Maximum number of people in FTM 16

I now have over 2000 people in my family tree, which gave me pause to wonder if there is a maximum number of people you can save in FTM 16?

Providing your records were not lost on Noah's flood, when you get to the lady who ate the fruit you have gone back far enough.

Seriously it depends a little on how many images you embed and if you pre-edit them first

But on an average computer about 250,000 plus

The following table explains the most common limitations about which users have questions.

Number of individuals per file approximately 250,000 *
Number marriages per individual 99
Number of children per marriage 99
Number of objects per Scrapbook 2,000 †
Number of Family Books per file 31
Number of Book Items (Saved Views) per file 512
Size of each note section
FTM 2005: about 8 pages
FTM 2006-16: about 250 pages
Number of items per box on a tree 50
Number of generations allowed in an Outline Descendant Tree 250
Number of generations allowed in graphical trees
(Ancestor, Descendant, Hourglass and All-In-One) 99
Number of generations allowed in genealogy reports 99
Number of generations Pedigree View can display 7

* Number of individuals per file is an approximation; the actual number varies. File capacity is determined by several factors, including data entry method, amount and type of information entered for each individual, etc.
† Number of objects per scrapbook is the programmed limit. For optimal performance, we recommend careful selection of scrapbook items to limit file size.

This is really useful information...thanks. I was wondering how many people I could add to my tree...am at about 30,000 people in FTM 2005.
While I don't have a lot of images I did note that when I started adding more census 'snips' I began having some crashes. My photos are really too small to print...maybe up to 50k...I don't remember off hand.

I haven't had any major crashes for some time now (knocking on wood) so I guess whatever was lost (if anything) everything is OK now so long as I don't add to the problem.

A few of my notes are large for a very few people but most don't even have a page, if any, & most only a few lines but I think my total file size is pretty large...would have to take a look to see what it is now but I'm low on pc memory at the moment.

I have thought of upgrading to V16 for some time now but unless there is something in that version I could benefit from (new the ver16) I see no reason to do so. (If it works, don't fix it has always been my motto)

What does V16 have that 2005 doesn't?

Thanks, Priscilla

Priscilla

Have you installed the critical SP 1 patch for FTM 2005?

Go to http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/... and in the search box search for 2537

Note this patch is separate to another FTM 2005/06/16 patch that is required if you are running Vista

Re your question about enhancements from FTM 2005 to FTM 16

Version 16 enhancements

An "Individuals to Include" capability to the source usage report
A "Type Ahead" search (similar to the Index search) in the find Master sources list
A new Edit button in the Master Source area that takes you from the Citation area, directly into the Master Source

Introduced in Version 2006

* Family Facts — online feature that helps you learn more about the meaning and origin of a family name, take a look at migration and immigration patterns, and gain insight into a variety of other interesting facts about a particular family name.
* Research Tips — learn even more about your ancestors by having Family Tree Maker point you to a variety of sources and information you might not have known was available.
* Contact Other Researchers — get in touch with distant cousins and others who have already done considerable research on your ancestors and compare notes. You may be able to go back several generations based on research that's already done.
* Data Entry Enhancements — a more logical, intuitive layout for the Edit Individual dialog box. A new Facts tab lets you add and edit a broad range of items.
* Expanded Notes — to make room for the family stories that you want to share and preserve, the capacity of the Notes feature has been increased by a factor of thirty. Notes can now contain the equivalent of approximately 250 typewritten pages of text.
* Printing Notes — print directly from the Notes window using the new Print button.
* Backup Enhancements — make and restore backups of your valuable data from a wide variety of storage devices using the redesigned Backups dialog box. The new Internet backup feature offers even greater protection by letting you make backups to a remote server.
* Source Enhancements — save time by entering Master Source information only once, then creating a new citation each time you refer to a different area or page in that source.

The big improvement for you is Notes from 32 Kb (about 8 pages) to 1 MB (about 250 pages) per person or marriage note

I've no idea if I ever downloaded any service pack for FTM.
I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago....I have permanent short term memory loss. Is there a way I can tell if I did?
Thanks, Priscilla

You obviously have not looked at the link I provided

If you had done so you would see the following:

To see whether SP-1 is already installed, go to the Help menu in Family Tree Maker 2005 and select System Information. In the Program Version line, if you have SP-1, your Family Tree Maker version will read Family Tree Maker 2005 12.0.345 SP-1.

FTM 2006 & FTM 2009 - why are there limits in the file size? When I hit a limit I cannot even go back and delete any images (tells me to load a backup). Since I cannot even do a backup or compress when the mystical limit is reached I cannot even try to fix the file and delete images. I can not restore to a recent backup because I am not allowed to create one anyway.

I think my limit is the actual file size and doesn't even allow you to do a compress or backup. That should be allowed via the s/w even if you have hit some limit.

I very much doubt if you have hit the program's limits.

How many people in your file?

How many images?

I suspect that you have other computer problems outside of FTM

Lynda,

If you are having a problem, please provide us with some details.

You mention Version 2006 and 2009. Are you using both versions?

What is the File Size in both versions and the number of Individuals in both files?

Do you have any Images in your file?

From what you posted, it sounds like something else might be going on.

As John said, I am not sure you have reached the limits of the Program.

Thank you,

Russ
