I would like to start a list of official sites where any state in the United States, or county or city in the United States that has a site with a search engine that lists deaths or marriage dates,

example: Missouri Death Certificate site at:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#...

another example: Cook County Illinois Clerk site:
http://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/SignIn.aspx

Any official site you would care to list from anywhere in the United States would be appreciated. I had asked that Ancestry post a board especially where this kind of information could be posted, but it was rejected.

Migration & Google Earth

This is an announcement for Genealogists/Family Historians and any other interested folks.

For anyone that might be interested I am working on a project dealing with migration. Initially, this project involves Early PA Migration and Google Earth. But, this can appply to any state, or country for that matter. For example: I mark all the counties of PA, and link them to the respective PA-Roots research project page(s) to facilitate an immediate link for additional research. I also overlay an early map of Philadelphia as well as the entire state, and am targeting old PA Forts as well as American Indian villages. Furthermore, I am laying out the migration paths/trails westward through PA.

I've recently started a Blog which primary purpose is using, or showing you how Google Earth can enhance Genealogy. Its "how to" approach is for those that have never used Google Earth. Although, I do make suggestions on enhancing a family history tour and adding it to your existing or in-progress Family History book/CD.

If you haven't seen Google Earth your in for a huge surprise in how current technology can support our respective families histories. I really believe that Google Earth can have a significant impact in the way we share this important part of our history with our descendants.

To this point I am honored that my Blog is listed on Cyndi's List: http://www.cyndislist.com and mentioned by sites, such as; Google Earth Blog> http://www.gearthblog.com/ Random Genealogy> http://randomgenealogy.com and others.

I'm trying to get my Blog off the ground, and would be very interested in anyone's feedback on it, the way I approach the "how to's" of Google Earth, etc., etc...

Please let me know what you think, see my blog: StudentsOfDescent at http://apoetsblues.typepad.com/studentsofdescent

Thanks,

Gary,
Ancestry Board Admin,
For the Hofheins, Hofheintz, Huffhines, Huffine & Huffines surnames.

I am a regular visitor to the Strathclyde Genealogy Centre at Park Circus, Glasgow. I have recently heard from fellow researchers about a similar facility opening up in Kilmarnock shortly.
Can anybody confirm this rumour, and is there any further details available.
I live in Troon, so Kilmarnock would be more convenient providing it has the network link to Registry House in Edinburgh.

Best Regards
Tom

I have 18 videos up right now all of which are dedicated to genealogy.
I have videos about organizing, sourcing documents, videos on beginning your research, and a brand new series on the U.S Federal Census.
I have been featured on Robert Reagan's blogs and on various other genealogy blogs.
Go ahead and check them out at: www.youtube.com/elyse90505

I also have a blog that I just created to kind of go along with the videos. It serves as a compliment to it: http://elysesgenes.blogspot.com

The only way we can try to keep genealogy as free as possible is to pull all our sources together and have them accessible in one place and that place would be Ancestor Hunters.
There are to many places making a lot of money off of us for our own families information.

Come join us in finding ancestor information and giving help to others on their genealogy search.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ancestorhunters/

or

ancestorhunters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Before we opened it to members we put a lot of work into it.
There are State Folders and Folders that pertain to particular subjects.

In the File Section there is a list of States under each State there is a County folder and in these folders is where you can add things about that County such as obituaries.

We have a database of lookup volunteers and a surname database.

Our goal is to bring fellow genealogy searchers together and help each other break down our brick walls and to add to the folders so we have a collection of documents and information and links that will help keep genealogy as free as possible for everyone.

We just opened to members on March 9th 2008 and we have 431 members and are growing fast.
Come join us, let us try to help.

You can find us at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ancestorhunters/

Hope to see you there, in no way is it to replace this group.
It will just exspand your research ability.

Thank You
TammyMay and Sue
The Family Records Centre is to close after 15th March 2008.

I haven't seen any notices about this so thought I'd post it.

6 March 2008

Family historians outside London will have easier access to indexes of records such as birth, marriage and death registrations, under new plans announced by the General Register Office.

Under these plans, full microfiche indexes of registration records dating back as far as 1837 would be available at libraries in Birmingham, Bridgend, and Plymouth, as well as Manchester Record Office from April this year.

This would be the first time that the full microfiche indexes, which also include details of civil partnerships and adoptions, have been available to consult at locations outside the capital.

Welcoming the plans, Registrar General Karen Dunnell said: “Family history has become immensely popular in recent years and I’m delighted that many researchers should now be able to consult the indices they need more easily. These proposals would be a real improvement for many people interested in their family history but who can’t easily get to London.”

