Life of Thomas McCarney 1843-1875 born in Minnesota

Did Thomas McCarney ever own land in Kansas? His family lived in Sycamore, Montgomery,Kansas. His widow, Maria C.Black, and her children lived in the LeHunt area in
Montgomery Co, Kansas. I believe she was married to Benjamin A. Murphy from Illinois who moved to Kansas, Coffey County in 1865.

Starting Land and Tax Research

I have been conducting family research for many years but I have not used land and tax records. What is the best place to start when conducting this type of research? Are there any quick resources that I should read? Most of my research will be in Indiana.

What is "Divers Deed"

Does anyone know what a "Divers Deed" is? From the PA Archives of 1765, "Thomas Stewart was denied a patent on 100 acres as another laid claim to it by divers deed, part of a 200 acre tract in Cumberland Co." In 1748 his father drafted a will, proved 1750, for this 200 acres to be split evenly with his sons when they came of age.

My female ancestor (I believe), Alley Miles purchased federal land in Alabama in 1831 as a cash sale. She purchased it with a John Miles. The certificate specified that she bought it with John Miles, as "tenants in common, and not as joint tenants".

Does this indicate that John Miles was not her husband?(Her husband and her son were both named John Miles. I do not know the date of death for either.)

Thank you for any insight. Annette O'Brien aobrien1@swbell.net

Reading Land Records

Help! I recently learned about the BLM site and have found land patents for two generations of ancestors. Have requested the file from NARA. One of records I found appears to be my 2great-grandfather but his first name and middle name are inverted. Would help to narrow it down if I could figure out the location of the township. I have no idea how to go about it and would appreciate any advice/suggestions. The land is Arkansas and BLM record is as follows: NWNE 14/ 17-N 11-W No 5thPM AR Izard. So the township number is 17-N. I don't need an exact location at all just a general idea of what community this township number would apply to.

Hi! I'm an Iowa researcher and so have been rather amused to see the 2005 timeframe for the BLM putting Iowa pre-1908 patents online come and go. I'm fascinated to know why Iowa seems to be giving them so much trouble. Does anyone know? Is it just coincidence? It just seems to odd that they got all the others up, and then said "Iowa's coming next" and... that's where it's been for three years. I'm just really curious.

Thanks!

Understanding deed terminology

I'm trying to figure out what the following sentence in a land deep means:
"That for and in consideration of the sum of Five Dollars ($5.00) and upwards, all fully paid by the said party of the second part......"

My issue is the "and upwards". This was the deed for the sale of my great-grandfather's dairy farm (186 acres) after his death in 1949.. The land was originally purchased for $3500 in 1909. Can anyone shed any light on why the dee may have been written this way?

Unknown symbol in a legal land description 1879

The symbol looks something like a lower case 'o' followed by a large but subscript V followed by a 'c' (sorry, I just don't know how to describe it.) It is in script so each (o,V,c) is connected and flows into the next.

The symbol appears in the context of phrases such as: "parcels of land to wit the north half of the northwest [symbol] of the north west [symbol] of section two..."

I would guess that it refers to a division of land or a division of a section. Section, township, range, rod, acre, and lot are written in full, so presumably the symbol does not refer to those words.

Help!
Are inherited deeds recorded as deed transactions?

In trying to use deeds to identify past family members who may have passed on land to children, I finding that the General Indices of Deeds for both Grantors and Grantees list the children later disposing of land, but never having the deed tranfered to them to start with. So how are deed transfers through inheritance recorded?

Instance: Jonathan Martin sells Halifax Co., VA, land in 1815. The deed says the land was his portion of property that had belonged to John Martin (deceased), but the General Index of Halifax Grantors never lists a John Martin getting or passing on a deed to the property. And nowhere is Jonathan Martin listed as a Grantee.

Instance: In 1845 William Franklin Draper marries in Henry Co., VA at the age of 21. While there are several Draper families in the area, none seem to be his parents. By 1851 William is Grantor for several pieces of property, but nowhere was he ever sold or transferred land by anyone.

Is there another process to consider? Does this mean they were both granted the land from, or at least the transfer was recorded in, a different county or state? What are my other possibilities?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bill Draper
Atlanta
LAND SALE & DOWER RIGHTS QUESTION

I have a Land Agreement dated 1801, between 2 men, in which the men want to basically "swap" land. In this record in states that if the Agreement takes place the wife must sign off her Dower Rights.
I also have a actual Land Sale for one of the men. Selling a different parcel of land, dated 1804. On this one however there is no mention of his wife's Dower Rights. Why is that? I don't understand why it would be mentioned in the 1801 Agreement, which was only an agreement, but in an actual Land Sale there is no mention of the wife or her Dower Rights.
Can anyone help me to understand this?
Thank you in advance,
Lisa

In researching land patents is says they did not have to pay taxes on the land, and it could only be transferred to heirs...my question is, am I missing something? Is there any claim I can aqcuire on the land? Does the BLM hold the property in trust?
Is this land still within my family???
Hi! I have a rather odd question. I have found my ancestor on the 1850 Census and even know what precinct he lived in, but my question is how can I find out just exactly where a precinct is? Is there any way of knowing EXACTLY where my ancestor lived?

