MYFAMILY.com still sending painful Birthday reminders years after person is dead

Be very careful about your decision to open a MYFAMILY.com website.
I had a website for several years and then closed it back around 2004. MYFAMILY.com is STILL using all the e-mail address for the member I had to send them Birthday and Anniversary Reminders.
This has caused me and my family great pain as some of the members are now deceased. It looks like I am insensitive (because I already know of their passing) and it’s a very hurtful reminder to the other family members.
I have contacted MYFAMILY.com several times and after MUCH transferring and calling, they assured me it would not happen again as they “fixed the problem”.
Well, it was okay for a year or so and now it is happening again.
I am getting very angry letters from my family and worst of all…..I don’t know it’s happening since I don’t receive ANYTHING!!!
How long has it been happening and how many family members haven’t let me know about their pain.
I don’t recommend using the site.
Where to find Vital Records pre-1865?

I'm trying to find out where I would need to look to find vital records pre-1865. I know that these records are often scarce and are often found to have been damaged or lost in fires and not cared for as well as we genealogists would hope, but if it's possible to find records prior to that date, where would I start to look? I have checked with the counties in Ohio where my ancestor would have been, but they only carry records back to the 1867 if that far. Once you've run out of state and county sources, where do you look? Any help is much appreciated!!!

Hi All, I am at wits end trying to figure out how to locate vital records for my Winfield/German Flatts ancestors. The county site says they are located at the city or township level but I have been unable to find a Winfield website/address/phone number. Can someone give me some advice on where to look? Is there a central index/newspaper/library somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Amy ammurphy@voyager.net

I would like to see a site where people could post the locations of official state or county websites where marriages and or deaths are searchable.

Example: Missouri Death Certificates at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#...

Example: Cook County, Illinois marriages: http://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/SignIn.aspx

I asked Ancestry.com for a board where the location of these sites could be posted. I received a reply that this request did not fit their board requirements. There are so many requests on many boards for the locations of such sites, one board where these site location could be posted would be a great research source.

Hi. I'm a little bit confused after finding my great grandmother's birth registered twice in BMD records. Exactly the same name is used (including middle name) and exactly the same district but 5 years apart. Both volumes were the same (7a) but the page numbers were different (611,695). IS it possible that she was registered twice two years apart? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you:)

I understand in California, Birth Records prior to 1905 were kept by the counties rather than the state. When tying to obtain a copy of one of these earlier birth certificates, you are directed to contact the county. Are there any additional resources or databases that may help me identify the actual county of birth for an individual, Ruth Taylor, born in 1898 in California? Thus far, my sources are limited to two different census records neither of which specify a county.

Thanks!

Robert was born Dec 25 1857 in Pittsburgh, Pa to supposedly Robert Leepard and Abigail Mason. He also had two sisters, Jennie and Sally. Sally died in New Orleans. I would like to know if this was his parents names and these are his sisters names. He might have had a brother also. They migrated from Canada, Ontaria possibly. Robert's parents might have been killed in the great train wreck of Pa when he was a little boy and was sent to live with an uncle there in pa. Would like info on him and siblings, parents. Also heard Robert was taken to Ala. by preacher to live.

Birth Certificate questions

I'm doing some genealogy research on my family and I came across some Birth Certificates for someone in my family and I wanted to ask some questions about them.

There is one birth certificate for this person dated about two weeks after the birth. The date signed is about a week after the birth and the the date received by the local Reg. is the day after that.

I found a second birth certificate for the same person dated about four months after the birth date with "date signed" and "date received by local reg." about four months after the birth date as well. Different dates than the first one.

Would it be usual to have different dates for these on different copies?

Also the attendants are different people on the different copies although I think both were doctors in the town. Both certificates say 1 attendant but have different names and signatures for that one.

Would different copies list different attendants?

The second certificate has a number over the line that says "child" and the first one does not have a number there.

One thing I noticed is the second certificate has a 1-N and a three digit number on the "parents" line. The last number is a one.

The first certificate is very faint with the 1-n and a three digit number but it looks like the last two are zeros which are not the numbers in the second certificate.

Would this mean anything if they were different numbers on the Parents line?

The whole thing looks very sloppy with them mistaking a G for a six and an eight for a nine on the birth number so it may be typos in some areas.

Would any of these things question the validity of the information on the birth certificates? Is this normal for Birth Certificates to be this way?

Thanks,
Brian

Advice on illegitimate children sought

I wonder if anyone can help, or point me to some resources that could. My GGGrandfather James was baptised in 1815 with his Mother's surname. 1 year 2 months later, his mother married and at some point James took his mothers' new surname. His mother's husband could be his natural father, but I can only guess that.

James married twice, the first time in 1836 there is no father's name given, and on the certificate for the second marriage James' father is just given as "deceased".

His mother went on to have 4 more children. James' sister (or half-sister) Sarah looked after his children after the death of his first wife, and in the census they are listed as Nephews.

