukee area have any record of the marriage. It is possible that he traveled to meet her and they were married in NYC. Any suggestions?

Lutheran churches serving the 4th ward (1870) and 6th ward (1880)

I am searching for information re a German immigrant family with the surname (Ahrendt, Ahrend, or Arend) who arrived in Chicago sometime between 1864 and 1866. The family appears in the 1870 census, but that census has no street names in the 4th ward. The 1880 census showed them on South Throop street between S 22nd Street and the Chicago River. We have searched the church records of what is now the First Evangelical Church of the Trinity, located at 643 W 31st Street and have found a membership record in 1866, a baptism in 1871, and as witnesses to a baptism in 1876. In the intervening periods they had 5 more children so they must have belonged to another church. Does anyone know what other Lutheran church might have served the 4th/6th Wards? Thanks, Dan

There are several cases where some children would be baptized in a local Lutheran Church while others were baptized in the local Reformed Church. I thought in those days that the Lutherans and the Reformed were not in agreement. Does anyone have any light to shed on this? Thanks.

It has been told that the building originally sat in Bergholz , Ohio and was moved to Wellsville ohio probably in the 1900's. The building is a small wood structure with beautiful stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork. It is now Wellsville Church of the Nazarene. It looks like it may have had a steeple at one time. Any information would be greatly appreciated, everywhere we look we find nothing.

German Lutheran Settlement in Warwick, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

According to "Reminiscences of the Moravian Church at Lititz, Pennsylvania," there was a "German Lutheran settlement" in Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, about 1738. These Lutherans joined with others to build St. James or St. Jacob's Church. This church was used by all nearby denominations. It became Moravian about 1747 and some of the Lutherans then attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster City. I am particularly interested in this "German Lutheran" settlement and cannot find any additional information about it. My Frantz family were part of this settlement. (Ludwig, Jacob, Eva Juliana, Magdalena) Can anyone help me?

Lutheran families- DITTMAR & PRITZ

I am trying to find information on Freidrich "Peter" DITTMAR, wife Katherina Elisabeth PRITZ DITTMAR and daughter Lisette. They immigrated in 1866 after making 1 previous voyage to investigate the new land. Lisette was 2 years old. Peter was born Sept. 6, 1829 in Anspach, Pruessen. He also listed his homeland as Nassau. Katherina was born Apr. 21, 1836. He may have been a Lutheran minister.
His father was Johann Peter Kraus DITTMAR born in 1808 Sossnowka, Russland and I believe he immigrated to America as well. The family first settled in ILLINOIS and traveled and settled with the PRITZ families. From ILLINOIS they went to KANSAS in 1877 where the remained.
I don't really understand why the various names of birth place are used, perhaps the borders changed?
I am at the famed "brick wall" with these people. Can anyone offer any suggestions and websites where I can determine where they would have departed from in Germany, more about his possible Lutheran Pastoral job, info on them in Germany and the 7 children that died in Germany. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Kelly

Many of my Danish ancestors attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Savior, also know as Our Savior's Danish Lutheran Church, in Perth Amboy, NJ. That church no longer exists in Perth Amboy although I have been told that it moved to Edison, NJ. I contacted Our Savior's Lutheran in Edison as to whether they had the records from the Perth Amboy church but no one ever responded. Does anyone know about this Perth Amboy church and where its records may be?

Lutheran Church Information in Montgomery Co, OH & Darke Co OH

The George KESTER family which arrived in Montgomery Co, OH abt1805 were Lutheran. I am hoping to find further information about them in Lutheran publuications and or records. His first wife, Julia Ann (Wolfe) KESTER died in 1817. He married 2nd Elizabeth (unknown) probably in or near Montgomery Co, OH. abt 1820. They moved to Darke Co, OH in 1837, where they both died in 1838. They are buried in the Palestine Cem in Palestine, Darke, OH.
I am especially interested in discovering the surname of Elizabeth (unknown) as she is my husband's 3rd g/gm.

Montgomery Co, OH
"The first religious meetings in German Twp, Montgomery Co, OH were held in the cabins of the settlers.
The pioneer preacher was Jacob ASHLEY, of the Lutheran Church. He came up once a month from Germantown, OH and held services, for which he received a salary of $12. per year.
David MILLER, son of old Jacob MILLER, first minister of the Miami Valley, and Benjamin BOWMAN, came over from Indiana at an early day,and spoke to the people of things eternal and spiritual.
They were ministers of the German Baptist Church.

