I'm not sure if this applies to you but I had a similar problem earlier and thought it would be worth replying. I could load records but got the "unable to clip" error when I tried to merge them and it seemed to be connected to a slow internet connection. It seems that if FTM can't download an image within a given amount of time then this error occurs.

Although I could load web pages, I noticed they were loading a bit slower than normal. When I checked my signal strength I noticed it was pretty weak. I repositioned my wi-fi aerial, got my signal strength back up, and hey presto - media items once again loaded and merged without a problem.
