My Grandfather was Fyodr Fyodrich Yudin. To add to the confusion, back in Russia (Armenia) his eldest brother Alexei changed his name to Sokoloff in order to avoid service in the army. When Alexei migrated to America in 1904, some of his family resumed using the family name of Wren or Urane while others retained Sokoloff. When growing up I never could figure out why my Father had first cousins from blood brothers with different names.
My Grandfathers’ other brother Evan followed the lead of his older brother and also adopted the name Sokoloff but remained in Armenia. In 1992 my Father sponsored the migration to Australia of Evan’s 60 year old grandson Eon Evanovich, his wife and 20 year old daughter and in 2002 I helped his 40 year old son and family migrate here.
I've teased them that since their name is Yudin and they have now joined us they should revert back to the original name Yudin. Even though they know the history they will never concede to any angle of my argument even though they know I’m joking.