The microfiche indexes are a vital tool for family historians, as they help them identify the key events in their family’s history. Having done that, they can then order copies of the certificates they are interested in. Last year, some 2.1 million certificates were ordered, up 800,000 on the number issued five years ago.

Plans to extend the microfiche scheme to libraries at other locations in the UK may also be considered by the General Register Office. Indexes are also available to consult at The National Archives in Kew, and these will remain after the closure this month of the other London location where they can at present be consulted, the Family Records Centre (FRC) in Islington. The FRC will close after 15 March 2008. It is also hoped to arrange for the material to be available in at least one central London location.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/news/index-searches-new-ar...

Hello,

As the webmaster of TOWPATHERS.com [ http://www.towpathers.com ],
I would like to extend a special offer to construct a free webpage
for any Senior Citizen who might like to share their historic
Erie Canal information on the Internet, but may not have
the capabilities to do so.

My name is Cliff Williams, and you can see an example of what I mean
by visiting my website and checking out the webpage I built for a
Mr. Thomas Doganieri. He grew up in Ft. Plain, NY and was delighted
to share his wonderful old photos of Lock-32 and finally get them on
the Internet for other interested visitors to see.

I hope that you will seriously consider allowing me the honor
to do the same for you. Your page will be of similar design, and
can contain a little or allot of information.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Respectfully,
Cliff Williams - Rochester, NY

New genealogical blog

I'd like to invite you all to stop by and look at my new genealogy blog. My main purpose is to try to puzzle out problems and get past brick walls, but I have many other ideas for it, such as postiing photos, creating and posting maps tracing families from one place to an other, putting up family group information, posting interesting bits of information. I hope it will be helpful to some of the people who read it, and maybe I'll find some cousins or break down one of those brick walls. The topic will not always be related to Breckinridge Co., as I have more than 75 surnames and will probably be jumping back and forth, but I'll be sure to tag all my posts so you can find things that relate to your research.

It's a bit skimpy right now, but bear with me and keep reading--and please feel free to leave comments!

Judi Hardin
http://genealogicalswamp.blogspot.com

Yes it is free and SMGF is very reputable!
> The test is for minimal number of markers to identify your haplogroup.
> The test results may take months after you submit the sample.
> SMGF does not provide any tools to compare results or means to communicate with others who have similar results.

SMGF is a leading DNA test lab which is gathering DNA samples for research! If you really want to obtain your DNA results and be able to look for others with similar results you probably want to use one of contract test labs.

Free DNA-Based Genealogy Web site Reaches Milestone of 2.5 Million Records

Non-Profit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation Promotes World Peace and Understanding by Proving Scientifically How Closely Related Each Human Being is to Every Other. Public Web site Offers Expanded Database and Upgraded Research Tools for the Three-Quarters of Americans Who Say They are Interested in Learning About Their Family History.

SALT LAKE CITY (September 6, 2005)—Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF), a non-profit research organization building the world's most comprehensive database linking human genetic and genealogical information, today announced that it has expanded to 2.5 million records of DNA-family history data and has developed powerful new search tools for visitors to its free, interactive Web site.

Interest in family history research is booming, and today much of it takes place on the Internet. Molecular genealogy, a relatively new science, is transforming the popular hobby because it solidly links individuals to their ancestors using genetic profiles. This method of ancestry investigation eliminates the guesswork and dead-ends caused by surname changes and missing historical records. Today, a visitor to the SMGF Web site (www.smgf.org), can enter the numerical values from their own DNA profile into the database's drop-down menus and search for likely ancestors. Their personal DNA profile is obtained by an inexpensive cheek-swab genetic test offered directly by many laboratories and through genealogy services.

The foundation's goal of genetically mapping humanity's entire family tree in a free database has an idealistic and visionary purpose. "I believe that if people know how closely related we all are, then we will treat each other better," said James LeVoy Sorenson, who came up with the idea. One of the 60 richest people in America, Sorenson is a medical device entrepreneur whose success allowed him to turn his attention to making the world a better place to live.

The project is a multi-cultural, multi-racial and ecumenical endeavor that collaborates internationally with diverse universities on a database that includes genetic-genealogy information from around the globe. "In the past three months alone, we've added the genetic records and pedigree's of thousands of individuals in Asia and Africa," said Dr. Scott Woodward, who heads the foundation and is one of the world's leading researchers in molecular genealogy. Woodward is renown for helping to identify the gene markers that led to the discovery of the cystic fibrosis, colon cancer and neurofibromatosis genes.