If James' mothers husband accepted he was the father (whether that was true or not) could James just change his surname, or this time, would there be a legal process required?

TIA, and apologies if this has been answered before and my search hasn't found the post!

No birth record question

I'm having a difficult time because there is no birth record on file for me. Both parents are deceased, and
family was not close. No reason to believe I was adopted,
and even if I was there should be a record. I am unable
to prove, by an standard means, that I'm a US citizen, although I know full well I am, as I've never lived anywhere else. I cannot obtain a passport witout a Birth
record or baptismal certificate, neither of which I have.
I have no living family that I know of.

I have a copy of my mothers death certificate, which states her birthplace and I've ordered a copy of my fathers death certificate. Neither of their birth records
are on file either, but that's due to when they were
born, 1911 and 1914, and both were in rural areas. I, OTOH, was born in Long Beach, Ca. The hospital I was always
told I was born in, only keeps records for 10 years, and
I was born in 1954.

I do have some school records from Jr. High and High school, that state place of birth, but that's not enough.
I also have a letter from Social Security stating that they
have already destroyed my fathers records, but that they
did pay survivor benefits in my name (my father died when
I was thirteen, making me eligible as his dependent) for
approximately 4 years. None of this is sufficent to get
a passport.

Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.
Any ideas on how to prove my status without a birth
record?

Lived in Lambeth, UK in 1891 with children Caroline, Charles, Maud & Willis

In the past I have looked up the Husband's record of marriage then taken the surname listed of the partner checked to see if there is a match to the first name.

But it doesn't seem to list the partners name back in 1881, does anyone know when they started putting this on the records and any advice on how I can track down her maiden name

Thanks H

I'm looking for the author of some pocket diaries I found from 1863, 64, and 67. He never gives his name but always mentions Amelia who I believe is his wife. He mentions a five year anniversary in 1864 and Amelia giving birth to a boy on Oct 9th or 10th. He mentions going to Forty Fort almost daily and to Kingston PA daily as well. I also know his birth day is Oct. 2 1827. It is very possible his childrens names were Mary who turned 8 june 3rd 1867 and Eddie who may be the boy born in 64. He lived in close proximity to the Crammers and the Hughes' but I think Mrs. Hughes was a widow. Ugh, ok so I know tons about this guys friends and I even know he didn't want Lincoln to win. How do I find his name???

I'm trying to find possible records of the death of a few of my ancestors but they're prior to the statutory records started in 1855. I didn't see on the GRO website where there were any parish records for this sort of thing, only for marriages or births.

Is there a place on the GRO website that has this info or another place I could find it. Unfortunately we don't know their year of deaths. Only where they were married and where their children were born

Thanks, Suzanne Livingstone

There are web sites which sell copies of uncertified death certificates for $3 while certified copies from the state go for $12.

My question is how do these sellers have access to the death certificate database and why can't anyone access it? As far as I know, the state only provides certified copies (and, of course, charges the same even if they can't find it).

It is tempting to use such a service but I don't want to abet some state employee's illegal side job or pay for something that I could possibly access myself.

I have what I thought was my great-great grandfather, but have found my grandfather and great grandfather listed in someone else's tree with a different great-great grandfather. I've contacted the other tree owner but have not gotten a response.

Where do I start to try to find out who my great-great grandfather is? I was always under the impression from my father (who has passed away) that our family line came from Germany, but the other tree has it coming from Poland.

Thanks!

I have recently discovered a will which may or may not be related to my ancestors,
The person concerned died intestate, (did not make a will) however his sister and her husband put in a claim to the assets and goods, can I assume that there was no other family involved or surviving? As my understanding was that any goods would pass to the next of kin, i.e. son daughters etc
Secondly if a person was made an executor of the will would there be any records of how they divided up the estate amongst the family if no stipulation was made in the original will?
any thoughts appreciated

Paul
How do I obtain a UK will from overseas?

Hello

I'm trying to obtain my great great grandfather's will (if he made one) from overseas.
I have his death certificate, therefore I know his full name (William Eskrett), date of death (5th April 1903) and last address (2 Bowling Avenue, Kimberley Street, in Myton, Hull, Yorkshire).

I e-mailed the York Probate sub-registry to find out how to go about this, and got a standard reply back saying that I'd need to supply these three things (which I did in my email - it was like the person never read what I wrote!) She also said I'd need to do a postal order (which I'm guessing is like sending over a bank cheque made out in UK Sterling?)

If I were to pay by postal order, the bank cheque alone would cost 4 times the original fee (which is 5 pounds)! Is there a service available that would accept payment by credit card? I just find that for an overseas person, such as myself, it's prohibitive asking for payment by cheque.

Can anyone help me?

Many thanks!

Rachel

Handwriting help please

On a 1862 marriage certificate copy, one of the witnesses signs his/her name with his/her initials.

