I will try and put some screen shots up later for the Share menu issue.

Getting back to the file overwrite issue.

If I have a file called Example.jpg in the media folder. Then by try and load another file also called Example.jpg. 2010 gives me no warning a file of this name exists. It just overwrites.

I've double checked with my 2009 version and that gives you a warning.

This happened to us when we accidently used the same name for a file we already had in the media folder. Once you have around 1000 images in your media folder, sooner or later a duplicate file name will occur, but I would hope the program would warn you ( as 2009 did ).

I am not sure what you have already entered.

You would enter one set of parents for your mother and establish the correct relationship, natural or adopted. Go back to your mother and use the Other Parents option to enter the other set of parents with the proper relationship. You can then continue building on both sets of parents.

Curt Miller
karborwski,

Yes, you should be able to.

When you create a report or tree, there is an Items to Include menu, in the RH side of that screen, and the left end of that part of the screen.

You will see "Preferred Only".
Russ

Yes. I corrected my online Family Tree (but having to use FTM 2010 Data Error Report to point to errors re marriage dates - because the download Import.log makes no sense).

Those corrections reduced my download error count from 33 to 24.

I have not at any time in FTM 2010, seen a Task List or To Do list on the Plan Workspace.

Yes - my FTM 2010 is version 19.0.0.206.

If I download a Gedcom file rather than using the "Download a Tree From Ancestry" - it makes no difference. I still get these errors. And neither method gives me the Task List that you were able to generate.

Line 471: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.

Lindsay
Russ

I downloaded my Online Tree into FTM 2010 - and used the data error reports in FTM 2010 to correct marriage dates in my Online Tree. Hoping to eliminate download errors as the Import.log is of no help at all.
I then deleted my FTM 2010 tree - and downloaded the Online Tree once again - but ended up with the same number of MARR errors. FTM 2010 Data Error report now has no errors.
The Import.log is useless to help you to identify what records need attention.
When the Online Tree is downloaded - you end up with "IMPORT COMPLETE" on the download summary - with the options "VIEW LOG FILE" or "CLOSE".
If you click on VIEW LOG FILE - you see the Import.log in Notepad.
If you click on CLOSE - you are shown FAMILY WORKSPACE at HOME PERSON.
If I go back to PLAN WORKSPACE and expect to see a TO DO LIST as per your example - I dont.
At no time in FTM 2010 have I ever seen a TO DO LIST on PLAN WORKSPACE after an Online Tree download.

Your blog example though is confusing as you give an example of a TO DO LIST - but then say that "With Version 2010, this information is not placed on the To Do / Task list." Well I go along with that - it ISNT. So why show an example ?

Am I missing something here ?

Lindsay

karbowski,

Birth name is the name that should be entered. You can then add the Adoptive Name, under the Name FACT. Make sure that you put Source-Citation on both.

Remember that you can enter the names as you know them. For example, if you knew the Adoptive Surname first, then it, then as you leaned of the birth surname, enter that.

The real issue might be, which should be the preferred Name to appear in reports and charts. That would be your decision.

Not sure what you mean by What tree should dominate? If you mean Birth Parents or Adoptive Family Parents, again, that would be your choice or the effected family involved.

Lets look at is from another point of view,

W?HAT do YOU want to see? You are impacted by this. If you want to see your Blood Line tree, you would make the Natural Parents (birth surname) as Preferred. I am sure that both "lines" are important to you, so you might NOT want to use the Preferred Only option for trees and reports. You might want to check them out. But, you do have some flexibility.

Russ

I'm using FTM2010 and if there is some sort of warning check, I'd love to know how.

I don't expect the personal tree to communicate with 2010, my point is that the warning given in the online tree is effective and, as far as I can see, there is no similar mechanism in 2010.

No point in trying to give you an example, since I don't know when these duplications occur. I suspect it happens when I stumble upon a source record that I had forgotten that had been seen before and merged.

My mother was adopted by my wonderful grandparents when she was 9 years old. She knew her birth name.
guybc,

Actually, they do in Version FTM2010.

Not sure what you are taking about on the My Member Tree issue. That tree would NOT know that you had merged information into your Version 2010 tree.

HOW are you entering these "duplicate" pieces of information? It might be helpful if you provide an example of one of the 'duplicated pieces of information". Remember that the entire FACT information, Date, Place, Description must be exact.

