The Primitive Baptist LIbrary kindly lists their library as being located in Carthage, but there are two towns named Carthage in Illinois, one in Ogle Co and one in Hancock Co, IL. I would very much like to find someone that visits the library frequently to look up a few names on the computer database they have there. I don't know which county to start with. Can someone fill me in please?

I am looking for any records re Hopewell Church in Fayette County, Alabama. It may no longer be organized.

My g-g-grandfather, Llewellyn/Lewellen Moore Childs was probably named for Elder Lewellen Moore. Elder Moore died the year LM Childs was born (1851), the families lived near each other, and his parents, Thomas and Senoy/Cenann (nee Dean ?) Childs were known Primitive Baptists. (See http://www.childsfamily.com/reunion/wc01/wc01_004.htm).

I have also written a descendant of Elder Moore (see http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7emarylove/Moore/MooreTOC.htm...) to see if she has any information and I have searched the internet for the current church without success (although I have found an inventory of the affiliated cemetery).

Thank you, Lisa

I am new to the list. I have many relatives that have been Primitive Baptists. In fact, several were instrumental in starting the Southwest Texas Association in 1889 (W.S. Dubose, J. L. Dubose, C. L. Dubose, N. C. Dubose, S. E. Dubose, S. D. Dubose, B. I. Dubose, S. A. Dubose, I. B. Dubose). They started several churches...Zion church (June 28, 1854) in Medina County...this church building is still standing and I have pictures of it, Salam Church (August, 24 1872) in Gonzales County, even donated the land for the Good Hope church (Sept. 22, 1877) Gonzales County, Ebenezer Church (April, 26, 1890) in Frio County.

This is basically all I can find, does anybody have any other information on these churches and/or Association concerning DuBose's? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ralph STANLEY, bluegrass musician, Primitive Baptist -- interviewed on NPR radio show Fresh Air

I heard a fascinating interview on NPR yesterday, on the show Fresh Air, with Ralph Stanley, a wonderful bluegrass musician who is a Primitive Baptist. Part of the interview is about the singing in the church, and later on, about the church itself. You may remember the single "Oh, Death" from the soundtrack of "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou," which won lots of Grammies.

The interview can be found here: http://freshair.npr.org/dayFA.cfm?todayDate=archive

The interview date was 16 July 2002, of Ralph Stanley.

I've been searching for a contact or church elder connected to the Salem PBC in Johnston County, NC. The church still exists, and apparently still holds services. The building looks to be well maintained and there is a well maintained cemetery on the grounds. I'd like a contact name and phone or email to talk with about church records. I have reason to believe a number of my ancestors were affiliated with this church.

Any ideas?

Carla Stancil Townsend

Seeking origins of a prayer

My family recorded a version of the Lord's prayer in 1802, however, it may be much older.

The prayer does not close with "Amen" or "So be it", but with "If consistant with Thy will".

Does anyone know if this has ever been used amongst the Baptists?

Primitive Baptist - TN

Am seeking information on a RACHEL/RACHAEL ??? who was born in TN around 1823, married around 1838 to JOHN POPE; migrated to Fayette/Shelby/Montgomery Counties, IL by early 1840's, following most of the POPE family migration to IL. Rachel was Primitive Baptist, and may have been from Carter, Hickman or Gibson Counties, TN. She was widowed in Fayette Co., IL, in 1858; married again in 1860, 3 more children, then died 1877, buried in Old Hurricane/Whitten Cemetery, outside of Old Hurricane Primitive Baptist church in IL. WHO WAS RACHEL??? Census said she could not read nor write. Ring any bells?
thanks!

Primitive Baptists in Georgia: Williams

My husband's ancestral Williams line in Georgia included a number of Primitive Baptists. One was Rev. Ezekiel James Williams (1813-1888)who married Flora McDermid (1814-1879). They are buried in the Salem Church Cemetery, Adel, Cook County, Georgia.

Are the Southern Primitive Baptists the same denomination as those who moved from Virginia to Ohio?

Thanks for any help.

SPITLERS, Primitive Baptists CH<PA?<VA<OH 1700??-

My ancestors were Mennonites. We don't know for sure the first SPITLER that came to this country from Switzerland, but the first we have recorded for sure was JOHN (JOHANNES) SPITLER of Luray, Page County, VA. He died between 1752 and 1753 having had two sons, ABRAHAM and JACOB. I am a direct descendant of JACOB. My maiden name was SPITLER.

In the 1740's during the Great Awakening in the colonies, Baptists came through that part of VA, the Shenandoah Valley, and all the Mennonites living there became Primitive Baptists. Later they moved as a congregation around 1800 (or maybe before) to Fairfield County near Columbus, OH.

All of my ancestors on my father's side of the family were Primitive Baptists so far as we know through my grandparents. To this day, all of them are buried in a small country cemetery near Bloomville, OH, Seneca County.

Some of the SPITLERS and several of the SEITZES who intermarried were preachers. I am hoping this post could shed some more light not only on Primitive Baptists, but perhaps some of the churches or clergy in my own family.

Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS to every one. B-)

Primitive Methodists

My g-grandfather John CLARK who was born at Kilrenny, Fife on 5 Dec 1836, was a founder member and 'preacher' of Addlington Primitive Methodust Church, Lancashire England. Copies of preaching plans that I have seen state he was a popular preacher in great demand. Following the death of his first wife Agness (nee Duncan) in 1885 he married Eliza Ann SCARR, herself a widow, in 1890.
If anyone has information on John / Agness or Eliza or on the Primitive Methodist Church at Addlington, I would be pleased to hear from them.
Kind Regards..Keith Clark in South Australia
