2008 Settlers' Day - Drummond Island Families

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is now 2008 and we are well into the year of the Drummond Islanders, as the Town of Penetanguishene will shortly proclaim. Two years ago, our Settlers’ Day committee determined that the Drummond Islanders families would be our selection for 2008. Choosing a group and not just one family was a departure from our usual procedure but in the 180 years since their arrival, they have all made a significant contribution to the economic, social or cultural development of our town.
Our planning committee of volunteers has come up with ideas for a truly wonderful September weekend and we hope you will join us and all the descendants of these families in honouring this remarkable group of people.

A list of events and a registration form can be found on our website: www.pencenmuseum.com

Go to Events and Exhibits, click on the icon and when the new window appears, scroll down to the bottom paragraph “Settlers’ Days 1008”. Use the blue slider (what do they call those things?) to see the link to the flyer and the forms. The flyer has all the latest information regarding times and prices.

Now that you have read the event sheet, there are a few important items I should mention…………….

You do not have to register to purchase tickets to the Meet ‘n Greet or the fundraising dinner. You can obtain tickets by calling the office (705) 549-2150.
We are thrilled to have obtained John Bentley Mays as our guest speaker. His award winning book “Arrivals” has an important section on the history of the Drummond Islanders and their contribution to Ontario history.
If you are part of a large group and would like to sit together during the dinner, we can accommodate your request – just let us know.
We ask that children who attend the dinner be at least 12 years of age. If you are coming from out-of-town and must bring your children, we can arrange entertainment for them while you attend the dinner.
Please note: purchase your dinner tickets early. Last year’s dinner was sold out well before September and most of the people on the waiting list could not be seated for dinner.
The Saturday and Sunday events are free with the exception of the breakfast.
The maps will be sold in the gift shop.
Two of the events are being held at the local Legion because we decided to involve other non-profit groups.
Discovery Harbour closes officially for the season on Labour Day weekend but will be
re-opened on Sunday for a guided tour of some of the buildings and the grounds.
We will have local French-Canadian entertainment at the Friday night and Saturday events.
We have limited space in the Great Hall so reserve your family table early. Bring your research, documents and photos. After hours security is excellent.
We welcome the donation of items for the silent auction.

This is your party and your family reunion. Mark your calendars. Tell your cousins and friends.
If you have any other questions, please direct them to genealogy@pencenmuseum.com

Pam Tessier
Research Co-ordinator
Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives

Congrats to Bert and thank you to his family for the wonderful dinner spread that they provided.

This reunion of Howse's & Livingstone's is held each year on the third weekend in August at the Victoria Settlement which is located on the north banks of the North Saskatchwan River just east of Edmonton and south of Smokey Lake, Alberta. So if anyone is a descendant of the Howse Family or of the Livingstone Family, please accept this as your invitation to attend in the future. Hopefully we will see you there next year.

Jenkins Dropin Reunion

A Jenkins Dropin Reunion will be held in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on Chebogue Point Road the Week-end of July 30, 31 August 1 & 2, 2004. Just a dropin throughout the week-end to meet relations known or newfound. This Jenkins family, family of Griffith Jenkins, came from New England about 1750 to the Digby area and in the 1790's three sons moved, with their mother to Yarmouth - James, John & William. Our family is directly decendent from John but the reunion is for all of Griffith;s decendents and the families they gathered along the way. Perhaps if enough interest a more formal reunion can be planned for an upcomming year.

CONWAY REUNION 2002

We are hosting a Conway Reunion, August 2-5th 2002 in St.Gabriel de Valcartier, Quebec. Many of our Irish Ancestors first landed here in the 1820's by way of free passage offered by the British in order to settle the land around Quebec City. Most stayed in the area of Valcartier and Ste.Catherine de Portneuf but some moved on to other parts of Canada and the United States... many of our Ancestors went to work in the logging camps in WI, MN, ME, NH. and others joined the volunteers in a fight in the Civil War, I know of 3 brothers that enlisted, two in NY and one in Georgia. Francis Conway was working in the shipyards in Georgia when the war broke out and he joined the 25th regiment, he was mustered out in 1865 and returned to Quebec to marry Bridget Neville, they then returned to the States, and he was last known living in Rochester NY in 1920. His two brothers James and Richard, have never been located since their inscription, though we do know they were mustered out. You can check out the Reunion Website at:
http://copeman.accessgenealogy.com
I am researching the pioneer families of Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; Fitzroy Twp. in particular. I am working on my husband's family & these names include Harris, Carr, Pierce, Cuthbertson, Black, Larrett & Styles. We & our 5 children are planning a camping trip up to Fitzroy Provincial Park in late August (date pending) & are planning a pot luck picnic one weekend. So far, we have several interested roots seekers/descendants planning to come. It will be smallish. Maybe bigger next year??? Please e-mail me if you are even a wee bit interested! <rharris@interhop.net>

HI
This is just to reaffirm that the weekend is
not a family reunion but a research weekend,
where we will get aquainted, do some research
and exchange info. There will be a cost for
a hall rental and bus that will be shared among
the participants but all other expenses are the
responsibility of the individual. I will send
out a list of accommodations available and it
looks like it will take place in late July.
If you have any questions contact me.
Karen. birdsloft@hotmail.com

Swarthout Reunion in Canada

Hello everyone, sorry I have been slow, but, I had a major set back. It seemed that evything was up in the air when Norwich refused to particpate in the Reunion. The archivist got involved so did the Mayor and so did the Museum Curator. Everything is back up and running! We will be having a Reunion in Canada it will be Held in two places Norwich and Woodstock. The only place with enough accomodations for everyone. Now this year it is going to be called "The Founding Family Reunion, because we have our cousins, the Lossing family as well, and they were a definate Founding Family. Up here in Canada, married into the Swarthout families more than once, so it seem only fair to involved them as well.
If you are new and wish to be included please write to me with your snail mail address so I can provide you with the information.
Kathy
kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca

2001 Ballykilcline Reunion

The Ballykilcline Society Reunion 2001
Date: 14,15 and 16 June, 2001.
Place: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Initial planning for the Ballykilcline Society 2001 Reunion is underway, and in order to move ahead we need to have some indication of your interest. If you are contemplating to attend or even if you are just ‘thinking about it” will you please let us know by e-mailing your intention to Bev Hanley at bevhanley@telus.net. This will not obligate you in any way but will allow us to proceed with planning and, in addition, we shall take the opportunity to mail you a full package of information about Victoria and Vancouver Island.
The nostalgia and magic of the 1999 Reunion in Ireland and the wonderful breadth of expertise presented at the 2000 Reunion in Lowell are hard acts to follow. We’ve had some feedback suggesting that the Ballykilcline Society 2001 Reunion, while still retaining our Irish genealogical and history interests, should allow time for us all to meet, talk, share and learn more about the research activities and interests of our fellow members. So in addition to presentations by local experts on Irish immigration and genealogy research in Canada, the Ballykilcline Society 2001 Reunion schedule will also allow time for some socializing, sightseeing and shopping in Canada’s premiere West Coast holiday destination.
Up to 15 April 2000 the ‘early-bird’ fee for the three-day Ballykilcline Society 2001 Reunion is US $70.00 per person. After the 15 April deadline the fee will increase to US $100 and a total no rebate policy will be in effect. This extremely modest fee will cover the cost of conference room rentals, speaker’s honorariums, coffee and some light snacks together with two evening meals – complete with Irish music and dancing!

To view the 51 surnames from Ballykilcline see www.ballykilcline.com