Darke Co, OH
The first church built in German Twp, Darke Co, OH was known as "St. John's," a Lutheran enterprise, erected in 1826, south of Palestine, Darke, OH on land owned by John KETRING. The old structure was constructed of tree-trunks cut from the forest surrounding, but, in 1868, this was supplanted by a more comfortable and pretentious frame building. The old church was used by the Lutherans alone for many years, and then the German Reformed organization united with them. In 1866, the latter-named society re- organized, and the Lutherans from that date were merged with them. Rev. I. STUCK was the first minister under the new organization."
Please help me translate this German Lutheran baptismal? record

Hi,

I have been searching for a William M. and Amelia Shannon who were the parents of my ancestor Blanche M. Shannon. I had assumed that Amelia was German American, but that her husband was not German because of his surname Shannon. Then I uncovered the attached record at the church they attended. I cannot read German, but I see that the last name is spelled Schanon, and that the mother's name is Emilie not Amelia. Would someone know if the German record writer spelled Shannon as Schanon because he was translating the name into German, or if it might actually be the original spelling of the surname? Later, every other place that I find this name it is spelled Shannon, for example, in census data and city directories. Also, is Emilie a German version of Amelia, or could this be a first or middle name? The record comes from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Its date is 1870. All of the churches' old records are in German. I would also like a general translation of the record. If someone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. I've attached the record below.

Thanks for any help,

Susan E. Davis

I pass the monuments and stones very often when I am in the cemetery to visit my grandson's grave.
The stones read: SCHIMMELPFENNIG
August / Auguste
1846 - 1921 / 1842-1925
Father / Mother

Alvina / Helene
1873-1950 / 1876-1952
Daughter / Daughter

Another grave site reads:
SCHIMMELPFENNIG
George A. / Rose M.
1880-1936 / 1894-1964
I find many researching this name in Pommern research. Would like to locate anyone who was in this home in around 1914 or1915's . I am doing geneology work on the home as my parents were there for about 9 years. Any information would be of value to me.

The G&B has recently obtained the complete baptism, marriage and funeral records through 1930 for St. Luke’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Organized in 1850, the church was originally located at 233 West 42nd Street and is now at 308 West 46th Street. Additional records include Confirmations April 1851 – February 1858; church records (meetings) and history, January 1859 – December 1900; 50th Anniversary (1900) book; 90th Anniversay book (1940).
Although the pages are legible, the condition of most of the books is very poor. As a result, patrons will not be permitted to handle the originals. We have begun photocopying the records and to date have completed two books: Deaths March 1879 – October 1901 and Baptisms 1871-1877. These are the only volumes that may currently be examined and photocopied by patrons.
In the meantime, members and non-members seeking information from the records not yet copied and/or those unable to visit the library can obtain additional information at http://www.nygbs.org/info/searchorder.html

I am seeking descendants of Christian Streit. Christian was the son of John Leonard Streit and was born in Somerset County, PA, on June 7, 1749, died in Winchester, VA on March 10, 1812. He was among the first half-dozen native-born Lutheran preachers in America. From 1785 until his death, he served as the first resident pastor of the Lutheran Church in Winchester, VA. He tended to the spiritual needs of people throughout the area and up and down the Shendandoah Valley. He married 3 times and had 16 children, several of whom died in infancy. Rev. Christian Streit was buried inside the Lutheran Church in Winchester. A tombstone erected to his memory is located within the Mt. Hebron Cemetery on land that still belongs to the Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. I would like to connect with persons who can prove their direct-line descendancy to this reknown man. Descendants may contact me at coatesfm@yahoo.com if preferable. Thank you.
Sally Coates

I am seeking information about Catherine Warner and her step daughter Beulah Warner, who attended this church in the early 1900's. Catherine's funeral was conducted by Rev. Elmer Rice in August, 1924. It is believed Beulah was confirmed in this church. Catherine had 9 children, who presumably attended this church. Beulah married D.R. Neary and lived in Duquesne for many years.

She was confirmed on 15 May 1903 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilnius (Wilna in 1903), which is now the capital of Lithuania. Would my grandmother's parents have been required to fill out a church questionnaire which might possibly supply me with additional info on my grandmother (and her family)? If yes, would these forms be kept where the Confirmation ceremony was conducted or be forwarded to a central storage site (like Moscow or St. Petersburg)?

This church was in existence from 1901-1939. Many of the members went to the Trinity Lutheran Church in El Reno, OK when Immanuel closed. I'm trying to locate the church records. They are not with the Oklahoma District of the LCMS in Owasso or at the Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis, MO. Does anyone know where they are?
