Here is my line:

John Proctor - Elisabeth Basset
William James Proctor (1679-1756) - Rebecca Little
James John Proctor (b. 1701) - Sarah Cord
John Proctor (b. 1719)-Comfort Cheasney
(John) William Proctor (b. 1746) - Mary Orland
Jeremiah Proctor (1779-1855) - Maranda Carnahan

It is only starting with Jeremiah Proctor do I have complete dates and info. Other information came from a source who is very difficult to followup with.

It is my understanding that many Proctors named male sons with John as a pre-name as tribute to John who was hanged.

Any connections to anyone else researching this line??

I also descend from Anne Pudeator hanged 22 September 1692 through the Averill line.

Joseph Putnam

I am trying to see if I can find any supporting documentation that the Putnams and Porters could be found at opposite ends of events/issues in Salem before & during the witch trails. I came across a book that stated that one man named Thomas Putnam Sr. died and left everything to the 2nd wife Mary Veren Putnam & their one son Joseph. The book continued to state that the children from the first marriage were bitter toward the 2nd wife and their step brother who recieved all of their fathers estate. The eldest son felt that it was rightfully his.

The story continues to state that the stepbrother Joseph married Elizabeth Porter a family with just about as much if not more money than the Putnams.

The Putnams were said to belong to the church of Samuel Parris (father and Uncle to Betty Parris, and Abigail Williams who are said to have started the whole thing)

Some say it was more like "The What's in it for me" period vs. a Witch hunt. The sheriff George Corwin got $ for auctioning off the accused's property, the elder Putnams seek revenge.

Please send me your thoughts and leads. I have found some info on the Putnam family but no evidence on the Porter side.

I was born and brought up in Salem and am related to alot of the early settlers. A few of them were Woodbury, Baker, and I think Dodge. There was one of the "witches" who I was related to. If I can help anyone with any questions about in or around Salem, I can probably answer. My grandmother who was a Baker was born in Manchester, Ma. One of her relatives,a Cornelius Baker, married Hannah Woodbury on April 26, 1658 in Salem and had six children. That is my relation to the Woodbury's.

Also discovering that my daughter in law is the 10th Great Granddaughter of Martha Carrier.

So linking up our family so many years later, we wonder if there are any other links to the two women with any inter-marrage between the children of Ann Foster and Martha Carrier.

I have many ancestors involved in the witchcraft era in Essex County. I've just come from the Nurse family burial ground behind Rebecca Nurse's homestead in Danvers, MA. There were stones for the Nurse family (of course) and John Jacobs (my ancestor, the reason for the visit) and also many Proctor stones. What is the relationship between the Proctors and the Nurse family?? Why were they in the same burial ground? The only relationship I know of of is that one of Rebecca and Francis Nurse's children and one of John Proctor's children both married siblings of the Very family. Were they neighbors, or did they have some other relationship? There was no caretaker at the house to answer questions since it is winter now.

If this isn't the right place (and I suspect it isn't, but couldn't find a Connecticut Witchcraft group), please direct me elsewhere. ;)

I'm the 10th great granddaughter of Mary Barnes, one of the last three witches executed in Connecticut in the 1660s. I have little information - and understand there's little available - but would love to connect with any other Barnes descendents who're interested in this event.

Are there any good sources of information I may have missed? I've gotten copies of 'Devil in the Shape of a Woman', notes from a lecture by Richard Dunn on 'Witchcraft Trials in Connecticut', and exerpts from William DeLoss Love's 'The Colonial History of Hartford'.

Thanks for any information / help you may offer.

Jen

According to my family tree, I am a descendant of Robert Follett and Persis Black. Robert was born in Devonshire, England in 1625 and died in Salem Mass. in 1708. Persis was born in Salem, Mass. in 1634 and died there in 1703. They had a son, Benjamin, who was born in Salem, Mass. in 1715 and died in Ashford Twp., Windham, CT. in 1752. I'm wondering if anyone has any information on them, and if they were connected to the Salem witch trials in any way.

Bonnie Magnetti

Is there a family association or other type of organization for the descendants of victims of the Salem Witch Trials. I am a direct descendant of George Jacobs, but also a direct descendant of many accusers and folks on the "bad" side of the witch trials (William Dounton the jailor, Dr. Griggs (who diagnosed "witchcraft", the Putnams, Flints and Bathsheba Pope who threw her shoe at Martha Correy) Would an organization like this have more information on the poor accused? I have tried the local museums in Salem, but they seem to only want to help "serious" researchers, not family members or amateur genealogists.

Hi All,

I have several families in my lines which are connected to the Salem Witch Trials. I would like to correspond with any one descended from the following people.

