FTM 16 Append/Merge duplicates all individuals in destination file

Hi,

Not sure anyone can help with this, maybe I just want to vent. I am trying to import a FTW file from my cousin into mine. There are some duplicate individuals showing up that are not true duplicates (the same individual is showing as in file 1 and not file 2, and vice versa) when in fact they are the same person, often with identical spellings and birth dates. So, I have been starting the merge, but after the 'import' and it says that I am about to import X people, I take the 'print a detailed report' option in lieu of actually completing the merge. I print the report and investigate, change some data in my file if required to help the match, and repeat occasionally.

Every few times, it completes the import and just hangs. I stop FTM in task manager (only thing I can do short of reboot), and when I go back in it has duplicated everyone in my file, and hasn't imported anyone from my cousin's file. I pull out the last backup, and start over! But it's getting tiresome.

Any suggestions?

Paul

Paul,

Are you sure that the "duplicate" is not being Imported? Did you check the FACTs in the two files for that individual. Is is possible that they were Merged?

From the File Menu, what option are you selected?

Hi Russ,

I am using the File-->Append/Merge command. I had already reverted to a backup when I saw your note, so I took special note of what happened the next time I attempted the merge, and you were right. The duplicates were in fact from both files. Essentially, the system appended all records from the incoming file, and performed no merging. I used to get a message asking whether I wanted to just append, or append and merge. Now it justs goes ahead and appends, and then the program stops responding. BUT, it appears to complete the appending as my new file has exactly the the total of my file and my incoming file (1002 +1203 = 2205).

So, although the operation appears to complete, I am baffled by why it `hangs`. I have since tried to merge the duplicates, it appears to work but I`ll post separately on some issues that I`m having there.

I still may go back to my pre-merge backup and start over.

Paul,

Yes, the Append with do that. Once you have Appended, then you can do a People, Merge Duplicate Individuals.

You might want to Back that "Appended" file before you do that.