Russ

Following a year of research, I find that there are many duplicated pieces of information, such as dates of birth and residence in the Edit window. The Hints logo still appears on all those individuals that I have by accident merged more than once.
Our tree on Ancestry has a warning at the top of the screen to tell me that historical information has already been entered whenever I might be tempted to add it for a second time.
How nice it would be if those helpful Hints would disappear when the information has already been entered in Family Tree Maker.

need help creating a GEDCOM for MAC with PAF 2.3.1 from FTM

I'm running the current version of FTM on Windows and am trying to creat a GEDCOM for someone who has a Mac and version 2.3.1 of PAF. I've tried at least 8 different variations of options and so far he has been unable to open any of the GEDCOMs I've created (although I've tested myself, and I can open them, and so could another FTM Windows user who I sent the first GEDCOM to).

My 3 option choices are:
1) FTM, FTW, Temple Ready or PAF
(There's a note by the PAF choice that indicates it's only for PAF 3.0 or higher)

2. GEDCOM Version 5.5 or 4

3. ANSI, ANSEL, IBMPC or MACINTOSH character set

The documentation said to use FTM if you don't know what to use. I've tried setting that option to FTM and to PAF. I've tried both 4 and 5.5 versions of GEDCOM. I've tried ANSI and I've tried MACINTOSH character sets. (Systematically keeping track so I tried all the possible variations of those choices.) So far my MAC researcher has been unable to open any of my GEDCOMs.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what options I need to be using? Is his PAF software just too old to read any GEDCOM I create?

Any help greatly appreciated!
Yes Russ

I am putting it down to issues relating to my online data.

So the message for anyone else downloading their data from Ancestry into FTM 2010 and getting LOG ERRORS re MARR (marriage) dates - is not to assume that there is some problem with the Gedcom file or FTM 2010 - but rather firstly allow FTM 2010 to point out the errors via its data error reports and either 1) correct the issues in FTM or 2) go back to your online data at Ancestry and make corrections there - and then re-download your data.

Thanks again . . .
Now I can't even find my old file. When I look under File; Open, I don't see a file from the date I last saw the correct version in. All the files I've opened from 2009 either say there are errors in them or have the same problems with the media attaching to incorrect people. Also, I had several duplicate sources which I spent many days deleting from my tree, and once again they are back. I have to literally go to each individual in the program, and remove the duplicate information once again.

Rather than try something that may make the problem worse, I think I will just fix all the problems manually once again. Thank you for your time in trying to help. I have no idea how this problem occurred in the first place and was hoping someone else had seen something similar.

I would like to know if there is an easier way to remove duplicate sources from my tree though. If you have any thoughts on that, I would appreciate your input.

Russ

Sorry - but I dont understand the two points you are checking on.

BUT:

By using the FTM 2010 error report and marriage report - I have gone back to my Ancestry tree to realise that each of those errors had a data issue in the online copy. For example - records that had husband / wife - and marriage date - yet when I checked RELATED EVENT - I found that the spouse connection was "unknown". Deleting the marriage and re-entering it - corrected those. So by deleting my tree in FTM 2010 - and downloading again - I can get to a point where I am not seeing any errors on the FTM error reports.
But the download IMPORT.LOG continues to show errors as before.

Line 14076: error 1 : Invalid level number.
Another thought --
do you have problems downloading other files?
If you aren't sure, try timing viewing a large picture. You can find one easily by searching on "large pictures" -- or you can download a picture at this website: http://www.freefoto.com/images/01/07/01_07_1---Pair-of-Dogs_....

Copy this URL and paste it into web browser. It should only take a few seconds to view. If it takes more than a minute, then your DSL connection is probably slow, and that is your problem.

Jim Vincent

Jan,

Yes, there is a performance difference between Version 2008 and the previous versions of the program. But, since 2008 came out, the developers have been working on, and have been, improving the performance.

Watching the use of RAM is probably not an indication of anything unusual.

What is your Default Browser? and what version (help, about)?

Russ

ecila,

Are you saying that you have Two computers with the Family Tree Maker program? That's OK, but trying to understand what is going on.

You HAD the program installed on the 'other' computer. What Version of Family Tree Maker is on that PC? Did you Register Family Tree Maker from the PC?

Now, you installed Family Tree Maker on this 'second' and tried to Register it from this PC.

What was the Error Message you received?

You do need to register the program and from what I have seen, when an Update is done to the program, you may need to re-register.

You need to be careful in that you do NOT create multiple online accounts at Ancestry.com.

Russ

Jim,

I use the Book feature and a bibliography in the book so that all of the Endnotes are not printed. If someone asks for the Endnotes I will print a specific report.

As you what you would like to see I would suggest that you use this link:

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feed...

And provide some detailed feedback to Family Tree Maker 2010.

You will probably not receive feedback from them, but the developers do read the feedback.

Good luck,

Russ