The first initial looks like a numer "9" but instead of a curly tail (which would tell me it's probably a "J") it's a short straight line slightly inclining to the left going no further than just to/on the line it's written on. The loop of the "9" is large, more round than oval, and almost looks like and "o". Any idea what it could be? I've been on various hand-writing web-sites but can't find a character like it. I was almost sure it was a "J" but all the other "J's" on the page are very distinguisable as a classic double loop "J's", with the second halves distintly below the line - why should this one be different?
Hope someone knows what I mean. I can scan the signature in and send it on if someone wishes.
Charlotte.

I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I have a old (1891) Roman Catholic marriage record for some of my ancestors, and I can't seem to find the meaning for a phase on it:
on the "where from" line (ex loco) it says:

"Sina etc. u. s."

Google searches haven't helped clear it up. (euphemistic for "nobody has any idea more specific than foreign) but I'm far from certain.

Anybody have any idea?

Thanks,
--steve
Hello all, I have been trying to search for relatives on this site and I cant find birth records for my Nan and her sisters. I managed to find them both on another genealogy website but cant find them here also I cant find the death records for there Dad. I was just wondering if the Registration district (keighley) and sub district (bingley) had not been uploaded by a mistake

Grace Whitfield
Mothers maiden name: Dinsdale
Dob: 27th of August 1920
Registration District: Keighley
Sub-District: Bingley
vol: 9a page: 302

Merenah Whitfield
Mothers maiden name: Dinsdale
Dob: October/November/December 1921
Registration District: Keighley (Could be wrong)
Sub-District: Bingley (could be wrong)
vol: 9b page: 74

Also they had an older sister who was not a whitfield called Eva. I dont know when she was born and I cant find her on the Birth registry maybe this record is missing from the site too. I would look on the other site but I am not sure when she was born and you have to pay for credits so could end up spending alot of money looking there. Thank you for your help

Like most people, i have been using the IGI at familysearch.org in my research. But i am aware that there is a cd rom which can be purchased too.
What i'm wanting to know is whether it is worth buying the disk or not. I mean, does it hold more information than the free search at the site?

The reason i am asking is that i have been able to locate only one of my ancestors on the website, and the information was very little. If i buy the cd rom will i find the rest of his family on there?

thanks for any advice you can give me

I have two copies of my Grandparents marrage Certificate, on both copies their ages are wrong but everything else is right. The one says their marrage was in 1905, the other 1915. I know that they ran away to get married and that she would have been 20ys old, may-be she added some years on, but were birth certificates needed then to prove age?. The 1905 seems right as they had their first child in 1910. On both Certificates their fathers names, proffesions, etc. all add up. Can anyone solve this? Hope so. Carole.

I have a few people that I'm looking for that were born in Ireland and immigrated to NY and haven't had much luck in narrowing their place of origin down by census records, passenger lists, or any other cheap and easily found information. Before I start shelling out lots of money, I was wondering about people's experiences on finding a town or county of birth on either marriage certificates or on the birth certificates of children where the parents were immigrants. The marriages or births in question would be from the late 1800's or early 1900's.

I'm in a bit of a quandry. I don't know where I need to go to find my great grandfather's original surname. The family story is that grandpa John witnessed his parents death. They were hit by a train in Baltimore, MD. In order for him to give his testimony as a witness he changed his name to Harvey to be able to give his testimony. Because at the time, family members could not be witness. I don't know when they died or when he changed his name. But he was something before he changed his name to John T. Harvey. He lived in Baltimore, MD all his life and he was born in 1860's and died in the 1950s.

Please if anyone can help me that would be a big plus. I am estranged from his only daughter (my grandmother) and I am lax to contact her.

My 4x great grandfather was born in 1804. Is the BMD index only began in the 1830's I need to search parish records.
I have typed in all the information I have including the birth year but All I am getting is records from the 16the-17th centuries. It's pointless me looking there yet because I haven't even been able to leave the 19th century!

How can I effectively search Ancestry's parish records?

Does anyone know of any resources to find a name when all you have is a date of death? The person I am looking for died only 25 years ago, but I do not have his name. I have tried the local obits and SSDI - but nothing shows up. If anyone has any additional resources that would be great.

Can You Read This?

I recently obtained a copy of an ancestor's 1898 birth certificate from New York State. His parents were Czechs who immigrated in the 1890s. Their exact birthplaces have been a mystery to my family. This document lists the parents birthplaces, but in cursive that is hard to read. I've posted a copy of the document on my web server and attached it to this message. Please check it out and tell me what you think it says. Thank you in advance! Here's the URL:

http://jimvajda.com/Vajda-SJVI_1898_birth_cert.jpg

Feel free to reply to me directly at jvajda@gmail.com

Has anyone used this service? If so, can you tell me what can be seen when you click on the link for the record? Is it the actual record (registration) or is it a transcription of the registration that they were looking at? I am thinking about subscribing to the service but if it is a transciption only I may not.

Thanks to anyone that can answer my questions.

Roberta