Maj. Simon WILLARD--majestrate during the trials

Ann FOSTER who died in prison while awaiting trial for being a witch. Her daughter, Mary and grand-daughter of the same name both confessed to being witches and then testified against their mother. Her daughter, Sarah FOSTER married Samuel KEMP, their daughter Abigail KEMP married James BLOOD

Rebecca, Sarah and Mary TOWNE--Rebecca married Francis NURSE, accused of witchcraft and hung 7/19/1692. Sarah married Peter CLOYCE she was also accused but escaped hanging. Mary married Isaac ESTY she was hung 9/22/1692

Mercy LEWIS one of the 'afflicted girls'. Her aunt, Hannah LEWIS married my relative James DARLING. James posted bond and stood up for Mercy in court when she had a child out of wedlock. James DARLING gave testimony against Mary ESTY, Job TOOKEY and Rebecca NURSE. James married as his second wife Sarah PROCTOR possibly the d/o Elizabeth Proctor who escaped hanging.

I know there are other ancestors involved in the Witch Trials in my files but these are the ones coming to my head at the moment.

Please contact me if you have ancestors involved in the Witch Trials.

Lisa

Seeking information about Widow Ann Foster, accused of witchcraft, who died in prison. Who was Ann Foster's husband? Was he Abraham Foster [Abt. 1622-Abt 1711], son of Reginald Foster [1636-1707]?

Savage’s “Genealogical Dictionary of New England” identifies the widow of Abraham Foster, son of Reginald Foster, as the woman who was “…sentenc. to d. for witchcraft, but d. in prison." Another source, however, gives a different name for Abraham's wife -Lydia Burbank. Was Ann his second wife??? Are these two entirely different Foster families?

Many thanks if you can help me untangle this information-

Jean

I am a direct descendant from Susannah (NORTH) MARTIN, who was one of the "Witches" executed in the Salem Witch Trials, and I would like to find out more about her. She was the widow of George Martin, of Salisbury, and was convicted in a trial in the Court of Oyer and Terminer on June 29, 1692, and was the "Only woman ever hung on the north side of the Merrimack River" on July 19, 1692. She left behind two daughters, Esther and Abigail, and five sons, including John, through whom I am a descendant. Also included in Susannah's descendants is John Greenleaf Whittier, the famous poet.
If anyone can help me to identify her other sons and / or her parents, or any other pertinent information, I would be very greatful.

While researching my MARTIN branch, I came across a site that listed George and Susannah North MARTIN with my relatives Lewis MARTIN b. 1793 NC, Anderson MARTIN b.1827 Knox Co., TN, and Luther MARTIN b. 11 May 1856 KY d.13 Jun 1944. There appeared to be a connection but I was not able to figure it out. Does anyone know if there is a connection between my 3 people and George MARTIN?

Thanks for any help.

My 9th g-grandmother was Sarah Alcock. I came across some information that her second husband was Henry Herrick. I have not been able to confirm this. She was born abt. 1642 and died December 29th, 1711. Her first husband was John Giddings died March 1690/91. I I have seen the Herrick name associated with the trials is several places and was trying to confirm the second marriage of Sarah. Is anyone researching the Herrick family or can anyone confirm this for me. I was also wondering about the Alcock and Giddings families. They both seem to be in the area at that time and I don't really know where to look for the best or most reliable information on the individuals involved in the trials. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm curious if he is related to the Putnams of the Salem Witch trials. He married Elleanah Abbott, a descendant of John Alden. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello

For those interested Charmed character Melinda Warren was based on Mary Warren of the Salem Witch Trials.

According to the tv show Melinda Warren "Mary", was from rural Virginia and migrated to Salem. I have no idea if this is based on historical fact regurding the life of Mary Warren, or is simply a work of fiction. I immagine that the later is true.

I am interested because of a family legand of witchraft dating back to the 1800's in rural Virginia.

Does anyone here know the history of Mary Warren prior to the witch trials? Was she , or any of her family from Virginia?

How about after the trials?

I am seeking additional information on the participation in the Salem Witch Trails by Hoag family members. I am a descendant of Joseph Haog and Sarah Goodwin. Is Sarah Goodwin one of the “Goodwin” children referenced in the book Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions written by Cotton Mather in 1689? A transcription appears at the following location http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/ASA_M...
It references the father as John Goodwin but I show that these two girls are the daughters of Richard Goodwin & Mary Fowler

Leslie Hope posted the following message in August of 1999. Does anyone have her current contact information?:

I'm thinking of the Goodwin girls Martha and Sarah who were very young children when they were used as evidence of possession by the accused "witches." Martha in particular had to go live with Cotton Mather for a time so he could study her case and I presume exorcise the witchcraft that she was supposedly afflicted by. But I surmise that they grew up to repudiate their innocent involvement because they both married the Hoag boys, Joseph and Jonathan, who like their father John Hoag (according to the Journal of Joseph Hoag John supposedly was an assize court judge at the time of the witch persecutions who lost his position because he opposed the persecution) and their grandfather John Emery (though he was a very well to do maker of fine furniture and a founding father of Newbury MA he was hauled into court on charges of giving hospitality in his home to Quakers though he was not one himself) were thorns in the side of the Puritan establishment.

Here is a quote from the Journal of Tristram Coffin about
the Hoag boys: In 1704,Judge Sewall thus writes. 'I told Mr. [Nicholas] Noyes of Salem of ye quaker meeting at Samuel Sayers and of ye profaneness of ye young Hoags professing that heresy.' These 'young Hoags,' were all sons of John Hoag, and resided in the west parish of Newbury."

