There is a bit of a puzzle, which I may or may not have solved involving the 1st lord of Shelton, Robert De Sheldonne.
Robert De Sheldonne and his brother Guy De Sheldonne were noted as having been supporters of William the Conqueror.
Now, the puzzle, Shelton is in Norfolk England, just south of Norwich. There is Shelton, Shelton Common and Shelton Green, all in close proximity of each other.
Robert of Mortain, as well as his brother Guy of Mortain, both of which were William's half brothers, are the ONLY Norman nobles of merit granted lands in Norfolk by William as Lords.
The first Lord De Sheldonne died between 1095 and 1107. Considering the circumstantial evidence, is it possible that Robert of Mortain and Robert De Shelton are the same man?
