Concerning my second posting today, you can find also the word Mazepa instead of Mazeppa, either for the assasinated woman journalist born in New York from ukrainian Soviet diplomats only described as Ana Polikovtskaya or the Mazepa "hetman" from Ukrainia who at the beginnings of the XVIII Centyry "trahisoned" Russian Tsar Peter Ist.

Ivan Stepanovych Mazepa (Ukrainian: Іван Степанович Мазепа historically spelled as Mazeppa; 20 March 1639—2 October 1709), Cossack Hetman of the Hetmanate in Left-bank Ukraine, in 1687–1708, can be found under the Google searches in English for the word "Mazepa" of the well known http://www.wiki.org.

Music Composer Franz Liszt wrote music around the dream involved with such important person.

At the end of the XVIII Century, Tsarine Catherine II of Russia and many European western powers Foreign Affairs Chancilleries used the name "Mazepa Razumowski" or "Mazeppa Razumowski", (with two p instead of one p), to describe this (perhaps) Ukrainian - Polish - Russian family linked to important diplomatic activities on behalf of the ever-expanding Russian Empire.
Hello,
I am searching for someone who can help me complete our family tree. We have a gap we are trying to fill between the 15th and 19th century if any one of you have any leads.
This is what we got from one of my ancestors Kazimierz Jonkaitis in Kowno in 1938-39 (translated from Lithuanian):
"In the 14th century, in the time of Prince Witold, Migas Jonkaitis was a majordomo in Prince Witold court. He had two sons: Grzegosz (George) & Jakub (Jacob), and they where christians.
We are from Jakub's lineage, Grzegosz lived in Szatlej."

We also know that Migas and Jakub lived in Sascu (Szaczku) in Zmudzi.

I will post more information about my family tree, hopefully in the near future.
Thank you,
Dorota Jonkajtys

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me.

I am seeking information about the surname (old spelling) WIELOWIEYSKI / (new spelling) WIELOWIEJSKI. In about the 10 century the name may have been spelled Wieniawici.

I have been told the surname Wielowiejski is a rare, old name that comes from nobility and is very important in Polish history.

For Wielowiejski, I have found 2 coat of arms, Polkzic and Poraj. In the "Orderu Vertuti Militari" 1792 I found a Wielowiejski.

I am curious as to how and why the surname is important in the history of Poland. I would also like to know more about the surname Wielowiejski and it's relationship to the 2 Coat of Arms & Orderu Vertuti Militari.

Thank you in advance
AJ
I am just starting to research our family history (family name Jasienczyk) . My Grandfather immigrated to Canada in the 1920s from Poland with the last name Jasienczyk. We cannot find any (unknown relatives) in North America with this name - at least with this spelling.

I have a limited understanding about the Coat of Arms and how it works, however, it seems that families with the "Jasienczyk" Coat of Arms have a different last name. Can anyone provide any insight into this - is it possible that this was not the original family name? Is it possible to have the same surname as the familiy Code of Arms? .

Thanks for any insight (and education) you can provide !

trying to find relatives

This is my story. It is not complete but it will help somehow.
My grand grand father Mikolaj Cebrowski(born abt 1878 - died in 1918) and his wife Marta Zarubicka(born abt 1880 -died in 1963). They resided in village Kyjdantsy Ternopil region in Ukraine. This territory before 1939 belonged to Poland, to Austro-Hungarian Empire. My grand grand father is the offspring of the noble family Cebrowski. The family was brought to ruin in the 18th century. And my grand grand father worked on the land.
My grand grand parents had, as I know, 7 children. They were Jan, Boleslaw, Bronislaw, Jakob, Stefania, Marta and Wladyslaw.
Jan Cebrowski(born in 1896 - died in 1982) was my grand father. In 1914 he was called up for the military service on the side of Austro-Hungerian Empire. He was taken prisoner in Russia and remained in Russia. Then he studied in Kiev in Art Institute but didn`t graduate it. He graduated from Kiev medical institute and worked as a doctor.
When the 2 world war started he happened to be in partisan group where he was a doctor. Then he got into the detachment of Wojsko Polske which was organised on the territory of the Soviet Union. He served in the tank regiment as the head of medical department. He finished war in 1946.
This is the information which may seem familiar to somebody.
His younger brother and sister Marta and Wladyslaw immigrated to Germany and now their offsprings reside in France Obernai near Strasbourg.
And one more, Jan cebrowski`s cousin Mikolaj Kychiwka immigrated to Argentina before 1939.

