My father worked for Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 20+ years until his death in 1973. They were able to supply me with his pay records for all 20 years, even showing the two breaks in employment for military service and a bout with TB.

Great resource.

To add to the responses, Yes, all men of eligible age registered for the draft in World War I. When the draft began, all males aged 21 to 30 were required to register. Then in August 1918 Congress expanded the age range to include all men 18 to 45. Your library probably has a subscription to Ancestry.com if that helps. Alternately, if you ask the forum to look up your grandfather's registration for you, someone can do that, but would need his name. If you can add the place where he lived, his spouse or parents, that would help the forum find him in the draft rolls. If he was born as late as 1903, he was too young. Hope this helps.

Deteriorating usefulness of SSDI - Missing Entries

In the last 2-3 years, there have been a number of changes in the ways that deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration and in the ways that the SSDI is made available to the public. I have been finding that more and more often, I find an obituary and no SSDI entry ever appears. Not just that the SSN itself is redacted, and that some of the SSDI databases are not updated as often as they used to be, but some deaths are never included.

I put together the following chart, which shows the effect. (counts are from Ancestry.com)

Has anyone gone into more detail to determine which states are under-reporting?

My database has many immigrants from the 1895-1940 timeframe. I filtered the 1511 individuals with SSNs to exclude the U.S.-born and the known naturalized. This left 78 who were not naturalized by 1940. Admittedly, some already had their 1st papers, and could have naturalized before their deaths. And I lack most SSN application dates.
Since the purpose of the having a SSN was to track employment and retirement benefits, early application was likely more linked to type of work (big industry) than naturalization status.

You also need to know that all people are not in the SSDI, if their death was not reported to social security. This is especially true if the person was not yet collecting social security when they died. Here is a good site to search by first name and birthdate, if you don't know a woman's married name.
http://ssdmf.info/

I'm not sure what you are asking or assuming about the middle numbers. As far as I know, the first and middle set of numbers relate to where you lived when you applied for the #.

See Steve Morse's "One Step" site re SSN:
"Decoding Social Security Numbers in One Step(for numbers issued prior to June 25, 2011)"
http://stevemorse.org/ssn/ssn.html
Death makes no sense as it applies to a social security number, since how can they assign a new ss# to a dead person? The middle two numbers in my SS# are 72, and I am very much alive! My sister has the same 72 in the middle of hers.......there is a better answer somewhere. I don't know what it is, but I know what it is not and the middle numbers are assigned upon birth now.

You would enter their name and date of birth, if known; also state of birth, if known. That would pull up a list of possibilities showing at least the month and year of death; where their Social Security Number was issued (often, but not always, the state where they were born); and the geographic location where their last benefits were payable (usually, but not always, where they were living when they died). Then you would search additional records (birth, death or marriage) to find family data that may confirm that is the person you seek. Keep in mind that the SSDI usually only goes back as far as the early 1960s, and does not include everyone who died. (Check the "About Social Security Death Index" notes below the search box to see details of what you may find, and what to do with it.)

You can request a lookup from social security, usually the catch is if you can't prove someone has died, but you do have his death certificate. It costs around 29.00 and they won't refund it if they don't find it. It also depends if he was working age when social security came into being, the early 1930's.
I just looked at his death certificate online. It says he was 84, so it is very doubtful he applied for social security.
I will keep looking around and see what I can find. What was his wife's name?

James Franklin McCoy died February 21, 1940, Cannelton, Fayette County, West Virginia. I do already have his death cert, but was hoping if he had a social security number that I could find out who his parents were. I am currently stuck on him (I do have parents listed, but cannot prove if they are correct) as I do not know for sure what state he was born in because it varies between different census/other records from Ohio to W Virginia. I don't know if he even had a SSN or not, but was hoping if he did that his parents would be listed on the application (if that is something I can even look up if he had one). thanks

Thanks for your response. I don't have any other information about this man except that my grandmother's name is on the record of the divorce. This record is a page from what seems to be a record of divorces in Duval county for a certain period of time. My grandmother won't talk about this issue, so there is no way to get any better documentation from this end.
I am trying to track down my mother's father who divorced my grandmother before my mother was born. My grandmother cut all ties with him and all I can verify is a divorce record (not the actual document- haven't been able to get that on Ancestry.com). I have also found another person with this same name on Ancestry.com but I cannot link the two for sure unless I can get a social security number for the man on the divorce record. Does anyone know if the divorce certificate (or whatever would be on file at the court house) would have this information? The court house seems to have only a limited number of files available, but I'm considering paying to try to get the divorce cert. but don't want to waste my money if the SSN is not on there.

Thanks a million for any information you can give me.
