I am having a problem with my Family Tree Maker 2009 crashing just about every time I try to merege information from ancestry.com. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

FTM shows me possible record matches. When I try to merge something, such as census records, WWI enlistment papers, etc., it goes through almost to the end of the merge process and then just freezes. I hit control, alt, delete, and am told "program not responding". I shut it down and then reopen, and the information I merged is there, but not the media, such as a copy of the actual census record. Very frustrating to have it freezed almost every time I try to merge information into the program.

Did this start AFTER you updated to 18.0.0.307?

If so, please give this a try:

1 Start a Web Search

2 Select the Online record you want to merge into your file

3 BEFORE you continue, in the Lower Left Panel, where the FACTs are displayed, do not click "Merge" but click the MEDIA tab

4 Wait for any media to load into that Left Window

5 Then Click "Merge"

See if that resolves this for you.

I am not the original sender of the message re: FTM 2009 freezing when trying to merge documents. But, I had the same problem and found this solution and, so far, it works. Do you know why? Am I going to have to remember to do this all the time? I have the latest FTM updates but the problem only started recently - the only difference I can think of is that I just recently updated Vista to SP 2. Thank you so much for that solution.

It happens on Windows XP so I would say the problem lies with FTM 2009 or Ancestry or the interaction between the wo. I can't remember if the problem started with the last update to FTM 2009 or already existed but it is a thundering nuisance.

I am a UK user and I find that everything works just fine with the UK census images. It is other images such as BMD that cause things to go wrong. Even then the first of those images that you merge in a session still works fine, it is just later ones that go wrong.

Isn't this the know flaw in 2009 on merging images? Sounds like exactly what always happened to me. It was fixed in 2010 with the premerge technique they changed to.

Are you saying that you are having the problem with 2010?

It appeared to have been a timing issue in one of the patches in 2009. AND it didn't always happen to everyone. I haven't experienced the problem, only figured out a way around it for a couple of users.

It happens to me also. Sometimes I have to close down and start back up several times during an ancestry.com session. Whatever the problem is, are you certain it has been fixed in 2010?