The SMGF database establishes family links among individuals, families, tribes and populations using information encoded in DNA. "Our project is the only one that links living individuals by DNA to specific names of ancestors going back six or eight generations or further," said Woodward. "The foundation has a different purpose than the recently announced Genographic Project of National Geographic. Our database links an individual's genetic profile to specific ancestors by name, while the Genographic Project links a living individual to locations and broad human migration trends over tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of years."

Visitors researching their family tree on the SMGF interactive Web site can now query a database of 13,489 individual genetic profiles, or genotypes. These Y-chromosome genetic profiles are linked to more than 550,000 individual ancestors representing over 9,400 paternal-line surnames. Foundation records total 2.5 million, but currently only Y-chromosome, or paternal ancestry, searches are available. However, the foundation is working to overcome current research limitations on genetic-genealogy by profiling the DNA markers on mitochondria for maternal ancestry and on autosomes, making this database the only one of its kind in the world to do so.

With this Web site upgrade, the foundation developed a powerful new analysis tool that allows an individual genetic profile to be compared to the entire Y-chromosome database, showing genetic similarity by country back through time. This tool presents a graph of most likely paternal-line membership back to the 1500s, as well as the location and surname of the specific ancestors. Increased functionality also comes from a new "search-by-surname" feature. In addition, improved lineage linking has dramatically extended the number of ancestors available on most pedigrees.

America is a nation of immigrants and tracing family trees is now a national pastime. In a recent 2005 survey, three-quarters U.S. adults reported they are interested in learning more about their family history, and more than one-in-three U.S. Internet households already have used the Web to research their family history. The study was published by Market Strategies, Inc., a national research and strategic consulting firm, and MyFamily.com.

About Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation:
Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is a non-profit research organization with the mission: To collect DNA samples within a genealogical context for creating the world's most comprehensive correlated genetic and genealogical database. To provide the funding necessary to construct genetic tools from the information contained within the database for the purpose of family history research. And, to maintain the integrity of the database content and to ensure it is used for purposes that will promote peace, compassion and fellowship among humankind.
SC Cemetery Mapping Project - NEW

Having you been searching for a soldier's grave that the DAR marked a hundred years ago, but can't locate the cemetery? The new website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/southcarolina/sc-graves/sc... should be of help, if, you have the cemetery's general location or name. Once the cemetery has been identified, Google Maps will actually provide you with a hard-copy map.

These published GPS values have been permanently preserved in the GenWeb Archives and will allow researchers a thousand years from now, to be able to accurately locate a mapped cemetery.

If you would find this info to be of value when marking a soldier's grave, please feel free to use any of it as you see fit.

To promote contact and exchange between the Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) and Canada’s historical and genealogical societies, the PRDH team would like to bring to your attention two historical census databases which will undoubtedly be of great interest to your members. These databases offer a wide range of information on Canadian society during the second half of the 19th century and will serve as useful tools for conducting both historical and genealogical research.

The PRDH is currently making available two free databases of the Canadian censuses of 1852 and 1881. Our website offers, amongst other resources:

Ø A data browser which allows users to search for specific individuals by name within the 1881 database;

Ø An array of data browser research options which allow users to examine specific groups of Canadians by profession or geographical location, for example;

Ø The opportunity to download the entire 1881 Canadian census database , which includes 4.3 million individuals (SPSS or ACCESS files);

Ø The opportunity to download a 20% sample of the rural population of Upper and Lower Canada drawn from the 1852 Canadian census, a database which includes more than 259 000 people (SPSS or ACCESS files).

http://www.prdh.umontreal.ca/1881/en/1881.html
_________________

Check out the website http://www.odessa3.org/collections.html

They have an extensive free collection of German-Russian Genealogy. Birth/Marriage/Death records. It is mainly focusing on those that immigrated to the dakota territories but there are many others listed there as well.

Happy hunting...
The genealogical database - "Lolland-Falsters Slægtsdatabase" - was founded by Tom Stryhn in 2002 as a part of my interest in both local history and my own family's history, and became a private non-discriminatory, non-political, non-racial, non-religious, non-commercial and free service, solely owned, financed and operated by me in 2002. The web domains of www.tom-stryhn.com are registered and owned by me, while the web hotel space is rented at Servage by me. The goal of this database is to find family relations between the people of Lolland and Falster, including the islands, and the connection of people to other places in Denmark, mainly Fyn, Langeland, Ærø, Strynø and Drejø. Connections are also drawn to people who emigrated from Lolland and Falster to other countries such as North America, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. Feel free to e@mail me, should you have questions about, or additions to, the database. For living individuals - for reasons of confidentiality and privacy - this website does not contain dates of birth and any other personal information of individuals born after 1957 , unless they are known to be deceased. To use the genealogical database, you must be a registered user (registration is free!). - Go ahead and make your own discoveries on www.tom-stryhn.com