Regarding the contested will of Ursual North, step-mother of Susannah (North) Martin, does anyone know who William Buckly of Ipswich is? He is mentioned in Ursual's will in 1670. Sarah (Smith) Buckley married to a William Buckley in Salem was also charged with wtichcraft in 1692 . Is Sarah (Smith) Buckley's husband the same William Buckly mentioned in Ursula North's will?

Does anyone know Ursula North's maiden or married (if widowed) name prior to marrying Richard North?

I am of his lineage through my greatgrandmother (Weathermon) He opposed the witch trials.
"In evaluating those Puritan ministers involved in the Salem witch trials, we would certainly have to regard the Rev. Samuel Willard of Boston as one of the virtuous clergymen, as he was opposed to the trials and tried to influence public opinion against them in 1692. Undoubtedly, great things had long been expected of Willard, as his family lineage bespeaks that of a man destined to make an impact upon the community."

Mine lived in a distance from Salem and I am not 100% it is the same family. Mine was related to James Redfyn. Anything would be interesting. Iam also kinda of the impression I might also be related to Abigail Williams . Just a hunch . I have not proven a connection that far back in my Williams family yet. My father says we are related to Roger Williams I do not know if there was any relation to Abigail through him or not?
Linda

I have seen conflicting statements about whether or not Mary was Martha -- or if Martha was the daughter of Mary for example! Anyone researching these people?

As you can see from the year of death, my ancestor Francis Collins died before the Salem witchcraft hysteria of 1692. However, many people in Salem have told me that the Collins family was involved with the trials. Does anyone have any information on how the Collins family was involved, and why is Collins Cove in Salem considered so important to todays "Salem witches?" What has Collins Cove to do with Francis Collins, did he live there? I know he owned a "house of entertainment" in Salem, according to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary. I descend from his daughter Christian Collins who married Robert Bray in 1685.

Does anyone know the ancestry of Francis Collins of Salem, or his wife Hannah Cockerill?

Mary Warren, Proctor family servant

Hi, I have been researching the Salem Trials off and on for many years(mostly off) I have been interested in the real John Proctor and family since reading The Crucible way back in the 7th grade. I've learned quite a bit about the family, but am still trying to trace Mary Warren after 1692. Mary, Abigail Williams and another of the "afflicted" girls so active in the trials are three that disappeared from history after the trials ended. In his forward to The Crucible, Arthur Miller stated that there was a local legend that Abigail Williams ended up as a Boston prostitute which I've not heard of anywhere else. Since the real Abigail was 11 or 12 during the trials, I've always thought this "legend" might pertain to Mary Warren. Are their any family legends/tales regarding the real Mary Warren? I'm very interested as verbal history handed down often contains a good deal of truth. Elizabeth Basset Proctor, John's third wife, also pleaded with the courts several years after 1692 when she planned to remarry. She stated that she could not get any of her dowery back from the Proctor children ; the children claiming "she was dead in the law" as her conviction and death sentence for witchcraft had never been overturned.

This seems very contrary to John's eldest son, Benjarmin, who claimed in the 1711/1712 petition for compensation to victims of witchcraft persecution, that he had "raised his father's children from all his wives(total of 3)one after the other"
I have always thought that the real truth behind Elizabeth Basset Proctor's claim was that John Proctor's estate may have been tied up in the courts and his children simply didn't have the money/property to give to Elizabeth. Anyone know of any family stories behind Elizabeth's claims?

Thanks so much

I'm writing a paper on the Salem Witch Trials and Caporael's theory about being caused by Ergot poisoning and I was wondering if Sarah Osburn was a midwife or ever a midwife to Ann Putnam, Sr.. In "The Crucible" Mrs. Putnam accuses Goody Osburn of being her midwife and losing 3 children subsquentially but I cannot find any documentation of this in the court records. If you know if it is true or false or can tell me where I can find documentation to back this up I would be very grateful.
Thank You, Meredith Goodrich

Not the hokus-pokus the world Thinks it is?!
The more people talk about this Nature based and peaceful religion the more folks can come out of the broom closet.
Although supposedly none of those hanged in Salem in 1692 were Witches, there are transcripts that give hints that some might actually have been *dabbling* at it.
Tituba for one.
Come out come out where ever you are...

Does anyone know the maiden name of widow Lydia Dustin, who died in prison after being acquitted of witchcraft because she couldn't pay the jail fees? She was arrested with her daughters Mary Colston and Sarah (spinster), and her grand daughter Elizabeth Colston. Elizabeth escaped twice, which was unusual. They were all from reading. I am interested in reconstructing their family tree, because I am descended from the Elizabeth who escaped prison.

Looking for records

I am looking for records for the salem witch trials. I would need a complete transcript of each witch trial,& a complete list of all people tried for witchcraft in salem. If anyone can help me with my research, please, post a reply. Thank you. I would also like cemetery, burial & estate information for as many of these people as can be located.