Hello, Am looking for information about the family Mackiewicz which came from the village of Summe, Poland. Supposedly this family was of Russ./Polish nobility. A son, Anton, came to the US in 1894. He settled in Ironwood, MI. His death certificate states his father as Julian Mackiewicz and his mother as Helen Zareba.
We know that Summe is now called Sumowo and is in the province of Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Poland today.
His declaration of intention papers state that he was a subject of the Czar of Russia, which would have been Alexander III or Nicholas II.
Any information would be helpful.
Thank you,
Margie

Daszewski Signet Ring Discrepancy

From the Polska Encyklopedia Szlachecka, Volume 3, page 118, one gets a colorful description of the Daszewski shield which happens to be partitioned into quarters.

My Daszewski signet ring agrees totally with this description except for the fourth quarter. The official description states that the fourth quarter (Litewski Arms) displays an armored knight on horseback. Instead my fourth quarter has a rather dashing figure with his feet planted squarely on the ground -- shield against his breast in his left hand and a sword pointing downwards in his right hand.

Would there be any reason my signet ring is slightly different from the official description? Is a Litewski variation? Is it instead an image of the Ruthenian Archangel Michael?

I will try and attach a JPG image of the ring's shield -- hoping it will help sort out my confusion. Many thanks.

SYMON WILICHOWSKI

I am looking from information about my gr. gr.gr. grandfather, SYMON WILICHOWSKI. I know that he was born in Wolwark Poland and that he died on 27 February 1869. arounf the year 1830 he was either knighted or given a title of somesort for deed performed for the "king and country". I know that in Poland during the 1830's that there was a war of sorts in Poland with Russia. How ever at a later time for a reason unknown to any of the family Symon sold the title. Symon was married to Magdaline Szulc. Their children were Joseph (18 Mar 1853 Poland- 1935 in Wisconsin), Kanstancia Wilichowski, Marcin Wilichowski, Valentine Wilickowski (Feb 1863- ?). Symon died when Joseph was only 16 years old. Little did Symon know that after his death that his sons would live under the rule of a squire.

Does anyone know why Symon would have recieved the title and/or why he would have sold it?

Thank you
Amber

TANSKY? Possible noble ancestors

Researching the Jewish TANSKY family which was in Nikolayev, Ukraine in the 1880-1920 timeframe, I've run across a family story that the Tansky family was mixed blood (married non-Jews), had originated in Poland, and that an ancestor a few generations back had been a Count. This seems just odd enough that I wouldn't expect that the story would have been passed on if there was no truth to it. On the other hand, the rarity of the title "Count" in Poland suggests that they weren't Polish nobility, but perhaps gained (and lost) the title after the partition of Poland.

Unfortunately the earliest that we've traced the Nikolayev clan of Tanskys are to two men who would likely have been born in the 1840-1860 timeframe. Their spouses seem to have had surnames Jenin and Simon. One was apparently in the service of the Tsar at some point. We've been uncertain how to trace them any further back.

Are there any records of Polish nobles marrying into Jewish families or converting to Judaism? Are there any other elements of this tale that suggest avenues of research?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi

My great grandfather (harold Brown 1880-1929) was rumoured to be descended from a Russian Count. I have indentified his grandfather, Alexander de Braunhelder who moved from Poland to Liverpool (England) in the mid 1800s. Does anyone know anything about this name, if it is indeed a noble one, and where I can find out more about Russian/Polish nobility.

Romanski reprise

I wrote earlier regarding my wife's family, the Romanski's, supposedly of Polish noble origins. I have more information on her grandfather. he was Maciej Antoni Romanski, born 1909 in Brzezany, Poland, which I think is today Berezhany, Ukraine. His wife was Helena Romanski (nee Gadzinowski). My wife's family remembers their family as having been Polish nobility with a coat of arms called something like Slcpowron (I can't quite read the writing, so I am not sure of the spelling). We know a fair amount about Maciej's life--he was in the Polish army in 1939 and was captured by the Germans, was liberated and moved to England then America. But we know nothing of the family or of its supposed noble lineage before Maciej and Helena.

Does anyone know of a noble Polish family that this might connect to? Or, for that matter, a non-noble family that this might connect to?

My wife's father (Jacek) was a member of the Romanski family of Poland. Family legend has it that this was part of the nobility of Poland and my wife's grandfather was an officer in the Polish military in 1939 and was captured by the Germans. Does anyone have any information about the Romanski family in general (I assume if they are nobility there would be some records about them). If anyone is related to Romanskis I can also get more information about the given names that are known for comparison. I appreciate any help you can give.