I'm building a free web site and am posting my hundreds of old maps on it. Many of the maps show property owner's names and have local business directories on them. It's a slow process, but here's what I have so far. I hope some people can get some use from it:

http://menotomymaps.com/

I found a really cool site that you can put an address in any where in the world and it will show you the location. You can choose from an aerial view, road view or both. It will even give you an aerial view of "driving directions" I looked up the street address that my GG grandfather was born in 1914, I do know that things do not look the same! But it will give you the general idea. I looked up many places and found them all. You can see where the mountains and streams are. You can use the wheel on your mouse as a zoom tool. If you sigh up (free) you can save your locations, under whatever you choose, I choose to put each town under the family surname that came from there. I printed maps to add to my ancestor notebook. Of all the map web site locations out there I think this one is the easiest to use.
Terri

Here is the address:

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=&FORM=BW
Website tracks ancestors' journeys to NZ.

NZ Herald 10 January 2006 - New Zealand family-tree fanatics whose ancestors emigrated from Britain by ship are able to look up their relatives' life-changing journeys on the internet from today.

Details of some 30 million passengers who sailed out of Britain between 1890 and 1960 to destinations like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, North America and India are being made available online at the www.ancestorsonboard.com website.

The 1.5 million pages of passenger lists were previously only available at The National Archives in Kew, London.

The move should spark interest among family tree researchers, who are growing in number thanks to a series of historical archives being opened to the public in the internet.

In particular, the database holds records from the period of mass emigration before the First World War.

An estimated 125,000 British people emigrated to the United States, 50,000 to Canada and 25,000 to Australia every year between 1890 and 1914.

"The availability of the passenger lists from ships that left British ports in this period is an invaluable tool for people tracing relatives they believe may have left the UK during this period," said Elaine Collins, commercial director of family history website findmypast.com which developed the database.

"The passenger records may well provide a missing link for many genealogists who have hit a brick wall in their research, as well as helping those outside of the UK to trace back to their British heritage."

The 1890 to 1900 records go online from today, with the subsequent decades to follow over the next six months.

Images of the passenger lists will be available to view, download, save and print.

As well as the names, departure dates and destinations of each passenger, the records may also include their address, age, marital status and occupation.

"We hope that digitisation will open up a hugely valuable resource for genealogists and social historians all over the world," said Dan Jones, head of business development at The National Archives.

"The archives in Kew are stored chronologically and there are 1.5 million records to plough through. If you weren't sure of the year it made it difficult to find people," a findmypast.com spokeswoman said.

"Online you can easily search for example by name or ship."

The passenger lists could shed new light on social trends.

"There are war brides and babies from the First World War, soldiers who returned to Canada with English and Scottish wives," the spokeswoman said.

The records also show British playwright Noel Coward travelling to New York -- not to mention the passenger list of the ill-fated Titanic, which sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912.

- AFP

The First Fleet Discussion List Homepage

Hi Friends,

I'm pleased to announce The First Fleet Discussion List.

http://www.feliixplace.com/genealogylists/firstfleet.html

From the description at the list home page:

---

A mailing list for anyone who has an interest in genealogy or history regarding ancestors who came to New England on the First Fleet, their lives, the reasons they came here, their ancestors and descendants wherever they may be, as well as those who married into these families. The First Fleet includes that group of ships known as The Winthrop Fleet including the ships: the Arbella, the Ambrose, the Jewel, the Talbot, the Charles, the Mayflower (not the Pilgrims' Mayflower), the William and Francis, the Hopewell, the Whale, the Success, and the Trial. Also included are certain other early ships that became part of "The Great Migration".

There are many mailing lists focusing on the individual surnames of many of these people but this list brings them together so we can study them as a group, as family units, and as individuals.

Feel free to create a database to share your information; use the files area to upload your gedcom or other genealogical or historical document; use the photos area to display your ancestors connected with these lines or artwork relating to early colonial New England; and the links area to promote your favorite websites.

---

I'm very excited about the future of the First Fleet list and I expect it will be a great success.

Go to http://www.feliixplace.com/genealogylists/firstfleet.html for sign up information.

Regards,
David

I'm also going to use it to host found family photos I'm trying to return to family members. the site is http://home.earthlink.net/~walk_wild777/genealogyphotos/

Right the only "found" photos I've found, are the ones I recently posted about here.

The French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan announces the establishment of an e-mail list for its members and guests.
