Old terms for cause of death

Twice now I have seen "sustained a shock" referred to as the cause of death for elderly men in the 1920s/30s in their obituaries (Rhode Island, if it matters). Does this mean seizure, stroke, something else? I really doubt this means electricution, if so my ancestors were very careless with electricity!
