Anyone heard of the name Sant as a first name? Sant Rogers is supposed to be the brother of Reuben Rogers. Reuben was born in 1794 W Virginia so I believe he may be from the same area and around the same birthdate as Reuben. Is Sant a nickname?

Hi,
I have a relative who can remember an Aunt Fanny, in Missouri in the 1940s. But I can find no trace of a Fanny Neely.
In my searching, I'm coming across (US Census Records) first names like John and Charles (Chas). I find that I can somewhat identify Johann's or Joachim's becoming John upon immigration to the US, but what would be some examples of German names that could become Charles (Chas)?

I know they were Greek Catholic and Born in Austria,if that makes a difference? Let me know.. THANKS! Jeniffer from California

Nickname "Kiddo"

For several years I have been trying to find out what happened to a second cousin of mine. His real name was Herman Miller, but he went by the nickname "Kiddo". I never heard him referred to by his real given name. He would have been born sometime between 1910 and 1920. He was one of the youngest of 13 children born to Elias and Ethel (Lavinger) Miller. The family lived in the Detroit area from the 1920's to 1940's. The parents and possibly the oldest children were born in Hungary. After about 1950, some of the children moved away, mainly to California. I don't know what Kiddo's occupation was or whether he ever married or had children. I have lost contact with this family--as far as I know, his 12 siblings are all deceased and I haven't been able to locate the descendants.

I have a relative who shows up in the census of 1820 Wilson county, TN as Milney Cutrell. I have personally seen the census and that is spelled correctly. She is a widow, I am guessing. She is the head of the household. We cannot locate a husband for her because 1810 TN census does not exist, yet we know they lived in TN during this time, and another child was born in 1809/10 in TN.

This name is driving me nuts! I have located it as a surname, but am unsure how she got stuck with it for a given name. Anyway, any thoughts???

I do realize that the name Jessie is a proper name also, but just wondering if I'm missing something after looking everywhere I can think of. For example..I have finally found someone I was looking for called Mary, but they ended up having the name Margaret Mary and some of the census records had her as Margaret, even though her will only had Mary on it. I have that first name listed in a few different sources, so I am confident it is correct.

However, for a couple reasons, I was wondering if this name was related to Oliver at all: perhaps as a nickname?

I have one record that has my Alverson marrying, and another record with the intent to marry with an Oliver. Would the intent to marry be the same person? Or is Oliver a different person? Could Alverson be Oliver'sson?

I am stuck here, and any input would be much appreciated!

On my grgr-grandfather's headstone his first name, Charles, was engraved as "Charl's". There was enough space for his full name so we don't think it was done to save space. He was born 1847 in UK, probably England but I'm not positive.
Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge about this spelling of Charles?
I am trying to find information on William Ephamos HENDERSON born about 1808 in England or Scotland. I was hoping that learning the orgins of the middle name Ephamos would help in my search but I have not be able to find any information on the name Ephamos (Ephamous). I haven't even found another person with a similiar name. Has anyone seen or heard this name before?
Thanks,
R Howe

Mahala (Haley Jane)

Would anyone know why/when the name Mahala became popular?
I would think it may have been from Hawaii, where Mahalo, I believe, is a greeting? I also found that a guy, who's last name was Bishop, from the New England area, went to Hawaii (I think) as a missionery and married the Queen there; or at least that's the general idea of a story I came across, looking for my Great-grandmother's BISHOP line. She showed being born in KY. "Coincidentally"(?) her step-dtr, & the stepdtr's mother, who died just after her birth, both, had the name of Mahala Jane. I have other's who were in the shipping trades; then, KY and VA, early 1800's, or so. Anyone have more on this? I have at least 3 women with that name within the several they were given, two nicknamed "Haley". I thought perhaps it was from some news event from that time period...or maybe these families may have had something, more, in common; since Ms Bishop-Lamb-Pittser's son married a Cornell/Cornwell, who's aunt was also named Mahala. Other names associated with these, in particular, were: Lamb (Quaker/Ky-IN) Ratcliff/Ratliff Va/Ky/Oh/IN) & Sartwell/Sawtell (Vt/Oh/?-Mi/MO & Logue & (perhaps)Tidwell, Goff & Botts. I am trying to figure 2 missing links and think it may have something to do with either religious affiliation and/or practices. Thanks.

When the second son was named (about 18 yrs and 7 children later), the first son of the same name was still alive. Have others in this discussion board ever encountered 2 siblings with the same first name when both were still alive? Thank You.

Any ideas?
I have searched this name, and cannot find anything relating to any other women named Philadelphia.
Does anyone possibly know the origin of this name, and since it is so uncommon, ( or maybe not) why is it so difficult to find in researching?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

In the early 1800s this name was very common. Was it popular because it was the name of a Revolutionary War hero? A politician? Someone else famous? It seems to appear in many families at that time, though it may have been around for some time.

Early use of "Rhobe" as a first name....1700's to early 1800's New England

Trying to find the orgin of the name "Rhobe". I have seen it used several times as a first name in families from the New England area such as Mass & Rhode Island. I was wondering where it came from. It seems to show up in Quaker families and appears to be mainly used as a females name. I have also seen it spelled, Robe, Roba, Rhobee.

I know there is a surname spelled Roby, Robey, Robie, from England. The first Roby surname came over to America in 1638.

I'm just not sure where this first name came from or is it a variation of the spelling of the surname Roby moved forward.

If anyone has any ideas on this please email me at:

roby@erols.com

I'm not sure of the spelling. Maiden name, Ocie/Osie McCollum, married Clint Barnhouse probably middle 1900's. Lived in Montana for a spell, lived in Post Falls, Idaho. I know for sure they were in P.F. 1958-1960. And they lived there prior to 1958 they were there when I moved there. I don't remember all their kids names, there was Joyce Ann b approx. 1938-1940, Audrey, who was older than Joyce, Earl, unknown bd, Henry/Hank, b 1945-1928, Dennis/Denny b approx 1946-1950.
I know there were 3 McCollum siblings married 3 Barnhouse siblings,
Clint Barnhouse/Osie McCollum,
Kate Barnhouse/Luther McCollum, Unsure of other 2's names, I know there was a Wayne Barnhouse in Seattle during the1960's who was born to those 2. He was probably the same age range as Hank Barnhouse....give or take a few years.
Hope this isn't too lengthy, I'm trying to get information for my kids' family tree. It seemed like a good idea to go for an unusual 1st name, since I don't know where they came from originally.
Thanks for any help, I'm open to suggestions.
KMCC

It would not be uncommon to find the same names in marriages many years apart. Also they always did not use the same first names every time either. Many females were Marie something or other and have often found the Marie dropped after marriage. Why, who knows. So she may show up as say Angeline or another middle name. My wife had two marriages in the same time period with names very close. Between them they had 23 kids. Drove her nuts as the names listed for childrens parents kept showing up with various first names for the parents. sometimes they gave the first name, often the middle name.

I have noticed in my research that girls named Mary were more often that not called Polly in the 1800's. This happened to my great grandmother who happened to dislike her name Polly. The ironic part is that her real name was Mary. Does anyone know how this pratice got started?
