California Birth Records before 1905

I understand in California, Birth Records prior to 1905 were kept by the counties rather than the state. When tying to obtain a copy of one of these earlier birth certificates, you are directed to contact the county. Are there any additional resources or databases that may help me identify the actual county of birth for an individual, Ruth Taylor, born in 1898 in California? Thus far, my sources are limited to two different census records neither of which specify a county.
