FTM version 16 and previous will not work on windows 7

I called Ancestry and I was told that FTM version 16 and previous versions will not work on windows 7. I am making a note of this on the forum because someone had previously told me that I could stay with version 16, if I updated to windows 7.

I was hoping to buy a lap top with windows 7. I ordered FTM 2010, but from what I hear it has some problems. I am happy with version 16, but what if I want to upgrade my computer or it crashes and forces me to buy a new one.

Kyla,

I think that what you may have been told, is that the previous versions may not be supported by Windows 7. NOT that they will not work in Windows 7.

I suspect that previous versions WILL work in Windows 7. Support and work are two different statements. What that means is that the Earlier Versions were not tested with Windows 7, when the Version of Family Tree Maker was released and put through the texting process when the version was released to us.

Thanks Russ, I'm quite sure the person that I spoke with said that previous versions (up to and including 16) would not work on windows 7 because of the speed and something concerning the number of bits.

Kyla,

There isn't much difference, from what I understand, between Vista and Windows 7.

We won't know until October 22, but I am pretty sure that Version 16 and earlier will run under Windows 7. I'll know when I have it installed.

Have you found out yet about compatability? I am desperately disappointed that I can no longer use my Version 16, so desperate that I think I will have to buy a second computer to keep it running

I feel the same way you do about version 16. I did find out that some versions of winsows 7 have an xp mode. That may help us. I think we might have to get window 7 professional edition in order to get the xp mode. I have also considered buying a second computer while I can still find one with windows xp or vista.

John,

I haven't heard of anyone (yet) who has had a problem with Version 16 on Windows7.

Why are you not able to run Version 16? Are you running as Administrator and have you checked the Compatibility settings?

I haven't received my Windows7 CD yet, so I can't test Version 16. I am sure I would have seen someone with a problem by now.

I spoke with you as you sounded perhaps techy and that you were contemplating having 7 installed soon. There is a growing list of queries about this subject, even on this message board. It is something to do with whether its the 32 or the 64 bit version. I am just waiting for someone to tell me in words of few syllables, how I can crack it.

John,

I WILL install Windows 7 when it arrives. I have seen where folks with Windows 7 ARE using Family Tree Maker 2010 and I saw two different Family Tree Maker users say that they were running Family Tree Maker Version 16.

Both 32 and 64 bit PCs have been involved.

It may just be a matter of settings on your Computer. I saw where the Microsoft website has some information on the settings.

Are YOU haven't a problem with Version 16 on Windows 7? If so, what are they.

From what I have seen, with Version 16, the same issue with the PDF Generator in Vista applies in Windows 7. That is the use of the Vista Patch and Running As Administrator.

Hope that helps,

Russ

Have you installed the patch to make FTM16 work with Windows 7? If you have Windows 7 32bit and want FTM16 to work on it then go here >>> http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduse...

Of course though if its 64bit then I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work.