Also, my ancestor is listed as being born in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1805, but Harlan County wasn't even founded until a bit later, before that it was Knox County. So, if I am searching for land records, would they be found at the county level in Harlan or Knox county? Thanks for any help. I'm still pretty darn new at this and feel a little like a ship on a massive body of water without oars! :-) Thanks!

~Kristie Lovely Reich

Land Grant - Franklin County, GA - General Question

My ancestor Aaron Campbell was granted land in Franklin Co, GA in 1789. I have not found record of the original grant, but there is a record of the transfer of the deed from Aaron Campbell to Edward Bryan.

I found a brief description in
"Deeds of Franklin County, Georgia 1784-1826" by Martha Walters Acker.

Page 80, 81: DEED dated Ga. 29 April 1795, rec. 26 April 1796, from Aaron CAMPBELL and wife Lydia of Franklin Co. to Edward BRYAN of same. In cons. of 200 pdsl, conveys 180 ac. in Franklin Co. on both sides of Big Shoal Crk., adj. CLEVELAND, HUMPHRIES, surveyed 8 May 1787 and granted to said CAMPBELL 29 Oct 1789 by Gov. George WALTON, and registered in Secretary's Office in Book S. S. S., folio 588 on 10 Nov. 1789. Wit: Robert WALTERS, J.P. Lydia CAMPBELL (x) relinquished her dower right same date.

I have (2) questions:

1) How was one granted land by the governor of the state? Would this have been for some type of military service? Current estimates on his age would have made him probably too young to serve in the Revolutionary War . . .

2) How did "dower rights" work? Could it be that this land was actually a transfer of a GRANT from her father to her husband as part of her dowery?

Any insight on this process would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Melissa
Birmingham, Al

In an 1834 Kentucky transaction between two brothers the word "and" is used instead of "to" in consideration of $25, conveyance of land... So what happened here? Did the first brother listed sell to the second brother land described for $25? Help me understand what I am reading. What should I do next?

Question about Minnesota Land Records

Many of my ancestors emigrated from Sweden to Nebraska and census records say they owned their farms. I'm a naptime geneologist so 90% of my research has been online and Nebraska land records aren't online anywhere. My question is this: I have found several matches in the Minnesota Land Records database and also in the Minnesota Naturalization Index. Names, dates and ages have matched perfectly but yet none of them settled in Minnesota. I'm pretty sure NE wasn't a state in the 1870's (never occurred to me to find that out til I was typing this). So were there primary homestead offices that operated out of Minnesota but sold land that would actually be in the present day Polk County & Saunders County, NE area? Has anyone encountered a similar situation? thanks for any help you can offer! Jen

Taxpayer Question

My grandfather's notes ask this question, and I have never found the answer...so, I'll ask it here. If my gggg-grandfather owned some property before he was 21 years of age...in the 1800's, would he pay taxes on it when he did turn 21 years of age if he owned and sold this and other property as well?
KY land info.

The KY land office site has excellent research info. When you get to the Sec. of State info, go to the beginning page where you will see a picture of the governor. Near the bottom, there will be a link to the American Revolution. You can trace by Veteran's name, Warrant number, and Assignee. Try: www.sos.state.ky.us/ADMIN/LANDOFFI/landoff.htm Another helpful site is as follows: http://ukcc.uky.edu/%7Eatlas/ If you are looking for a particular place (especially streams or cemeteries), type in the name or key word and search by county. For example, I had a deed for land in Breckinridge Co. KY on the headwaters of Spring Creek and Sugartree Run. I could have searched land up and down Sugartree Run since I have a wonderful map. (The same county map can be accessed via this site but it takes some doing.) I typed in Spring Creek on the above site and found it in Meade Co., the county to the east of Breck. Co. My ancestor's land was on the co. line but it was deeded and taxed in Breck. Co. At this site, the tiger map is like a child's crayon drawing. The topo map is just that. You can drive your little mouse around your relative's land. By doing that before my trip to KY, I was pretty familiar with the road, where the hills were, etc. Hope this helps someone!

I am looking for the death record on a Nick Pallis; He immigrated from Greece and his true sir name is Petropolos but he shortened it to Pallis. My understanding is that he died in a New York hospital, but had owned a business in Greek Town. He died about 1950. I understand he owned a restranut/bar/hotel. Any help would be appreciated.
